    At their best, ticket machines will sell you the ticket you need and help you avoid ticket-office queues when you're late for a train.
    But at their worst, they're a maddening waste of time; unable to sell the tickets you want and leaving you in the dark about the validity of your ticket, as our ticket machines nightmares video shows.

    As a train nerd u can confirm I ALWAYS buy my tickets from ticket offices. Ticket machines won't sell you a zones 1-9 plus national rail to your destination ticket via any route but the ticket office will and you will pay less by doing it this way.

    You cannot ask a ticket machine a question, they are probably only being used for the same routine journey. It’s just another way of cost cutting. As people are happy to buy online do away with the cost ly machines and have manned stations where tickets can be purchased.I believe the rail companies are only interested in commuters with large pay packets. It’s time we realised the importance of rail travel for all and a well run network for the whole country.

    Thanx a lot for the video. Paradoxically, it is quite comforting knowing that such absurds are not only in Poland. However, a good thing about Polish railways is that you can buy a ticket online and print it ot download it to your smartphone, whereas being a tourist planning a visit to the UK you can only choose between collecting your pre-booked tickets from the vending machine at an airport (what if the machine is temporarily out of service) or, on an extra payment, order the postal delivery of your tickets (what if they get lost on the way).

    In Germany, we have a DB (DB = Deutsche Bahn = German Railways) ticket machine, even if a competing company operates there. Their machines also shows you your detailed journey, so which train to take and where to change. The first step is always to say at which date at what time you wanna start, you can't get around this. When connections are displayed, the different prices for different trains are shown next to each other, so e.g. the local train ticket is 4,70€ but it needs one hour more than the high speed train, which costs 15€ regular (flexible) or, let's say, 8€ saver fare. There are also options if you're using a DB Bahncard (discount card) and other companies discount cards are also excepted, e.g. Austrian Railway's VorteilsAbocard (Advantage Abonnement Card). In most places, bus or any local transport tickets can be purchased at DB ticket machines too.
    So, tl;dr: even though DB has many many options and huge menu, I think it's easier than British train tickets.

      SimonHellinger I agree, you can do just about everything on a DB ticket machine. Any date until Fahrplanwechsel and for any relation. The integration of Verkehrsverbünde into DB machines is slowly happening, but the information about the right ticket for a Verbund, with Zonen, Ringe, Tarifgebiete and Preisstufen is always intimidating. Unfortunately DB does not always provide a ticket machine if the station isn‘t served by DB, and so you have to use a private company‘s ticket machine, where the company has only bought in the most relevant functions for its own network. I have to use the DB ticket office if I want to travel a route where IC-Flexpreis-Tarif with Bahncard 50 and Regional-Tarifs are both valid, but the machine doesn‘t offer an IC trip because there are no further ICs during the day and the machine can‘t find a connection, even though it‘s not relevant with Flexpreis.

    nightmare number 6 - day ranger/rover tickets (those which offer unlimited travel in a certain area) these can only currently be bought from a desk at a staffed ticket office. providing you allow enough time to join a queue and buy one then that's fine. however one time i did one of these on a Sunday and the station i was starting from had a ticket office which was closed on a Sunday, so I attempted to buy it from the conductor on the train when he came round and when he did come round apparently without making a phone call to someone to get a special code its not possible to buy it on the train.

    Is the date backwards as december 1st in Germany it is 1 12? Do you have to see on the signs what time the train leaves to Karlsruhe? Could you kindly walk me through the process. I don't want people getting upset if I take to long. If I'm lucky someone might help me. Your a traveler me not so much. 64 years old it will be nice to see Germany. If you have a discounted ticket, it shows what railcard was used for it which you must present alongside the ticket for inspection for it to be valid, otherwise your dealt with as if you do not have a ticket.

      The staff on the train will check it and if you don't have it, you will be fined. But it's good that the railcard does not affect the use of other discounts. I have saved money recently.

  • @willsham45

    You want an interface that allows you to get what you want quickly and effitiantly while at the same time being open enough to allow you to get what ever ticket you want.
    Maybe I am spoilt being in cardiff where the only difference in train tickets are in the morning you cannot use some rail cards.
    But who whole system is muched up. Why are there so many different pricing options? Why do rail cards work for some stations and not others? Why is it cheaper to travel miles further. Why can it be cheaper to split your ticket without even getting off the train.
    Its all garbage
    Why should there be logic in the ticket machines when there is no logic in the ticket prices full stop.
    Just get your ticket online or from the ticket office.

    • @liamkennedy8864
      @liamkennedy8864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's no longer possible because now you must buy before you board where possible. So basically if you have left from a station that has a ticket machine or ticket office you must have a valid ticket as you board otherwise you get fined. Obviously in rural areas e.g. Cornwall where you might board at an unmanned station with no ticket buying facilities you can still buy on board but other than that you may as well use your phone tbh

    • @grassytramtracks
      @grassytramtracks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which? Ticket machines are designed for instant buys and for simple quick transactions. If you are prepared you will of booked tickets from a simple to navigate system online which is VERY clear and just press the collect button. As your example of cheapest fair I think is fine as "FCC Only" Is First Capital Connect trains Only as they are slower than Southern services and allot of people would prioritise time over cost on trains.

  • @pgbaines65
    @pgbaines65 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry Which I think you have the wrong idea about these machines. A ticket machine needs to be quick and simple most people using these need one for the next available train. Like all machine the more you put into them the more likely they are to go wrong if you are behind someone trying to find a tickets for next week from another station for next week looking for the cheapest price and your train is about to go you are going to be even less please.So ever do it on line or at the ticket office.
