And Ribbons ending in the 0-Gundam was basically just fanservice in the sense of "Amuro once again piloting the RX-78" being honest it was just a treat that moment.
Don't forget the Gundam build ova where they brought him back as Ribbons in Reborns Gundam and had him straight up face off against Char and his original VA in his iconic Red Zaku II. I love how these 2 have so many run ins with each other in their respective mechs be it Gundam shows, spin offs or even Gundam parodies (Gintama).
Not going to lie, Patrick "Immortal" Colasour was one of the highlights of the insignificant side plots meant to take us out of the depression that is the show's main plot. I was always rooting for him to get together with Kati. As dumb as he is, I always thought they made a good match. The sheer luck that man has was always amusing.
Honestly he is one of my favorite characters in anime. He get's his arrogance beaten out of him, yet demonstrates he does have skill to back up his boasting once he gets a GINX to close the tech gap. He finds someone he loves and does what it takes to persue her, growing into a better man in the process. (A better man, not a different man.) He is actually a good match up for her, helping her to loosen up and remain positive no matter how dark the situation gets. Plus the writers let the two of them actually get their happy ending, and that is just too damn rare not to appreciate. Patrick is there from the start of the first episode to the epilogue of the movie and it's a great set of bookends.

When I first watched Gundam 00, honestly, Season 2 felt like the "main season" so to say, with S1 feeling more like a prequel to S2 rather than S2 feeling like a sequel to S1.
The Exia R1 in the first episode of season 2 is still one of the most striking scenes in Gundam period, that scene is amazing, just the music, the GN particles, the quick slash before the turn around and Ribbons remarking, "Its Exia, Gundam Exia", is one of my favourite viewing experiences with my brother and cousin to date we were so hyped even though Exia got wrecked after
Exia Repair's entry was so badass, an older suit that was still deadly. And the way Lockon used trans-am for one second to destroy revive. Stuff like that made this particular Gundam memorable to me!
The scene of Setsuna's awakening as the very first true Innovator is one of the coolest scenes in 00, and honestly, you basically skipping over it so matter of factly did it dirty. The awakening of his true Innovator abilities being tied to as much of a mental as a physical change is beautifully done. His body is basically ready to go for a while, you can see the quantum brainwave effect in Setsuna's eyes in a lot of scenes before the awakening actually happens. The moment he, in his despair as the battle is being lost, realizes he can hear his friends and compatriots in a way that doesn't involve his ears, and thus opens the door to a much deeper comprehension, and yet comprehends that only a miracle can save them, is the moment that final link in his thought process is forged and he truly awakens as an Innovator. And the 00 Raiser recognizes that happening, and unleashes its ultimate ability: Trans-Am Burst. The miracle he needs happens. In that moment, the distinction between Gundam and Meister disappears, and together become the avatar of the future. In that moment, Setsuna becomes more than just the first Innovator. Honestly I think 00 actually handles the metaphysical stuff better than the UC does with Newtypes. Mainly because unlike Newtypes it actually does what story insists it does.
Unsure if I said this in the s1 retrospective but Gundam 00 is what got me into Gundam... I ADORE it... And I sincerely want more of it.... As an aside... I think the 00 dub might be one of Gundam's stronger dubs....
The A-Laws are a more realistic take on the Titans, because unlike the Titans, A-Laws have near-enough full control of the media, which means that barely anyone knows of their evil deeds, where the Titans seemed to commit their atrocities entirely out in the open and nobody other than their opponents seemed to particularly care. A-Laws are also a tad less moustache-twirling about the things they do and have at least a tangible justification for their draconic methods and a couple of somewhat sympathetic members, rather than consisting entirely of genocidal maniacs. The scene of Luise breaking down after killing Nena might be the hardest hitting scene in all of Gundam for me, that never fails to get to me. The way she is extatic and laughing and then calls out to her parents and it transitions into anguishied crying is just heartbreaking. Absolute props to the voice actress here (of the original Japanese anyway, I haven't hear the English dub and the German dub is ABYSMAL).
I always loved the innovator plot so much more than the "newtypes" plot for several reasons. First because what they can do and the purpose is solidly explained, and how they come about is exained enough. And second because its made cleare it's a guided evolution and that the proliferation of true gn drives in a post unity world will not only result in largely fixing the energy crisis of dont right but the use of them will help more innovators just OCCUR naturally.
Watching this (and your 1st season retrospect) before I play Super Robot Wars Z2.2 Saisei-hen to refresh me of Gundam 00 events. Yes, it's been years since I've watched the show.
If I'm not mistaken, OO is the only Gundam series that takes place in A.D. still and not in some far flung off distance future where somehow they changed Date measurements, not counting the Build Series'. In any case, it's one of the best Gundams out there.
Speaking of stargazer and the 00 movie I SUPER recommend checking out SD gundam G generation cross rays an insanly fun and fanservice filled SRW like that focuses on non-uc gundam continuities. Stargazer is there, as well as the actual best part of SEED, SEED astray. And a certain gundam from the movie is just one of the most insanely overpowered suits you can unlock in the game.
Yes there were moments of weirdness where Ali just let Setsuna and Marina go when he could have just kill them upon arriving middle east in a transport ship. Also, you should have mention that 00 has the best ending song of all Gundam, still.
My favourite Gundam series but agree with you about the 2nd mori, what they do with Marina and Wang Liu Mei a better backstory for her would be if she was kidnapped as a child and saw the horrors of humanity that's why she wants the world to change. Also agree it has some banger op and ed songs.
00 is a really great entry of Gundam, and I have never been able to decide if it is in spite of or because of its incredibly high density of non-sense. There are like half a dozen types of of super-humans in the story; some being related and others just being weird one-ofs. Like Half the plot revolves around Inovaders but there is a random cyborg that is revealed to be a cyborg seconds before he dies and nothing is made of that. But I respect the high level of "yeah that is what is happening" commitment and just rolling with the plot turns the series has, it was definitely not made by cowards and committed to the weird vision the creators had.
Season 2 was a wild ride and in a very, very good way. I love how more things had their revelations and settled, whether from the last season or in the same season. Also Marina Ismail's song can be a tearjerker. Children singing their hearts out while Setsuna fighting Ali without any instrument will forever be etched in my minds.
Bro that PS2 sound at the beginning just opened all my nostalgia ports. I'm leaking nostalgia man BRO AND you are using Metal Arms Glitch in the System main theme!!!! hell yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa im glad you liked 00. it is my fav series of all of gundam right next to gwitch and uc as a whole.
In my humble opinion this is honestly the best gundam series they have fledged out characters you grow to love over time, the gundams were cool, ribbons was an amazing villain, and its really similar to code geass (which is one of my fav animes)
Hearing about the Gundam 00 sequel back in what...2020? I was so happy, 00 was my first series back in 2015 after buying the 00 7sg HG Gunpla at a con and wanting to know the show it was from. Loved it, I've watched almost every Gundam show since then, and I'm STILL WAITING ON THAT SEQUEL HURRY UP (also, I heard you say "Bring Stabity" while writing this and it finally clicked that I think his name is supposed to mean Bring Stability xD)
@@ferhog7705 I'm sure I remember seeing a reference sheet art of Graham Aker after surviving the events of the movie, so I'd be surprised if they put effort into that to not make it at all
A point about the music - its made by Kenji Kawai, who does a TON of movies, anime, and games. If you watch the IP Man movie series, you'll hear very similar songs/arrangements. Its kind of awesome actually.
Love the review man!! 00 is my all time favorite, one battle scene that has always been my favorite was Lyle’s last fight with the innovator! Pushing his battle dmg gundam to the limit for a last “second” Hail Mary transam juke was pure adrenaline fueled badassry!!
By splitting Gundam 00 and Code Geas into two seasons each Sunrise made some mistakes and learned some valuable lessons. Lessons which have been heeded and well used in IBO and Witch From Mercury, lessons which should have been heeded but weren't during development of AGE and Reconguista. AGE particularly with it's multi-act structure could have benefited immensely from being split into three or four seasons. I personally never finished AGE because the third protagonist really didn't grab me like the Asemu had. Marina has a similar bit to Relena but without the benefit of nostalgia so her character arc doesn't hit for me. I honestly prefer Relena, Lacus, & Kudelia.
If I'm not mistaken, Gundam 00 and Code Geass were created around the same time by Studio Sunrise. When a season of one show ended the season of the other show would begin, and the former would go into production while the latter show was running.
00 feels like the writers of the show took a look at gundam wing and decided to improve upon it and fix the things that weren't given much thought even if they change the plot a bit.
I think the main issue with the second season for me is they had set up so many plot threads and character arcs to tie up that some of them didn't land with the impact they possibly could have. Other than that, I largely enjoyed season 2 though, especially as a fellow Zeta enjoyer. I think 00 was ulimately successful in keeping the spirit of Gundam while still being a pretty distinct entity in its own right in both narrative and mecha aesthetics. Coming directly from the heavy fanservice-oriented Cosmic Era was something of a relief. Other than that, really looking forward to your mecha retrospective. It's a subgenre I love, but I don't have much exposure to anything pre-80's outside of MSG.
30:26 You neglected to mention that the reason this was so funny was because it was after we were shown the other pilots saying the names of their loved ones.
00 Season 2 is a different beast from the first season...and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It falls into more typical Gundam territory, which I personally am not usually a fan of, but it's no more egregious than other UC entries that employ the same things, and honestly I'd rather watch 00 again than most UC series anyways. Having evil Amuro and the final fight be somewhat reminiscent of the original in that they fight in their original Gundams was a nice homage to. (Other than Trans-Am just being one large Char reference among other things) 00 manages to eke out as one of the highs on the list of AC Gundam series, and serves as a better Wing in a lot of aspects, and while some of the magic from the first season is lost, their ultimate message is shown more eloquently than other series, and I respect that they're using the usual cliches to make their own thing, without just aping off what they are referencing.
The whole thing with the orbital elevator the hostages and the debris fall this Gundam really was a product of its time I was a sophomore in high school on September 11th 2001 I remember the tragedy of that day like it was yesterday the horror in the futility of it in this scene really captures apportion a small portion of that feeling it's my favorite episodes in the season for that fact oddly because of how powerful of a moment it was
There's more to 00 Riser than just weapons and engines. It's main purpose is stabilization of Twin Drive sync - mentioned in the show, because both drives are not 100% compatible coming from different Gundams. To have 100% compatible GN drives they must be build specificially for this purpose which Celestial Being achieves only few years later in 00 Quanta. 00 Riser helps 00 Twin Drive system to achieve 100% sync. Also with 00 Riser 00 Gundam can achieve true TransAm, because again - 100% sync rate between both drives.
I believe in either the SEED or Destiny vid, you mentioned how it was a poor attempt at paying homage to 0079. I think Ribbons in 00 is one of the good attempts at that with his suits, both Reborns and 0 Gundam reference 0079 along with the Japanese voice actor, which was already mentioned in another comment. In case of Liu Mei, while we are fed (too much) exposition that she wanted to change the world, I think it wasn't clearly explained why she felt that way, or maybe wasn't explained enough. It is a shame considering they had a lot of time to repeatedly explain why she's in that grey area but not why she felt that she needed to change the world right away. For Lyle, while I agree with most of the points mentioned, I still like how s1 was already building up on him a bit. It was as little as a brief appearance and a mention but it helps in not making him look like just a Neil clone slapped together in a rush for s2.
Excluding the movie sequel, Gundam 00 is my personal no.1 favorite Gundam series, and quite possibly the greatest non-UC series ever made alongside the oh-so-fabulous Turn A Gundam. What do we have? We have... Setsuna as the "Gundam Himself" (even his birthday coincides with the Gundam franchise itself), Ribbons as essentially "Evil Amuro", Exia and its successors being "best girls" (no wonder Setsuna prefers them over Marina or Feldt), Immortal Colasour existing to make fun of Kira's plot-armor moments, Sumeragi being one of the best female captains in Gundam ever, interesting story, interesting characters (despite some annoying ones), Innovades having silly names, awesome soundtracks (including the incredibly epic Raiser Sword theme), amazing mobile suit designs overall, and... the first time Gundam really went bonkers with Newtype magics through Innovators - aside from the Unicorn novels which were already in publication at that time. 00 gave me a fun and sometimes wild ride throughout, and I'd happily rewatch it every time I feel the desire to.
I've always considered Season 2 worse due to throwing away a lot of the multi-faction politics that made the first season so good and treating some characters really poorly, but Season 2 does pay off a lot of setup that the first does. You really can't get one without the other. It's why I still love both (and the movie despite its flaws) as a whole complete entity. Also, Season 2 is just such a spectacle that it really scratches that itch that Season 1 couldn't really do with its many lopsided battles.
One of the reasons I love Gundam 00 is that its one of the rare shows that tries to give a peek behind the curtain at how huge even a "small" clandestine organization would really have to be. It's a rough military axiom that a military organization needs 10 support personnel for every front-line combat soldier and the combined economic output of about 30 people per soldier to provide food, equipment and funding. To keep 7 Gundams and two carrier ships operating, as well as building new units, doing R&D, and maintaining its intelligence networks, Celestial Being would need *tens of thousands* of people knowingly or unknowingly working in its interests.
I was scouring the internet after I saw the last episode of season 1, luckily a few days after that I saw episode 1 of season 2, turns out i saw it at a perfect timing just before Season 2 comes out.
I love these Gundam videos and if you are doing mech series, who could forget Macross, Mazinger and the Getter series especially the Getter series with its insane and hard-core storyline and truly 70s 80s hot blooded protagonists.

Like I said in my comment in the last video I loved season 2 as much as the first the best part is you see how much character growth happens to celestial being and I love how much they develop as people(with feldt giving setsuna a flower being my favorite scene)and the action is really kick ass and kept me pumped. The final fight with setsuna against ribbons was so memorable especially with exia repair 2 fighting the 0 gundam. Of course it has its flaws but I feel the things I loved overshadowed them in my eyes.
00 was a great series. To me Trans-AM is the super saiyan of mecha suits! I didnt understand the story too well when I first watched it but the action was great. This was the redeeming series to me for the mess that was Gundam Seed.
Trans-AM is one of if not the best super mode in a mecha show I've seen. It has a logical root in the tech as presented before it's reveal, it has a significant drawback to limit it's use and prohibit it being just the new normal, and it's applicable to any machine running on the GN reactor tech. (Such as Celestial Being's ship in S2.)

I always flipflo between if they should or shouldnt have been involved like that. On one hand its interesting that theyre not and its just mutual respect
@@neloverg3774 Atleast we get closure on the potential romance between the two in the movie that followed the second season.
It's a bit different between Setsuna and Marina in Awakening of the Trailblazer manga novel
@@asimhussain8716 Haven't properly read the manga but I've seen images and yes Setsuna did use some sort of ELS power to make Marina young thus they married
@@asimhussain8716 Eh, sometimes the manga having a different chain of events is cool. Just not this time.
I will never not stan for the manga versions of Evangelion and FLCL.
Completely agree!!!! Love the dub!!!
same, 00 got me to Gundam
Gundam 00 is my favorite Gundam series. Then Iron Blooded Orphans came along and stole second place and we'll... It's nuts.
Excellent as always. I watched it as it released originally. I was seriously disappointed in SEED and 00 brought me back to Gundam. Cheers.
A non gundam friend of mine was introduced into the series via 00. He liked it and is now a fan of witch from mercury too
Make him to watch the UCs
Kelly Sheridan does a damn good job as Louise Halevy (English).
Season 2 of 00 definitely ramped things up. Loved hearing your take on this series and looking forward to your analysis of the movie!
If I'm not mistaken, OO is the only Gundam series that takes place in A.D. still and not in some far flung off distance future where somehow they changed Date measurements, not counting the Build Series'. In any case, it's one of the best Gundams out there.
The Zeonic Front music always brings me joy. So glad you add it in.
I still got it for my PS2. Fun ass game
Thanks for the Daybreaks Bell call out. Definitely one of my favorite openings outside of Wing and Gundam Top Gun.
Kenji Kawai, the composer for 00's Soundtrack, has also done other soundtracks for Ip Man, Kamen Rider, and a bunch of other IPs.
Speaking of stargazer and the 00 movie
I SUPER recommend checking out SD gundam G generation cross rays
an insanly fun and fanservice filled SRW like that focuses on non-uc gundam continuities.
You have called Double O Double Zero, the fandom police will be arriving at your home shortly to arrest you.
It is.
To become a Newtype of person, you must Innovate, not Coordinate.
The fact that all Innovades were built with an androgynous appearance may tell you sonething about Aeolia Schoenberg's tastes...
One of my favorite Gundam shows. Thank you for the restrospective, you deserve way more subs and views!
Bro that PS2 sound at the beginning just opened all my nostalgia ports. I'm leaking nostalgia man
BRO AND you are using Metal Arms Glitch in the System main theme!!!!
I just wanna say thank you for giving us great mech content. Your smooth edits and even smoother voice helps make these 40 min videos fly by
00 has the best names in anime!!! hell, best names in any media 😂
hell yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa im glad you liked 00. it is my fav series of all of gundam right next to gwitch and uc as a whole.
My comment about Gundam names in the first 00 video was alluding to Bring Stabbity, and I'm glad you got to see that.
00 is my favorite Gundam show.
Me to
I was just listening to the EDs for this and wondered when this was happening.
Loved it, I've watched almost every Gundam show since then, and I'm STILL WAITING ON THAT SEQUEL HURRY UP
(also, I heard you say "Bring Stabity" while writing this and it finally clicked that I think his name is supposed to mean Bring Stability xD)
I might be wrong but I think that sequel was a stage play.
@@ferhog7705 I'm sure I remember seeing a reference sheet art of Graham Aker after surviving the events of the movie, so I'd be surprised if they put effort into that to not make it at all
@Ferhog the stage play and sequel are different things, heck there's even a promo for.
I reiterate that Patrick is the man, and I was so glad he got a happy ending.
Exactly what lessons were applied to G-Witch? I find that show so frustrating to watch.
I think Kadelia was the only female character that was better handled than Relena or Lacus.
The immortal Patrick is so good that he lived past 00
Gundam 00 is still my favorite Gundam series
Season 2 is amazing. Ep 14 is a personal favorite
If I'm not mistaken, Gundam 00 and Code Geass were created around the same time by Studio Sunrise. When a season of one show ended the season of the other show would begin, and the former would go into production while the latter show was running.
We were spoiled 2006-2009, as we had Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, and Gundam 00.
As someone who was part of a group who watched S1 live with a bunch of friends, the wait was painful for S2.
****ing Ribbons was a meme for a reason.
00 feels like the writers of the show took a look at gundam wing and decided to improve upon it and fix the things that weren't given much thought even if they change the plot a bit.
i cry my ass off when Anew die and song Trust You play and i still did when re-watch that scene😂
I love this anime, makes me feel like a Gundam
It makes you feel like a giant, mechanical war machine? Okay....
30:26 You neglected to mention that the reason this was so funny was because it was after we were shown the other pilots saying the names of their loved ones.
This AU deserves a follow-up in the form of a season 3.
It has a movie
Or a 50 year or so time jump
Or an anime about one of the side story's like 00f
@@bombomos that's the movie ending
The story is complete, though I really want to see ELS Qan[T] in action.
Ayyyyy glad you liked Season 2. Look forward to seeing your thoughts on the movie, I think it gets wayyyy too much shit.
The joy you feel when saying gundam names is contagious
00 I still my favorite Gundam series. It’s so good!
Yeah 1st season is my favorite and what got me back into Gundam since I was younger
00 has the most Gundam of all Gundam Names
The whole thing with the orbital elevator the hostages and the debris fall this Gundam really was a product of its time I was a sophomore in high school on September 11th 2001
I remember the tragedy of that day like it was yesterday the horror in the futility of it in this scene really captures apportion a small portion of that feeling it's my favorite episodes in the season for that fact oddly because of how powerful of a moment it was
Roots of the mecha anime is making me feel hyped, hope you cover stuff like mazinger z and getter robo.
The longest two weeks of my life has just come to an end & I'M THANKFUL!!!!

As a Mexican fan, 00 brought me back to the series after Gundam Wing.
Awakening of the Trailblazer soon
I like the metal arms music showed up when we went to the dark side of the moon
I love these Gundam videos and if you are doing mech series, who could forget Macross, Mazinger and the Getter series especially the Getter series with its insane and hard-core storyline and truly 70s 80s hot blooded protagonists.
I think everyone agrees that 'Trust You' is the best 00 ED song
Just commenting early after release for the Algorithm. Catch this later but happy to see it out. Thanks a bunch!
8:51 is it just me or does Billy look like our main man without the mustache goatee beard combo
It is refreshing and also depressing that this awesome channel has more views than it does subscribers!
I'm different nothing to do with me it's all happening in a different world Ingloring reality like that is just a kind of inadvertent malice
I absolutely love that line
Yep, I love that shell shattering realization that Saji is forced to finally understand that he cannot run away. He Fucked up, and he fucked up hard, costing the lives of A LOT of innocent people trying to stop the A-LAWS.
@@danielramsey6141 I love to is that it's tiaria of all people that basically tells him you screwed up because you wanted to ignore the problem own up to it and do the right thing from now on
I think out of all the gundam meister's tiaria is the one that grew and matured the most
@@anthonyjordanmoviesandmore2470 It's really nice to see that the two most aloof characters in S1 have grown to be really emotional in the 2nd half. Tieria expresses this the most while Soran became more open minded and able to read the mood.
What I love about S2 is that it's all about the consequences if peace and unity not exactly what people would hope for.
almost 20 years yet still hold one of the best gundam series👌👌👌 i would like to see the prequel and alter 00 Series animated tho
Cant tell you how much I appreciate the FF9 soundtrack in the back.
Im actually playing through FF9 right now and its such a classic.
We really need a 00 season 3, like a new generation
We are getting one in 4 years.
Source?
Astroboy and Cyborg 009 are definitely unique works to look into as you venture into that realm of Anime. I especially have a fondness of the early 200s adaptations of them as they feel fully featured productions that are simple but with points made about modernism and humanity.
Lol maybe in like 3 years you can review Cyborg009 vs Devilman one of my personal favorite modern OVAs
Fun fact: the final main mission (7E True) in SD Gundam Battle Alliance is the finale battle of season 2 but the only once directly interrupted by the main bad of the game
Can’t wait until you get to Iron Blooded Orphans. My personal fave AU Gundam series 🤩
Best none UC series
Gundam 00
Gundam Iron blood Orphans
Gundam Seed season 1
LOVE YOUR CONTENT. love just listening to these for a trip down nostalgia lane!
if gundam 00 S1 was a 9, S2 was an 8. not as good, but still pretty dang good.
for the movie. I suggest watching more than once. it's easier to process.
Patrick managing to survive soo many battles is Impressive
Lock On Stratos pulled a classic D&D move: Replacing a dead player character with his identical relative.
