I don’t like that warlocks can never take advantage of the 6th level upcasting feature. That being said, my war wizard uses this spell to make permanent duplicates of his spell book. They’re encased in glass.
I think I agree with your reasoning. It might cause someone to be frightened or sickened for the same reason that the smell of food causes you to feel sick after you've already stuffed yourself. It doesn't loose that effect just because it's an illusion. Nor would it necessarily fail to cause someone to become frightened just because it's an illusion

I'm playing an illusionist wizard and by far thus far this is my signature go to spell. enemies coming up on you and the sorlock? Illusion a firey pit around you two, smelling of brimstone, warth wafting from it. Wanna scare away bandits from a town while the rest of the party is away? Hide your familiar in a giant flaming bird then cast dragon's breath so if they question the talking flaming bird it breaths fire at them. Have to sneak by a giant personification of the shadowfell? Major image a hiding spot and malleable illusion it in tandem with a distraction from the paladin's glowing steed running off and the earth genasi having the party pass without a trace. Wanna fool the party that the 'woman' that just swooped in to save them isn't the illusionist wizard? Illusion yourself chasing after her to get your spell book back (which also explains why knows all your spells while being an obvious sailor moon parody. No one expects the alter ego of the quiet friendly wizard to be a loud and proud anime protagonist, not even the party!)

hallucinatory terrain is better for the fire pit because it doesn't require an action every turn to keep it animated.

If you could make the smell of a poison that an npc knows and then convince them they are poisoned could it do psychic damage?
Hello
Major imagine can't be used to change the appearance of a person or things. Disguise self and seeming already does that.
Fake armies are doable potentially.
