- There was plenty of hype for the biggest swell of the year and it definitely lived up to expectations. Things were a little slow in the morning, but by lunchtime it was fully nuking over at Uluwatu.
There were a few guys towing into huge waves at the Bombie, and quite a big crowd paddling at Outside Corner. We decided to film the Bombie exclusively for this session, and got as close as we could to the action. We hope you enjoy our short recap of the afternoon.

Chill was my first thought. This wave is the essence of surfing imo. In fact, I bet all surfers would prefer surfing this over teahupoo if their goal is to have fun.

Nearly drowned in Uluwatu back in 1981 surfing that same break.... no such thing as a jet ski, just a guy on a carved out wooden canoe to save me...

Those are some of the longest rides and glassiest wave faces I've ever seen on video. Beautiful stuff.
Back in the 80s they paddled into swells that size at uluwatu, good riding though, but total respect for the demonstration of competence from the dudes on the jetskis and for the best surfing footage ever, especially lack of music.
1:30 is one of the coolest things ive seen yet. The awareness is incredible

Happens a few seconds after 1:25. It's called a "Punch Out/Through" Typically used when the wave in front is collapsing and you don't want to straighten out.

Seriously. That is perhaps the most remarkable thing about this video. It’s Uluwatu - obviously the waves are spectacular, especially in this swell. But it’s so cool to watch with the actual sound of the ocean. Lots of great music in surf videos, but it’s refreshing to just have the realness. Perhaps that should be one of your trademarks.

Maybe he wishes he could go back and learn to surf at a younger age. At least for me, I'm too old to learn surfing waves like this. I've already injured myself skateboarding so many times, surfing waves would destroy me. Being able to surf at all, let alone huge waves, is a dream for many of us. Thus we question our life choices that led us to where we are now.

Nice video. I was there in 1988, and took video, but lost it now. Must be one of the best surf spots in the world. Really long rides. No jet skis when I was there.

I was at Uluwatu last week. It was above my surf ability, so I watched from the bar with a Bintang. Saw a dugong, though, so that was nice.
What a perfect day. Love it! No lineup, long rides and a pickup. Gnarly duck dives occasionally, but epic payoff!

So burly! Man, I got married to my wife who is from Borneo right up the way from Uluwatu, on a golf course over over by Dreamland Beach. That place was amazing. I am surprised I didn’t see these kinds of gnarly waves when we were there. The surf at Dreamland was rad but this is incredible.

In 96, when I was 16, my Dad hired a Suzuki Jimny and drove me to Uluwatu. The shitty petrol made the Jimny rattle like a money box under load, and we had to turn off the "air conditioning" to go uphill 🤣 We got there and I was easily the youngest. It was a hell of a paddle, 8 foot, beautiful. There were heaps of Americans dropping in on anyone amd everyone. I was riding a lid, but being young they seemed to leave me alone. The memories are still so vivid and I'm so grateful my Dad went to the effort to get me there.

Excellent filming. Not sure I'd be happy if I was out there paddling with all them Jetskis running around.. guys have been Paddling in on big days at Ulus for decades. Can't help but think that Johnny Dee and the Paddle in Crew are not super happy to see 5, or 10? Jetskis flying around in the line up? Great job filming. Excellent drone work. Excellent surfing.

Seems like one of the mellowest big waves around. Then again, they're big fricking waves, so I'd guess they're only as mellow as your first trip to the washing machine.

My only ride on ski was from Jason Child's ski after some photo's on that right on the east side. Thank you for the cool video..
It's not really ski protection. The skis do their own thing. Maybe they would help someone with a snapped board or something but all the guys out there aren't depending on the skis

@@Samklemens The tow-in guys are protected by the ski's. What I was referring to. I LOVED paddle-in guys on the rhino chasers. Cool shit. Yup, I surf a right on the east side of Bali, it makes ULU look tame when larger. No protection. No help.
@@Killemgrillem00 Are you referencing the ND main peak? Because I've often felt ND is to Ulu, what Ulu is to Dreamland
@@Samklemens I surf the right at Nua Dua Geger Mid feb thru end of April, then the wind changes to the west side. Yes the right into Chickens.. When Ulu is head high and a half with 150 people we surf Geger/ Nusa is thriple overhead + with 15 people spread out over a few take off spots,and it's a lot heavier i think. .. My Profile Pic is The Top at at 7 to 10 ish foot. And your comparison is on..

Surfing used to not pollute now we have a noisy filthy jet ski for each surfer great going. Paddling and take offs are important parts of surfing imho. Sweet waves though and yeah like this anyone can challenge such waves.
