I am looking at getting a proper DCC controller , I have been using DCC++ on an Arduino. Would you still recommend the DR5000 model, or is there a newer model available now? What about accessories for the DR5000 system, what would you recommend for point switching, reverse loop and signals?
With the Buck Converter, does it cause any additional heat or distortion of the DCC Signals?

I predominately use my Roco Z21 and DR5000 is my secondary one that I have been doing testing with. For the money DR5000 best going around. For occupancy and stationary decoders I would use Digikeijs too for their money. I am using lots of them with the Z21, both Loconet and S88N. They have a myriad of types for all different applications. I did not see any heat issues with the buck. I did do another video using an oscilloscope to test the signal it was pretty good, however I really did not put if through its paces on a bus cable on a long run or with power hungry sound decoders. Its worth a try though. Hope this helps a bit?

@@ModelRailroadTechniques I was just watching another channel, rudyshobbychannel, and he had a video from a few years ago with the DR5000 and in his country it came with a multi-voltage power supply and he indicated that the actual track voltage is 1.5V below the input power supply voltage.
Not sure if that helps for anyone wanting to check things.

@@EsotericArctos I am not sure they are sold with the adjustable power supply anymore. The Roco is similar with a volt or so difference

I would spend a few quid on an oscilloscope (~$50) to check the effect of these different power sources you are trying. The DR5000 needs a very clean power supply to provide a decent DCC signal. The multi-voltage SMPS that used to be supplied caused a poor DCC waveform, and changing to a better SMPS produced a much cleaner waveform with more stable control. You may be creating a similar problem with your choice of supply.

Great advice. I will look into this. Any brands??

@@ModelRailroadTechniques I agree with Iain it’s very important to not change the wave form. As Iain says the power supply was change to give you better Pro-Formance and better DCC signal. I my self would not change the Voltage just run with the power supply’s in the box. Digikeijs also do a DR5000 with a 15V power supply if you want a lower Voltage to suite your needs.

DCCtrainautomation cheers. This is the biggest down fall of the Z21 over the DR5000. The Dr5000 is being used for some experimenting and my primary layout command is still the Z21.

@@ModelRailroadTechniques you just change the output voltage on the Z21 to whatever you want, as long as it is less than the input voltage from the SMPS. You do not need to ever change the SMPS with a Z21.
That is a significant benefit of the Z21 over the DR5000, not a downfall

Iain Morrison sorry I was asking any suggestions on oscilloscopes. I’m well versed in the Z21 as this is my primary command station.

It doesn't work on Apple Mac.

Sorry can not comment further on any work arounds for this. Unfortunate DR5000 is a great price of kit
