When I began the process of learning how to swing the golf club, I studied the swings of male players who had smooth flowing swings. I was amazed at how players like Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Freddy Couples, and others generated so much power with seemingly little effort. I focused exclusively on men until I came across a book by Mickey Wright (Play Golf the Wright Way). It’s been a while since I read it, but it presented a whole new concept to me: the efficient golf swing. Men sometimes overcome faulty swing technique, with brute strength. Most women cannot do that, so their fallback is to swing more efficiently (better technique). When I look at the swing of Nelly Korda and her sister Jessica, I see images of Mickey Wright. Powerful , smooth, and so efficient. Love this video.

I agree. Big easy and Vijay are two dominants examples of speed\power and effortless swing.
And they really did it effortless, it's not just a perception. Well, they were also tall players which definitely helps because of bigger radius of the swing plane. Anyway, they were really masters of impact.

I encountered this phenomenon when learning Aikido. The sensei often told us that women master the movements much quicker than men. Why? Because men rely on brute force (and arm strength) whereas women learn to use their entire body efficiently.

Minnie Lee is but one player, she is a wonderful ball striker and putter. However, the greens that the lpga play on have easier pins, less speed and hold better. With that said I still think overall the pga are better in all categories. I have gleaned more from a ladies swing than a man’s swing. I have found that using some of the info I have gotten from the ladies tour has been closer to my game than a pga player’s game. Am I making sense?

@@jimpowell2296 No... since there's no Minnie Lee on the LPGA. It's Minjee Lee. The LPGA is better in all categories than the PGA (save for distance) and the quality of the play on the PGA Tour is declining, all due to the pursuit of length. I now prefer watching the LPGA because their golf swings and MOSTLY the tempo plus results is a beautiful thing to watch...

This is why I switched to the Single Plane Swing a few months back which helped me go from shooting over 100 down to consistently getting in the low 90s and even broke 90 once this year. I just started golfing this year and made the switch to the single plane swing around June. My ball striking is not as good as Moe Norman since I don't have the time to hit 800 balls a day, but I'm slowly getting there. His swing style (taught by Todd Graves) made me actually love using my driver now since I rarely slice or hook it since my backswing plane and downswing plane are within an inch or less of each other. It's probably as simple as it can when it comes to golf swing styles with the only real challenge being consistent solid ball strikes which is a challenge for most golfers.

My belief is for short game (forty yards in) any golfer can become the best in the world because you don't have to have a physique or the power to drive the ball 300 yards or hit a seven iron 200 yards. As Anika Sorenstam said after her attempt to make the cut in a PGA event - it looked like the pins were not even on the greens - she preferred the LPGA set ups with the pins way closer to the middle of the greens. It is much easier to get close to pins that are not tucked. But over-all, men can do the things that the women can do much easier than trying to copy the men on the PGA tour where they play at the edge of what the body is capable of without severe injury.

Simple answer is that the average PGA course length is 7200-7500 yds. whereas the average LPGA course length is 6200-6500 yds. Over 18 holes, that equates to approx. 55 yds./hole. If you can't blast your drive over 300 yards you don't have much of a chance against the men, especially when the top guys like McIlroy are bombing it over 340 yds. I could not agree more that the ladies' tour has more elegant-looking swings (the Kordas, Jin Young Ko etc.). However, no insult intended, they don't play the same courses as the men. The speaker says he doesn't subscribe to the view that men play longer courses. Really? You actually think that? Again, I love their swings (except Lexi Thompson whose swing is becoming more and more "Frankenstein").
The men play consistently longer courses. They have to sacrifice elegance of swing for power of swing since they have 500 yard par 4s and 250 yard par 3s especially in Majors. I have been fortunate enough to play a couple of times the week after a men's event and a women's event, neither of which were majors. The men's course was longer holes, narrower fairways, deeper rough and much faster greens. The women's course was much shorter, wider fairways, shorter rough (the tractors were out cutting that Monday) and the greens were not being cut that week.
I shot 96 on the men's course (I usually shoot 84). I shot 82 on the women's course. The shorter 3s, 4s and 5s made a huge difference to a dinosaur like me.
Love the LPGA and their swings but it's simply a different game. I'm OK that it's different but please don't tell me it's the same.

  • @stevencucinotti3592

Lets explain why Minjee Lee hit it closer. The biggest reason is because the LPGA sets the pins in the middle of the greens even on Sunday and the greens are much softer to take shots. There is rarely a tucked pin with danger to one side. They also play courses where you can run the ball up on the green with nothing in front. The cuts of rough are much lower making approach shots much easier into unguarded greens. If the men played the woman's courses they would be knocking pins down all day and shoot 35 to 40 under. You are correct the woman's swings are fundamentally more technically sound but that is because woman let the weight of the clubhead swing the club where men, who are stronger, tend to muscle the club. Please look at the deeper reasons. Then making a comparison as if they were exact same conditions.

Men can power out of mistakes not possible for most women. I suggest attending an LPGA event to view some perfect swings. Looking at the PGA tour you will see many variations of swings not so with the LPGA.

Men have loads more muscle strength to get in the way, they can compensate for imperfect technique with ‘grunt’ - most women can’t so have to have good technique. The problem is that women have to turn their hips far more than men (which they CAN do) to make up for the lack of swing speed (which they can NOT do). They are prettier swings, but men physically are not able to recreate them.
There have been a number of case studies that have shown that this is the single most important factor.

I’m not saying there aren’t aspects of women’s swing that can’t be instructional to men, just that we can’t recreate them. Btw, Lydia Ko now uses a version of the “A-Swing”, which totally impacted her legacy imo, because her career trajectory was on higher path than Annika’s.
She wanted change the same way Tiger did with Butch, but their reality were their swings in their true primes, were better than any that came after.
