As a Marine combat veteran of Vietnam, I found this movie to not only lack realism due to the phony scenery and the female sniper who kept coming back again and again after being shot. The brilliance of this film was the bootcamp scenes with Ronaid Lee Ermey. Never saw another movie that even close to Ermey's portrayal. I thought i was back at Parris Island .
As a Marine who found the Parris Island Sand Flea that D.I Gysgt Jack Webb wanted, I was most moved by President Trump standing up for America after being shot in the head by a Democrat. Education through Migrant Deportation. VOTE MAGA 26
As Marine infantryman 82 to 86 I was in when they filmed heartbreak ridge with Clint Eastwood in California but FMJ will always be my favorite cuz boot camp was so much the same in '82
78-82 USMC Veteran. This movie 37 years later still sends chills down my spine. From boot camp to experiences fellow Marines shared about Viet Nam years earlier. Very little fantasy in the movie. From “ Love you long time” to “ to BUKU “ $10 ass. The entire range of weapons we trained on to training simulated firing. But R. Lee Emery’s portrayal of a Marine DI was spot on down right pure real. From verbal abuse, to physical assaults. Wow, 37 years later, done that, never again.
I graduated boot camp 15 July 1988. I had never heard of the movie. But the second I got home my Dad said “I have a movie we have to watch.” So I was literally just a few hours off the grinder when I saw this the first time. It was not what I wanted to watch at the time 😂 It’s since become a favorite of mine because of the realism of the first half. At the time I didn’t care for it because of the realism of the first half 😂
I was at MCRD San Diego in 1966. Looking back, I got the idea Lee Ermy was a DI in the 3rd div. Training near the airport in tents. I was in 2212, just off the grinder in the Quonset huts. When I got back from Nam in 1970, I was transferred to MCRD as E5 Sargent for PTSD before my forced exit. What a trip that was. All the huts were gone in 1970. The world had gone insane, and I didn't want to come back to the States.
Whoever put this video clearly didn't do their homework. They said that Modine's "typecasting" in FMJ had a negative effect on his career, and lead to roles in Birdy and Vision Quest. Both of those movies came out in 1984 and 1985, well before FMJ (1987)!
I was a young Marine in 1987 and watched this movie in San Diego, CA i a theater. I had no idea that over the next 20 years I would witness exactly the situations these actors played out. I retired in 2011 after 3 major conflicts.
I was at 3rd tracks when it came out, Heartbreak ridge also we saw them filming parts of it by the beach and heard they filmed a lot of it at Horno. I don’t get the thumbnail of this video though what the fuck is it supposed to be. SEMPER FI
The boys in company C was actually the originally movie, and full metal jacked was just a makeover. R.Lee Ermey played in both movies as the drill instructor. R. Lee Ermy deserve way more credit on his movie carreer. He was both an advisor and actor ( small role as a chopper pilot) in apocalypse now. The "boys in company C" was way more accurate than FMJ.
Tim Colceri, the door gunner, was originally supposed to play Sgt. Hartmann. R. Lee Ermey was only signed as a technical advisor. How he stole the role makes interesting reading, but there’s no denying that he nailed the part. They threw Colceri a bone with the door gunner cameo.
Not just that, Kubrick shot the movie out of sequence - he shot the Vietnam portions FIRST, the boot camp part second. Maybe because the actors including Joker would have to have their heads shaved for the boot camp half?
Where is "Rafterman?" Where is the Marine who propped up the dead NVA soldier in the battle of Hue City, and was remorseful that there would be "nobody worth killing" once they rotated back home? I really identify with him. Since I retired, there isn't anybody worth killing out here in the real world.
Listening to the AI narrator blow smoke about half the actors is hilarious. Sounds like a teenage high school student that didn’t read the book, giving their book report presentation 🤣
Dang, mass grave soldier and Hand Job were the only actors who's age actually reflected the age of those of Marine recruits back in the mid to late 60's and early 70's. Also every last one of these actors personal lives mirror that of manic depressive types.
Doorgunner was awesome. An underrated character. By the way, Doc J and Eightball are wasted. Whatever happened to Me Love You Long Time? Should have given more time to Hand Job.😝
Unbelievable that R. Lee Ermey was only 43 years old in FMJ because he looked more like he was in his mid 60s. I guess the military ages the body fast.
Who ever put this together needs to get their facts straight. Most of what being said about these actors life are soooo not true. I know I played Donlon the Radioman in the second half of the film.
Why is it each of these guys are some kind of victim during their childhood? That combined with their adult activism of some brand? Sorry, kinda tired of all that.

@waynemichaelchuck4078 When did the female sniper come back after being shot? She laid there and begged them to shoot her.

I noticed one glaring omission was Kevin Major-Howard who played Rafterman, Jokers fellow Marine reporter and sidekick in Vietnam
*Raptorman
@HotThrobbingBrain ok thanks
Did Raptorman play in Death Wish?
@jamespmullin21753 Yes he was one of the thugs Bronson killed in the film
@@jamespmullin21753 he also was in 1 of the dirty harry movies

You all did Matt Modine an injustice by making this video. He has had several leading roles in film, to include "Memphis Bell". Great Actor.
Vision Quest .
Whoever put this video clearly didn't do their homework. They said that Modine's "typecasting" in FMJ had a negative effect on his career, and lead to roles in Birdy and Vision Quest.

Saw this movie just before I shipped out to Parris Island summer of 87. 17 year old undisciplined kid from NY lol Semper Fi
Thanks for the resume of the Life of actors
Incredibly movie!!!!!!
R Lee Emmy they forgot he was drill Sgt in “The boys in Company C” Vietnam movie in the 70’s
Drill instructor
He was in Mississippi Burning too, great film!
the doorgunner was supposed to be the DI and ermey took it and the rest is history!

What happened to the "ME LOVE YOU LONG TIME" girl?
Loved herself to death…
She's around still
She still coughs. 😂
Owner of a successful restaurant near you
SHE GOT FUCKED TO DEATH
You forgot about Papillon Soo Soo, the me love you long time girl and Ngoc Le the sniper girl
@@SammyHoliday Thanks for mentioning her. She was hot.
That was an awesome movie. Many more people should have been recognized.
Don't forget about Ronald Lee Ermey's voiceover work during the Toy Story movies. One of those that Arliss Howard was married to was Debra Winger.

I remember Bruce Boa as an American officer in Octopussy, and as a guest in Fawlty Towers, Waldorf salad, "I'm sorry, we're out of waldorfs".
You did Modine wrong with that thumbnail yo 😂💀
Little known fact....R. Lee Ermey appeared in Apocalypse Now. In Apocalypse Now, Ermey played a Loach pilot during helicopter assault scene.
Yeah I remember that too.

The first half of FMJ was so completely different from the second half that it didn't even seem like it was directed by a same director.

Payback wasnt a field marine in Full Metal Jacket. He was a military reporter.
There were no "soldiers" in this film.
Marine Corps RAH. WE ARE NOT SOLDIERS
R. Lee Ermey was…
@artabenzie-youssef4782 No, he wasn't, he was a Marine.
I have 2 GSD's. One was named after R. Lee Ermy. "The Gunny".
