I'm one of those old school OGs (been flipping Bali song since around 1986). Trainers really sucked for many decades. Pretty much until Squid and BB Barfly got into it. Now that trainers are as good as they are, my skill in flipping has increased 10-fold. Prior to having a bushing, tight tolerance, trainer I plateaued at things like Bt8B, Hell Bent, Cherry Pickers, etc. I never wanted to do aerial tricks because I would get sliced up pretty often. Now that I have great quality trainers, I don't see a need to ever own a live blade except just to have it. They do look better IMO. The market is now seeing a lot more false-edge live blade or unsharpened options. I think this is where the industry should go. More false-edge live blades. Best of both worlds.

great topic, i flip trainers 90% of the time. I usually only flip a live blade if im camping (because i can also use it as a knife) or if i am working on my smoothness. i find it much easier to be smooth on a live blade because there is a actual risk if im not flipping smoothly.

Once I got my slift and maryn I rarely flip my Madko anymore. Live blades are just way more fun and it feels like I flip with a purpose. Aerials are so much more satisfying

Makes perfect sense! I can’t wait to get my first live blade 🙏

First Bali was a live blade back in 2015. Definitely a situation back then where if you wanted a good flipper it was going to have to be a live blade. There was the bench made 40T which you hardly see and the prodigy. Squid was just starting to poke his head in the game but was still a couple years away from being squid industries. And of course there were some other options but nothing like today.
Fortunately now for the people who don’t want live blades, a lot of makers are doing trailer versions of their products. Machinewise has a trainer variant for all its products and so does LDY I believe.

Yep we are truly in a trainer revolution! I honestly think that in the coming years the community might shift its focus to false live blades more than anything but only time will tell! 🙏

@@jakeflipsbalisongs I have to take mine to school to go to my dad‘s house and my mom’s and I was telling my friends about it and then he told on me so my nice teacher luckily had to chat with me and I showed her that it’s not a real blade because it’s a nabalis cheese

A balisong, by definition, is a type of knife. A trainer is not a knife, therefore by definitin not a balisong. Flip what you want, just don't call it a balisong. :) Honestly, I'd flip more trainers if it didn't cut into my balisong budget. They're great for training, but don't get the same satisfaction without that tiny little risk involved.

Well I can’t speak as to the satisfaction of live blades having never flipped a live one (that wasn’t a piece of junk). I would definitely call trainers balisongs. Sure you could be pedantic and say they are just “balisong trainers” but most people in the hobby today only care about balisong flipping and that can be achieved with a trainer or a live blade. I appreciate the comment though! 🙏
Edit: Also I have nothing else to call it as it definitely isn’t a butterfly knife (I avoid that term since TH-cam doesn’t like knives) and I think balisong trainer is too long to say especially since generally I say balisongs as in the entire hobby. Cheers
