at the beginning, i'm scratching my head wondering what in the NFT QR code name is that IH logo on your shirt? d'oh it's strings from your hoodie😂. Strangely i like the 21st century appearance the strings give to the IH logo 😊 thanks for sharing with us.
Come on guys. That poor Minnie isn't evil, she's just been abused so much that she's scared. Once she gets a taste of being treated like a queen, she will purr like a kitten. She reminds me of a cat that came to my house. I had to trap her and keep her in a cage for a while until she got used to me. Once she realized that I wouldn't allow her to attack me and that I wouldn't hurt her, she got so tame that I had to be careful not to step on her.
LOL, glad I'm not the only one busting his chops about it! I know it's a lot of work, both physically and mentally as each and every piece seems to fight him. I'm sure he will make some good headway though this winter, might even get some wheels soon!
It's nice to see Preparation H out of the garage and back on the road again! This is the video I've been waiting on for 3 months. Thank Levi for finding that new batch of paint.
Thanks to Levi for the paint. Squatch, nice to see you back in the shop and nice to see the Farmall running and sounding fantastic. I’m glad the head gasket and the lock tight took care of the sleeve issue. Thanks for an enjoyable video.
Much appreciated, yes there is a lot of walking back and forth and pre-planning of shots to get all the different angles when I’m doing it all myself 👍
I was concerned, the audio from my TV made it sound like the engine was constantly surging, I switched to my phone to hear it run really well, great job as always
The H is looking fantastic Toby - such a fun video, we enjoyed the ride around your properties... and the fall colors! Plus, our appreciation for Levi's contribution!
Hopefully, changes in the economy over the next few years will make it profitable to do things like manufacturing new parts for these tractors. There are many of us who wouldn't take a modern tractor if you gave it to us. Kudos to Levi C.
Good job Squatch and thanks for the video. I hope you get the painting window you're looking forward to, but if you get snowed in, I look forward to what ever projects you have lined up to video and share with us. Thanks again.
Excellent Video Squatch 253 (Toby JR) :) nice got that Levis found paint can for you too and motor repair fix this Farmall up to for also super sounds too! Happy Veterans Day to and in Canada we called Rememberance Day!
That was the sweet, sweet sound of success! She purrs like a kitten. I truly hope you get the painting window you're looking for. I know you'd like to get the paint wrapped up so you can put this project to bed. Speaking of paint, outstanding job, Levi C! Way to save Toby's bacon!
I'm with you- if it has quieted down in the 2 hours, give it 10 more of good work and see. I've had plenty of times with geartrains that a couple of hours of runtime got them to bed into each other after some initial grumbles. Not like you need to hear it, but if it does quiet down, still change that oil! Love the work sir!
Toby, don't know why I noticed it so much today but the "H" looks beautiful. I love the hardware that is not covered with paint that sparkles like jewels. An absolutely fantastic job. I remember how bummed you were when you saw all that water in the oil but you really turned it around. Great job!
Like you, I am a strong believer on letting old engines run for a few minutes when cold, just to shake the chill from their bones. Engines burn fuel vapor & cold manifolds & heads do not contribute very much to the conversion of liquid to gas. However, high vacuum does help a lot & at a fast idle, the engine smooths out nicely & the vacuum is usually ay it's peak. Letting it warm up with little or no load is kinder to all the moving parts, so engines last longer, & run better once they are warm. Old taxi drivers who shared cabs over 16 or 24 hour shifts drove squillions of miles on engines that almost never shut down, & they will boast of mileages too high for me to count. So for best power, best fuel usage & longest engine life, warm the sucker up a little & operate gently until it's up to operating temperature. Our engines will love us even more.
That’s also why I love the old Caterpillar “Pony Start” systems, the little starting engines were there to bear the brunt of the warmup cycles, and if operated properly they pre-lubed and pre-heated the big diesels before compression or fuel was even introduced. Unfortunately though, a lot of people still tried to operate them just like they were electric starters which took the maximum toll on BOTH engines.
@@squatch253 Here in Oz, I worked [for over 40 years] with a company that had D7e four cylinder models. In the snowfields, one operator in particular, would start the 'donkey' engine [as we called them] & let it run while he slowly rolled a smoke. He then engaged the low gear & rolled the engine over while he sipped his coffee & had his smoke. Next he engaged the high gear [our donkey engines had two speed gears] & sat in the seat just enjoying the morning. Only when he was satisfied that all was well would he introduce fuel & compression. Even then, he let it run till he was happy with the coolant temperature before moving off. I was both a plant mechanic & the area fleet Manager [govt department] & I loved those old D7e models, they worked so hard & the hotter they got [within specs] the harder they pulled at laying in phone cable behind a ripper. All of our D7e tractors gave us good service [except for the one that fell off the low loader at speed] & the one operated by the aforementioned gave the lowest cost per hour over its lifetime than the others. They were the best.
Thanks for the video Toby! It's great you got the H back together with no engine noise. Thank you Levi for finding and sending Squatch the much needed paint. Cheers

😀I have been watching waiting for this episode to see two see how the sleeve "fix" worked. Really happy with the results! I've really enjoyed the whole series on the H and look forward to your next endever. I know you are busy, but you do such a professional job on your restorations that when you're done they are better than new. Thank you for the enjoyment you have given me.
Around 12:08 the tire speed must have matched the frame rate of the camera, because the tires looked like they stopped spinning and you’re just gliding along the road. 😂
I seriously thing there is no better sounding engine in farm equipment than the International Harvester Farmall H ! I sure do miss my 1947 Farmall H. Going for ride in 5th gear was sooo enjoyable.
This might be too late but you can easily improve the paint on the tinwork with a wet sand and buff. The single stage martin seynour paint easily buffs to a mirror gloss finish. I just completed a Super M repaint using the same PCC135IH paint. I wet sand with 1500, 2000 then wool pad buff and finish with a polish. Turned out beautiful. Your H is looking great, you've done a nice job.
Stay tuned, I’m hoping to finish the wet sanding stage today but due to many bad decisions I made the day I sprayed the paint, I didn’t have a good enough layer of paint to save 👍
I know it will run just fine , having a competent technician in charge . But I have to say that is the best , show quality tractor I've seen . Headed to Concourse de Elegant ...in Florida.. Pebble Beach I think.......?
Well it looks as if you have things sorted. Kind people like Levi give me hope and I also hope you get your paint window to finish the project. I swear by the Pertonix units, I've had one in my Mustang for about 10 years and had no issues. It definitely improved starting and idling over the Chinese points.
You will get all the squeaks, shudders and growls wiped out on this beast Toby. I heard that rattle and I said to myself "This is not like Toby to ignore something like that" and yes I was right you were onto it. Read you like a book mate. When you finish this Tractor, you might as well park it not at the "Red Shed" but in a Rolls Royce-like museum. Looks very nice indeed. Glad to be able to follow the build and your dedication along with Squatch Senior's also. Regards
Excellent video the H is sounding good. The transmission gears seems to have gotten better as you drove it more. That is a common sound in most Farmall tractors of that vintage. It seems every brand has its own sound like a 77 and 88 Oliver I have drove them so much when I hear their sound even at threshing shows I know what is coming through the parade
Glad that you got more IH red paint. What you have put on looks good from my house. I am not a fan of tricycles but you have done a great job with that tractor. That engine sound reminds me of the 8N I had in the late 1970s-80s.
It is always nice to see things come together or in this case mesh, great job. The time will come for good painting weather and when it does I am sure you will be ready. The biggest slowdown for you was your eye surgeries and from what I can see you are seeing well, so congrats on that as well. When I was driving new vehicles, tight stirring was a dangerous proposition, but with time the play would come around so not every hand movement ended up in jerky steering. The best to you and Senior. Oh, at one point on your return ride the rotation of your tires synced with your camera speed and they appeared to stop turning while at the same time the wheels kept spinning, quite the optical allusion.
Hay Toby, that “H” sure sounds good. Here’s hoping those gears wear in and quite down. Stuff like that drives me nuts also my friend. Hopefully your weather window presents itself and you can install decals and call that sister done.
Love the hoodie!! Question: After you retorqued the head did you have to recheck the clearances on the valve or do they stay in the correct position taking the shaft off and then putting it back on? 😀🇨🇦
They never looked this good coming from the factory ,this is Toby beautiful looking that's for sure ,parade ready that's for sure ,taking in the field to plow or disk would be a sin this is living room art you created it's just beautiful
Glad to see it out running! Shouldn't your gears should mesh in and quiet down with use? I personally would be more concerned that it was a bearing but shouldn't be since you changed that bearing unless you got a bad bearing. I wish you had to way to load it down with out driving and to get vibration or sound level readings before and after a work out. Glad to see you and spend time on your tins. Just scuffing or complete strip down (cause your clearance is so tight that the extra paint layer will cause interference)? Are you putting it down in your New building for the winter as well as your tins if you don't get decent weather to paint this fall? That should free up lots of room for X231 so she can stretch.
I know you've said all along the Red Shed is storage only. And not sure you have enough projects down the line that require painting. But what about getting one of those inflatable paint booths. It could be put up in there. No bugs, or leaves or wind. You could heat enough in the spring and fall to paint in there. I know there's no power to run your air compressor but a generator can take care of that. Then that opens up a bigger time frame for painting. Just a thought.
The next build that’ll be taking place further up on the hill out there will cover all of those bases for me - after a few more years of saving that is 👍
Engine runs good and sounds strong since rings are already seated I noticed you reused the oe rocker arms did you replace the one that had worn bushing Leave those gears alone they will "burn in" as we use to say Hope the weather cooperates next week
Good eye lol 👍 I ended up finding out that those forged style rocker arms must be slightly different from the welded ones because after I got them all bolted down I wasn’t able to get full valve lash adjustment before the adjuster screws bottomed out, so I sourced a replacement welded rocker for the old loose one and put the rest back in 👍
Excellent news! Worst case scenario if weather doesn't agree...Do you have a friend or body shop close by that would let you use their paint booth for an afternoon?
The body shops around here usually try to avoid these “custom jobs” since they’re mostly just set up to do the collision work with the insurance companies.
good to see the H up and going again also quite curious if you folks seen any noticeable difference in the garden this year after senior chisel plowed it ??
Hey Squatch. I have an idea for the issue with the shims under the upper bearing race in the X231 bolster. I was thinking that you could put the bearing race on the upper bearing of the steering sector with a straight edge across it and clamp it together with your beam puller bar and a couple pieces of all thread. Snug it up evenly and take the measurement from the gasket surface to the straight edge. Then you could use the straight edge to get the measurement from the gasket surface of the bolster to the bottom of the bore for the bearing race. With these measurements, you can determine how thick the shim would have to be to give you the adjustability at the gasket surface to get the preload that you need. I'm looking forward to seeing you get back to that poor abused tractor. She just needs to be loved enough to get over the trauma she's been through.
Nice to see the head bolts tighten upas much as they do. Would the constant mesh gears out of a W4 fit in an H if you could find a quiet W4 donor tractor?
After you run and pull it hard enough for a while, if it quiets down some, may I suggest using a gear oil from Redline. Harley Davidson, and Baker Racing transmissions recommended it 👍 It’s about 40w viscosity BUT it has an SUS rating of 85-250 😱 I run it in my $4,000 transmission for years
Thanks for the tip, my current gear oil is an 85-140 and even with that I’d sometimes like something heavier in these old straight-cut gear transmissions 👍
Brother Squatch: Love your content! Have a question for you. Would you know if a wide front end from a Farmall 560, would fit on a regular Farmall M? Juanster

That's a sweet ride. You can go to town with that one.
well it is about time you got back to work 😁 next is X231 🥳🥳🥳
Looks and sounds great! Next building project a paint booth?!
Holy rolling shutter effect 12.17
You're a speed freak mad man on that hotrod. 😂
Awesome Job!! Squatch
Run some Moreys oil additive in the gearbox , will quieten it right down, saving a tear down !
Good show Levi!
Nice to see the head bolts tighten upas much as they do. Would the constant mesh gears out of a W4 fit in an H if you could find a quiet W4 donor tractor?
Yes, those constant mesh gears are the same on W-4 and H.
After you run and pull it hard enough for a while, if it quiets down some, may I suggest using a gear oil from Redline. Harley Davidson, and Baker Racing transmissions recommended it 👍
It’s about 40w viscosity BUT it has an SUS rating of 85-250 😱 I run it in my $4,000 transmission for years
Thanks for the tip, my current gear oil is an 85-140 and even with that I’d sometimes like something heavier in these old straight-cut gear transmissions 👍
I was thinking the same thing about the gears, a good workout may just quiet them down.
Thanks for finding the paint Levi! Do you have tractors too?
Thanks Levi
Brother Squatch:
Love your content!
Have a question for you.
Would you know if a wide front end from a Farmall 560, would fit on a regular Farmall M?
Juanster
Thanks! I do not know if that wide front would fit though.
Juanster: there a deeper meaning in “Brother” as you used the word? Anything to do with travelling?
