- Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing a non-spoiler review for Holly Black's debut adult fantasy novel Book of Night. This book follows past con-artist/current bartender Charlie who gets sucked back into the shady and gritty world of shadow magic, thievery, and occult secrets (think The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and season one of True Detective... but not as good).

I'm so glad I found this review-- I finished Book of Night yesterday and I felt frustrated that I wasn't able to understand large chunks of the world building/magic/shadow stuff! Thank you!
Ya there was so much stuff that was either never explained or done so too vaguely. And all the characters she just listed off with no explanation 🙄
Night Circus mentioned!! 🚨🚨 I went back and reread the Night Circus (after reading it years ago in high school) after finishing Book of Night and OMG did it change my outlook on BoN after. I didn't think it was great before, but compared to the Night Circus nothing happens! And the writing drones on so bad in comparison. Highly recommend the Night Circus to anyone who wasn't satisfied with BoN!
I 100% agree with you 😂 when I read Sephora and all the stores named I was so confused because in my head I pictured not our world. I wanted to Dnf this book so bad because I was just confused the whole time and I hated Charlie as a character.

For a really good trilogy that features shadow magic, along with other types of magic, I recommend the Risen Kingdoms trilogy by Curtis Craddock. It is set in a secondary world that has a steampunk-ish vibe. One of the main characters has a physical disability, so it is a good option in readathons with that prompt.

The absolute TRUST and FAITH you have while wearing a white shirt and drinking a red drink 🙏🏻🙏🏻 also, watching this made me realize I truly had NO idea what this book was going to be about! I think I’ll pass and just reread the folk of air trilogy again.
Hahaha, I think you're discovering why I have such a hard time keeping my white clothes in good condition, I act as if I don't need to change my behaviour at all. Ya that synopsis really gave NOTHING away. I wholeheartedly support your decision to reread folk of air again 😎
I have the same thoughts, I keep waiting to feel overwhelmed but it’s not happening, so gonna put it aside…
I was definitely shocked when you told me it was set in the real world, that was not at all what I thought the blurb promised. I will probably still read this, but I'm not nearly as sad that it's a 26 week wait for the hold at my library, though maybe it will be faster if people see reviews and decide to pass on this one now lol.

I'm 18% through the audiobook from my library and your review is spot on. I'm a Holly Black fan and this was so boring, slow, and info-dumpy. I might DNF.

I just finished this book yesterday and you put all my thoughts out there, so thank you! I liked Folk Of The Air so i had high hopes but most of the time, i was kinda bored with it tbh. I finished it mostly by preserverence lol but there were some aspects i liked, like the reveal abt Vince but it was really disappointing in the end. Lots of info dump and names upon names that i had no idea who they were, lack of explanation abt anything... Wouldn't read it again. I usually shove books i read upon my sister but not this time 🤣
What a bummer that it wasn't what you were hoping for. I've never felt drawn to Holly Black's books but I feel like she has a vibe that readers would expect from her and this doesn't sound like it at all. :/ I wonder sometimes if authors decide to try going from YA to adult not because of the specific story they have in mind but because of other marketing or publishing considerations? I can't remember who but I feel like there was another fantasy author that came out with an adult book that was really just more of their YA stuff.
It was such a weird miss for me. I hadn't been excites but it still felt like a big disappointment

I hate to say it, but nothing about this sounds intriguing to me. And why did no one tell us it was going to be set in the real world!?
I already didn't love The Folk of the Air (it was just fine imo), so I am now very hesitant about this one.

Exactly! How did it not talk about the setting in the synopsis. I shouldn't have been surprised bc a lot of her YA stuff is with the faerie stuff added. But... I just didn't see that coming. Maybe the audio book narrator will add atmosphere and it will be better? 🤷♀️ I feel bad turning people off this but it just wasn't it for me
@@Kristenisfullybookd You shouldn't ever feel bad for sharing your honest opinion. Maybe someone will find this review and actually realize that your negative is a positive for them. In any case, I think that these types of reviews are super helpful in helping people decide which books are worth their time, so I am super glad you shared it!! ☺
