Thanks for capturing the audio of the awesome music those 3 stacks made ! I remember when this boat, as the Jason, first came out for Union Mechling and came by our house on the Ohio River around Tell City, Indiana. I was blown away by it’s unique sound and total bad ass looks. Same with sister ship Argonaut. I’ve got original Dravo promo pics and Union Mechling brochure highlighting their towboat fleet with a sweet pic of the Jason on the cover.
I rode the Creole Jimmy when I was a young man now I'm an old man and I sure love watching these videos thank you Mark Twain so awesome to see you do such a wonderful job
And anyway was on Dan McMillan in 2005! And it's fun love that boat! Was before that on upper river but later down from St Louis! Was great experience !!!!
just watched my first tow pass through the lock at winfield mo. yesterday was neat to see. only 6 in the tow going south but i enjoyed listening to those emds purrr. i notice that this boat has 3 stacks so i wonder how many horses below deck on that monster? also noticed the adm logo on the stacks. do they lease this boat from the owner or is it more like a dedicated contract or something? adm does have there name on a lot of train cars. just curious if anyone knows
+marktwained thanks so much for the reply capt. i have watched several of your videos and plan to watch several more. its so great that you take the time to share your profession with those that no little or nothing about life on a tow boat. i have already learned a lot from your vids. thanks again. subbed.
Sorry whlhousejocky, Dan McMillan was formerly "Jason". Dravo/Neville Island, PA built 1974. Easy to confuse with her sistership "Argonaut". Nothin' in "Tokyo Drift" has 10,500hp from 3 x 16-710 DD's, Makes sliding easy...
Well, That brings back memories. I remember when the Jason came out. Homer Payton was captain on her. We were calling the home office on single side band radio every day to update the office. I was running for ORGULF and the Ohio River Company, We had one triple screw boat, the Pat Chotan who's captain was "Spider". I was on a number of boats and remember meeting the Jason, which was a historical name, being named after a stern wheel steamboat. The beautiful boats were the American Beauty, Crimson Glory, and American Heritage, named after the Rose family, known as the Rose Boats. There was an article in Fortune Magazine in the mid seventies about the Jason, which if you can find it, is very interesting reading. I still have my license, and might still go back out and do some "tripping". See you on one whistle, and thanks for the great videos, of this little covered crazy life. Island Eight Shoot is a dream compared to the Vicksburg bridges, or the Tombigbee. Capt. Dave Link Blossvale NY
Ever pilot on any ARTCO boats or know any of their captains? The grandfather of one of my coworkers is the captain of the M/V John H. MacMillian Jr....
+Keith Hunter I would not work for that company (never say never), because of dealings with them in the past. Yes, I know quite a few very good wheelmen that work for them.
Marktwained when did you work for them? Which boat was your regular boat? I was on the glory, ambassador tripped on venture Ginny stone. Took old reliance to Kenner bend for fleet boat
That is a "flanking" buoy. They are on each stern corner. They are used to judge the current speed in relation to vessel speed. We use them for making tight turns that we "flank" instead of steer.
What I'm fining interesting , what is the difference between then and today, as the water is higher , or is it that its just a different set of problems/situations.
Had to laugh when you commented on old mates thick drawl, I got a job piecing your words together... Cheers man you have got the best job in the world... Scotty...
Was on the dan in 94 capt Pierre and another capt were taking turns at the helm traveling up from morgan city la. To st.Louis think at that time it was the largest push boat around pretty sure she holds the record for most barges pushed at once.
The Robert Kyle came up with 81 in tow. One was a towboat not being used and haul all the way to St. Louis. Please let me know how many this boat push as you say was a record.
No shit Pierre was the mate when I was on The Dan. I was a green horn when I went on that boat. I think it was his stepdad Larry Brown I think was his name was the captain.
If it is bigger than the lock. It would be split for lockage. Generally tows are not larger than 1200’x105’ (3x5 barges) on locking rivers. The Lower Mississippi River tows are limited in size only by the size of the boat (horsepower)

Robert Trainor 10,500 horsepower ARTCO vessel. It is owned and operated by ADM. ARTCO is their river division.

Thats one amazing tow! 'Beast' indeed...awesome vid
my years at artco we always did 25-40 s/b. since stationary rigging been added to barges they can add the extra 200 ft to move more

marktwained Understood. Sometimes good people work for bad companies.
Marktwained when did you work for them? Which boat was your regular boat? I was on the glory, ambassador tripped on venture Ginny stone. Took old reliance to Kenner bend for fleet boat
Did not work for them. They offered me position, but we couldn’t agree on my pay scale. 🤷🏼♂️
I rode the Acadian Jane
The dan it's out of action now I've been told he'll of a vessel I was on it back in 94
whats that hanging off the starboard stern barge?????
That is a "flanking" buoy. They are on each stern corner. They are used to judge the current speed in relation to vessel speed. We use them for making tight turns that we "flank" instead of steer.
Now that's a tow, I'd love to be cranking those suckers down all day.
Scary Killer Clowns fuck that lol 15 is good enough for me
What I'm fining interesting , what is the difference between then and today, as the water is higher , or is it that its just a different set of problems/situations.
Looking good 👍
Hey capt'n... Was wondering how many tons per barge? Gross & tare...
big river, big boats... Cheers Scotty , Australia
About 1,200 ton per loaded barge.
Had to laugh when you commented on old mates thick drawl, I got a job piecing your words together... Cheers man you have got the best job in the world... Scotty...
He didn't hook her up till she was past ya
all tugs r emd powered
+timothy carey quite a few, not all.
I don’t see a name and port of registry on the stern, I thought that the rules require that.
How many tons do you think is on that? Very impressive!
It's about 1,400 ton per barge
built in 1974 by Dravo corporation out of pits burg it was originally the jason
+Shane New ....Is pits burg anywhere near, Pittsburgh?
rode my first trip on the Jason.back in 1981.caught her in Memphis.
rode the Argonaut 3 or 4 trips later.
rode her my first trip.1981
Was on the dan in 94 capt Pierre and another capt were taking turns at the helm traveling up from morgan city la. To st.Louis think at that time it was the largest push boat around pretty sure she holds the record for most barges pushed at once.
+Hubert Harned
Robert a.Kyle was pushing 82 barges plus deadboat Dave Carlton ...that year year was 1982
No problem!
The Robert Kyle came up with 81 in tow. One was a towboat not being used and haul all the way to St. Louis. Please let me know how many this boat push as you say was a record.
No shit Pierre was the mate when I was on The Dan. I was a green horn when I went on that boat. I think it was his stepdad Larry Brown I think was his name was the captain.
hey...this is Tree....I rode all of McMillan boats
dead mans curve
Anyway... Was green on the Dan
How does a barge that size go thru a lock?
If it is bigger than the lock. It would be split for lockage. Generally tows are not larger than 1200’x105’ (3x5 barges) on locking rivers. The Lower Mississippi River tows are limited in size only by the size of the boat (horsepower)
What kind of draft does that tug have
Triple screw awsome boat
Argonaut
WHAT DO YOU MEAN ( FILL OUT )
Fill out tow, or all barges picked up. I'm thinking that's what you are asking about.
10-5 it's just oozing along. But if it was north bound it probably would really be showing some wheel wash. Just come ahead on er Cap.
Anyway....
WHAT DOES ( ARTC ) STAN FOR { CAPT. }
Catfish Gray I was a deckhand on DanMcMillan in 2005. ARTCO is "AmericanRiverTransportationCo"
They are ADM river division.
That's the advanced user settings there
