When Mel was on tippy-toes trying to push a post vertical and drive a screw simultaneously, I almost shouted “Use a ratchet strap”. Then I remembered my shout might not travel from Australia to the USA very well. Still, I was obviously highly involved in what you were doing.
I worked for a home construction crew and I was calling out measurements to the 1/16 of an inch and the boss say! Boy we ain’t building pianos we building houses!
Love what you guys are doing. Reaaly wonderful to see couples working together on a dream. I have a question that you may have already answered at some point but why wouldn't you putting the decking on before doing all this? It would seem to make it 100x easier to work up there and more safely. I put my decking on before working on my porch roof and it so much easier.
Mel , and Gary, Great to see you working on your home. I know that you both will be so glad when it's finished. Stay Safe sending my love and God's blessings to you all, Wanda In Ok Yeah, I'm so happy for you, it 's came together, Nothing is ever as bad as we think it will be , .such love, Wanda watching weather,We're under tornado Warnings, it sure is nasty out there. You 'll all stay safe
There is an option to notching. Just add a support board the length of the post, to the post. But I'm not complaining. I had to remove my beautiful resin posts and fence sections and take out the lagged galvanized posts hidden inside so that I could gut the framing. Then reframe and reinsert psots and fence sections. It isn't fun but it goes easy when you don't have to measure so much.
@Simple Life Reclaimed MeL and Gary Did you feel our push lol it's like Ninja Warrior 🪖 We are running 💨🎽 the gauntlet trying to jump flying squirrel 🐿️ to squirrel 🐿️ lol fun course years ago. Like season 9 . Exercise fascinates me I can watch it for hours. By the way, MeL I think a floating pier would be a great idea for those barrels . I am sure Mike of MT Homestead has more of those blue barrels. Cut lengthwise would work for Feed or water baths for the rest of the animals . Birds baths Last year the ponds in Trophy Club,TX were way too hot for the goslings and ducks .
I’m praying that everything comes together for you in the building of your deck and asking God to take care of you up there on your deck and staying safe while working together love you guys
Progress, progress, progress! You two are moving right along, making great strides building your cabin! I love the way you work so well together! The build is looking amazing!♥️😊
I have commented before about buying a collection of bar clamps, sash clamps, g clamps and f clamps as they are really worth the cost in safety on such building jobs. I built solo and had to work out a systematic method to my build, clamps saved me many times. My then wife couldn’t lift the weights but could do up clamps when I needed help. It saved her any real injuries too. Also block and tackle, 3:1 ratio was easy to use and just enough to do most of the work. I have used ropes and ratchet straps too. The interesting part of building on a tight arse budget is how you problem solve the challenges with what you have. I used ratchet straps to raise a 10x3 beam on first floor veranda posts. It was slow but methodical and most of all safe, no muscle strains. I love Gary, Mel and their family as well as Ant, Rox and their boy. Wonderful to watch and thanks guys for sharing.
take your tape and hook it on one side then move the other end to an even number like 6, then put a mark at 3 for the exact center. make sure you measure from the same side of the tape.
The easiest way to find the center of a board, without fractions, is to put the tab (0) against one side, and move the tape diagonally to an easy number to divide…like for a 6” wide board, line up the 8” mark of the tape on the other side of the board, and pencil mark it at 4”…that will be the center of the board. 👍🏻
Hi from Ontario. Your doing an awesome job on the deck, love the way you both work together. I think those barrels would make a great floating dock for the pond. Looking forward to hearing what they will be used for.
I want to say those blue barrels are going to be for the animals to collect water and automatically give out the water, especially if you did a raised barrel say at the rabbits, some piping down the run with the little ball attachments at each cage, each rabbit could go and drink whenever they wanted
Scarlett wants to become barrel racer and you’re gonna need a horse barn and some pasture fence down so get to it Gary ❤ and yes, I will help. I’m not too far from here. Love you guys
Hi gary and mal.just a tip that might make things easier for you both.why not do the decking first then you can use your 2 scaffold towers up there will be big help tying roof rafters into cabin roof also work bench for cutting all your timbers up there. Maybe bringing timber through the double doors then leave all your electrical tools in the cabin .much easier than up and down all the time.take care both of you.😅
Rain water catchment system. I had hoped getting floor on the deck was next for yall. I know its all baby steps & doing what is necessary first so yall can keep going so can get the roofing started. I just freak out FOR yall while yall are walking around on the 'planks'. Lol.
Barrels cut in half long ways and used as feeding troughs for your new goats. Speaking about goats. TH-camRS Blue Cactus Dairy Goats just bought 7 acres in North Arkansas (reminds me of where Jen and Wiley and Bobblehead just bought) Crystal and Derrick (mom and dad) and Darren and Emily (kids/teens) are their names and I'm betting they would fit into the framily pretty good. Crystal makes goat soap. And they Show their goats. (Babies should be popping out right about now) but I thought maybe if you do eventually want goats Crystal can teach the kids how to show goats or you and Roxane how to make soap (or maybe ya'll could work a trade where you milk yours, give her the milk and she'll give you soap? I hope ya'll reach out to them.
before you take them down, why not use a block of wood and a clamp under each bearer ,this will save you trying to reach up to the right level. (ex uk carpenter)
You are going to have the most awesome View from the deck to see the other mountains. No more putting off. hey once it is done it is done. You both were right., last Boaard was the Best one LOL

Great Job, looking great. Can you use a scrap piece of 2” x 6” and fasten on the post under the horizontal boards. You can use it as a cutting guide when you take the posts down to notch them. Leave it in place when you put the posts back up and you’ll have a resting place for the boards until to secure everything, then you can remove the scrap piece. Just a thought. 🥰

I’m not the first to guess about the barrels I’m sure, but I’m sure it’s for a floating ramp in the centre of the pond. Always a nice addition for a swim in the summer.
My guess is using the blue barrels for flotation to a fishing/swimming platform on your pond. Why not put that heavy post into the back of the truck then back the truck to where you need. It puts you higher to lift the pole up. Me southern AZ.

A floating pier for the pond or a floating platform for the middle of the pond to swim out to. The barrels are perfect for those ideas.
You stole my idea😊
@@CarolynPatrick65 mine too!
An aerator in the pond will keep the pond fresh.
I was gonna say this too. Glad I saw this comment before I posted. 😂
Great job Mel & Gary! You both still take my breath away watching you building up high with heavy boards!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Most likely a dock. Here it would be used for rainwater. Looking good. Get the deck down Gary so Mel can help better,LOL
Rain water catchments for watering the garden, or watering the hens house/rabbits, thus saving on the water you need to pump from the well
Rain water catch system for future irrigation or washing biggy or watering up the animals
Gary & Mel, you two rock can't wait to see the ends results my guess is for the dock for the pond❤️🇨🇦
Rainwater catchment for the garden the rabbits and the chickens Oh, and the dogs.

Rain buckets to keep the garden watered
Use a ratchet strap to pull the uprights into position. Maybe put blocks on the bottom line for the ridge planks? Saves holding it up.

As I'm sitting here watching this, I found myself pushing against my table trying to help push the top of the pillar over to where it needed to be. 😁

Gary, keep that old piece of you know what for a cement form when you want to pour a pad in front of your garage that you are going to build! Eddie
Maybe you will be making the barrels into a bucking barrel or a floating platform for the pond. Feed barrels could also work.
Nice Teamwork!🙂
I want to say those blue barrels are going to be for the animals to collect water and automatically give out the water, especially if you did a raised barrel say at the rabbits, some piping down the run with the little ball attachments at each cage, each rabbit could go and drink whenever they wanted
that idea beats mine . . . thought they were blue dens attached to the back of each rabbit hut for the female to have her baby bunnies.

A catch all at each corner of the house to catch water is my thought.

Barrels used as float in the pond to fish more in the middle of the pond and for kids to have a jump off while swimming.

Try using a clamp to hold timber up in general position, then just knock it into place then screw.
If you screw a temporary block below where the two boards meet, it will be a ledge to set the board on and take the weight off.
Floating dock for the pond. ❤❤
So glad you are a BUILD CHANNEL! Love it! HAHAHA! Love you guys,
Great job.Guys, I am impressed you.Just stay safe up there on that deck.

you will want to skirt each post with cross rafters around the deck level so you have full contact with the deck boards around the posts.

I think the blue barrels are to make a slide for the kiddos for their play structure or to use as part of the safety structure for their ladder!
