What's confusing me is that they charge you higher fees for Lulu Direct because they say it's to cover fulfilment fees, but yet I'm paying that higher fee AND they're charging me a fulfillment cost on top of their Lulu Direct cost.
The high "distribution fee" has caused us to take our books off Amazon. Amazon isn't going to sell your Lulu book for free, that's their fee. It made the book cost higher for customers too and some were lost in shipping. Besides, we had too much competition on Amazon, as you noted. Good video.

Are there alternatives or better if I want to sell on my website directly so that I don't need to do any printing and delivery
I'm trying to find a print on demand company that directly connects to etsy. Do you know of one? If I take the order for a planner to be printed, can I send it to lulu press and have them print and directly ship to a customer? Is there a way to automate that?

Yes - Printify.com is a print-on-demand company that can connect with Etsy stores to facilitate and fulfill print-on-demand orders. Before switching to the Lulu Direct App I explored some of the journals on Printify. Printify partners with many distributors to fulfill print-on-demand orders - because of this the product quality can vary. You might consider opening a Printify account (it's free) and then ordering some sample journals from various distributors to see if they will meet your needs. I will plan to do a video on Printify so I can show the journals I created (before switching to Lulu) and to share my experience using Printify (more pros than cons).

Another print-on-demand company that seems to be popular, but has mixed reviews, is Printful: www.printful.com/integrations/etsy
As to your other question - I have heard of people taking orders on Etsy and then placing an order on Lulu and having it shipped to the customer's address. I haven't done this myself so I cannot say if it works well.
The only way to automate sales through Lulu - that I can verify - are to either list your journal on Lulu's bookstore and drive traffic to your journal listing, or, to use the Lulu Direct App on a Shopify website. However, I did a bit of research just now and came across this conversation thread in an Etsy forum - if you scroll down a bit you'll see a comment from "The Vintage Pixel Shop" that outlines a potential workaround to connect Etsy with Lulu by using Shopify as a conduit: community.etsy.com/t5/Managing-Your-Shop/How-do-I-sell-products-that-I-have-on-Amazon-on-Etsy/td-p/125803613#:~:text=Etsy%20does%20allow%20connection%20to,then%20ship%20them%20our%20yourself. I can't confirm that it would work well for you, but it might be worth considering.

I only see Lulu direct on the Shopify App Store. Did they discontinue Lulu press?
Lulu Press (aka Lulupress.com) is still active. Lulu Direct (formerly known as Lulu Xpress) is the correct app to use for Shopify. They are both run by Lulu Press.
