I think this is a solution without a problem. pressed wood molding isn't hard to work with and goes up in seconds. A solid miter saw and a tape measure and I can put crown molding in a house in an hour or two.
I got the molding at Home Depot, but I am having an issue with the finishing angle to come to a stop. I am installing this type on my kitchen cabinets. I am stopping short of a corner. Uggghhh....Any help would be appreciated.
The one he used is a Festool brand that is included with the Festool Kapex miter saw he was using. Amazon sells them for about $155. Starrett makes a nice miter saw protractor for about $120 cheaper.
it's a Festool sm-ks 120 bevel you can get a low tech simple one from Trend a anglefix mitre guide thats a lot cheaper so if some one drops it stands on it or someone with sticky fingers walks off with it you wont cry

This foam crown molding system is targeted to the homeowner DYI market. It is really less than desirable for a professional installation. Foam is lightweight and stable but doesn't really allow for an ideal appearance such as coped corners and scarfed joints which lessen the chances of gaps developing over time due to movement. I always try to avoid egg & dart patterns since they are difficult to align, I prefer dental patterns.
petemclinc I couldn't agree more but even as a home owner my self I'll take wood every time I've used this stuff twice thinking it would look good and is half the price of real wood put like you said it was gaps galore specially around the windows and doors and in my opinion it's not as forgiving as wood is I do like the snap in idea but this is the first I've seen of it and doubt they have such a thing for door and window framing or corner pieces

My thinking is maybe the foam is stable but the house not so much. From my experience wood is the best, it expands and contracts the same as a wood framed house.
At 7:37 when he marks the underside of the molding, you need to then deduct half the pencil width. If you don't, the crown will "run long" by half a pencil width, likely throwing off the angle, and leaving a gap at the outside corner, and the last piece against the wall.

WTH whats wrong with the way we have did crown for years. All these brackets some using drywall mud wtf waaay to much work just shoot fill holes and paint.
I cringe at so many things these guys do. How will they ever get that register out if they needed to paint it or something along the lines of that. Foam moulding is nice in some situations, but why did they pick it for that situation? Lol we’ll never know. And they are obviously not skilled enough to work with a moulding with that advanced of a profile.
This is nice but I don't like the idea that you are installing Styrofoam. It is bad for the environment. It may look nice today but when the home owner or some one else purchases the house and wants/needs to change it the Styrofoam will end up in the landfill and from what I have heard is that it can't be recycled.

Because he used the angle tool to find the exact corner angle and the foam material is not at risk of shrinking over time

They did. They used a DeWalt drill to put the clips up. Tommy didn't use his Festool CXS like he does in every other episode.
