This is wonderful. Bill and Robert Fripp should start a music college called King Crimson University. Or. "Bill & Bob's Better Music school" lol! On a more serious note... 24:31 this video expresses perfectly why Nick Mason is TREMENDOUS and LEGENDARY!
l LOVE YOU BILL! But calling you ''doctor'' is going to take some getting used to! To me ....you're just _BRUF!_ Thee best drummer in my world! xD Well you and Chad Wakerman anyway!
I'm afraid if we injected all these questions asked and conditions imposed at the moment of creativity there would never be anything created. I don't think you can nail down creativity to a system of thoughts and events, it simply occurs...it's as close to magic as one can get. I had a person tell me once that music was simply mathematics by virtue of it being possible to write it down as a metric graph....But dots on parallel lines don't make music. They just record the basic notes and beats that are used to make it.
I believe he’d reach a bigger audience if he would just bash away at the skins with a great band. You’re a phenomenal talent Bill, but this lecture takes all the fun of what you create. I’m wondering if they even are aware of his incredible body of work?
Wow! Had NO idea Dr. "Bruf" could be SO Fucking Pompous! Can you just Imagine the Pissing Contests between him, and Fripp! JEEZUS! Bruford was an Exceptional Drummer within Rock Music. He added NOTHING to Jazz, and Fusion drumming, whatsoever! Yes carried-on fine, without him. They did not, however without Chris Squire - a Humble, non-pompous Musical Innovator who transformed the Electric Bass in ways no other bassist has, with the exception of Jaco Pastorius. Bruford cannot stand next to Max Roach, Tony Williams, Ed Blackwell, Roy Haynes, Jack Dejohnette, Lenny White, Marvin Smitty Smith, JT Lewis, - and not even Jon Christensen, or his compatriot - Phil Collins, who if you really listen to his work on "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and Brand X - played with much greater Inventiveness & Suppleness!
OK...to be fair - as Pompous, and Boring Bruford could be giving his "Lecture"...he was much more attentive, and open in the Q & A than I would have expected! He was actually quite "Generous"! - still doesn't alter my opinion of him as a "Jazz" Drummer. As a Professor - if he can tighten-up the material a bit, and not try to tie-in so many Modalities, I know he would keep my Interest. His respect for max Roach is completely Warranted!
ABWH with Tony Levin was ridonculously good live - actually better than Alan White and Chris. There was never really a Yes w/o Chris Squire b/c he basically controlled the band. But the best combination in the rhythm section of Yes was absolutely BB and CS. It produced the most popular classic "hits" among fans. While there are some favorites post-CTTE, they aren't as strong as the period between 70-72. I think you are a bit over your skis on the Phil Collins comment. And if you somehow think BB is "pompous", perhaps you should listen to some of the critiques PC delivered of other drummers like Billy Cobham. Talk about arrogance...
@@markdarnell614 *nobody:* *mark darnell:* [Bruf] added NOTHING to Jazz, and Fusion drumming, whatsoever! Yes carried-on fine, without him. *me:* what do you think of mark darnell's creative output? *Bruf & the rest of the world:* who?
You just ain't listening properly. Anyway.... music is not a contest. It's always, "Who's the best?" It doesn't really matter. It's just what makes you,re feet tap.
Bill Bruford is one of the most intellectual, precise, punctual, yet expressive percussionists that I have ever heard. I miss that sound.
Creeping could be easygoing
Bill is the doctor ,Neil the professor
I found the question about "faking creativity" to be fascinating: isn't "faking" per se a kind of creative act?

I want to hear his snare drum CRACK again.
I love how he looks and sounds like an academic until Max Roach comes over the speakers and he starts twitching like the drummer that he is.
Mathew ~ xD Great comment Mathew!
Great lecture!!!
Genius drummer,smart man
So did you throw a cymbal at Chris Squire?
Brilliant 👍

I hope he's happy doing this, but something tells me he's just doing this like it's on his bucket list of things to do.
Class act
Dr Strange 💚
Bill's next job could be in academia...
