Welcome back to a new Timelapse video.
This time it is my largest 'Trachycarpus princeps' in the garden..
Sown in 2010, planted out at the beginning of 2015, so now (2024) already 9,5 years in open ground @ Belgium. (Zone 8b) and a total of 14 years old...
Enjoy the video and the nice growth of this beautiful Palm.

@@arjangilera Een beetje tussenin de twee, niet zo stug als T. wagnerianus, maar ook niet zo flexibeler als T. fortunei. Maar er zijn altijd onderling wel wat verschillen/variaties hoor. De ééne zal iets stugger zijn dan de andere...
Het is sowieso de mooiste en meest gewilde Trachycarpus.
Leuk om te horen dat je ervan geniet, dat apprecieer ik zeker.😊

Hi Dimi, I’m trying to decide whether to get a pure Princeps or a Waggie x Princeps. Which would you choose if you could only pick one?
If I could only choose one, I would definitely go for the pure Trachycarpus princeps. It is much more beautiful.
We all want a T. wagnerianus with white underside leaves. But I have already noticed that every hybrid of princeps with wagnerianus is always a regular Trachycarpus with white underside leaves. I never see much wagnerianus in them. And they are also not as white as the pure princeps.
I have both T. wagnerianus x princeps, as well as T. princeps x wagnerianus. Both crosses show little or no wagnerianus unfortunately. 🤷♂️
How did you get it to give you pure princeps seeds? Did you have access to a male princeps? Or did flowers turn out to be hermaphrodite That season?
At the end of the video I explain this. At minute 14:53 you can read that I got pollen from a friend with a male princeps. With that I pollinated my female princeps in 2023. 😊👍

Thank you for this video! Based on all your years of experience, what's the hardiness in Celsius of this T. Princeps? I'm thinking of planting one in eastern France; our climates are likely quite similar. Have you often protected it during winter?

Don't hesitate, this is comparable to T. wagnerianus in terms of frost resistance. As you can see in the video, I only minimally protected it a few times. Especially when they are small, they are a bit more sensitive. But that applies to all palms, Trachycarpus fortunei is also sensitive when it is still small. Now with a good trunk like this one in the video, the damage will start around -10°C I estimate...

Habe auch vor so eine Pflanze bei mir im Garten zu Pflanzen und was für eine Bodenmischung du genommen hast.

Dieser Trachycarpus Princeps ist sehr frostbeständig. Sehr ähnlich zu T. Fortunei. Vielleicht etwas empfindlicher, wie T. wagnerianus.
Wenn sie klein sind, schützt man sie am besten trotzdem vor starkem Frost und Nässe. Aber sobald sie einen guten Stamm haben, können sie Frost gut überstehen.
Wie Sie im Video sehen können, habe ich es fast nie geschützt. Es verträgt -10°C. Wenn es im Winter auch noch Sonne abbekommt, macht das einen großen Unterschied👍
Am Boden habe ich übrigens nichts Besonderes gemacht...
Hoi, ten eerste wat een te gekke tuin!! ik ben van plan een poging te wagen met de Phoenix Canariensis in volle grond. Nu ligt onze tuin aan een veld, en vroeg ik me af wat ik het beste als grond kan gaan gebruiken om de palm in te plaatsten ? Heb het idee dat er best veel vocht in onder de grond blijft zitten. Alle tips zijn welkom 😃

De grond is het best goed luchtig en voedzaam. Vocht is goed want deze palm drinkt graag veel water tijdens het seizoen. Maar tijdens de winter is vocht voor alle palmen net de grootste vijand, daarom dus goed droog houden & beschermen 👍
Met een hok lukt dat het beste en heb je meer controle, al begrijp ik dat niet iedereen zo gek is als mij 😇
Tips: Focus je vooral op het goed beschermen van de palm & ervoor zorgen dat de palm zoveel mogelijk bladeren vasthoud. Zo wordt de palm mooier, sterker, gezonder & dikker. Nooit groene bladeren snoeien, een keer is geen drama, maar hoe meer bladeren hoe beter. Palmen leven & creëren energie via de bladeren. Geef de Phoenix ook voldoende ruimte want die wordt gigantisch.
Kijk ook zeker deze video van mij een keer, dan zie hoe ik die bescherm en hoe groot die kan worden... Succes 😊

Dag Dimi, zeer populaire palm zeg je maar ik heb hem nog nergens te koop zien staan, waar kan ik een exemplaar op de kop tikken. Ik wil er graag één kopen.
Is het mogelijk dat al die verschillende soorten trachycarpus meestal altijd aangeboden worden als trachycarpus fortunei.
Ik merk veel verschil in steellengte van de bladeren bvb (maar ook in de stugheid van de bladeren zelf) onder als trachycarpus fortunei aangeboden palmen , volgens mij gaat het dan over verschillende soorten trachycarpussen die allemaal als fortunei verkocht worden. Wat denk jij ?
Dag Dimi, inmiddels heb ik wat op het internet gezocht naar een princeps en heb hier bij mij in de buurt een gespecialiseerde aanbieder gevonden die er naar eigen zeggen te koop heeft.
Het is enkel op afspraak maar ik ga hem zeker checken. Bedankt voor je inspirerende video.

Het is net doordat die zo populair is en de zaden zeer moeilijk te bemachtigen zijn in zijn oorspronkelijke gebied, plus dat die ook nog eens traag groeit als zaailing enz... dat maakt dat deze palm inderdaad de dag van vandaag niet zo makkelijk meer te verkrijgen is. Bij Palmexpert.nl is die 100% zeker te verkrijgen, ik ben er onlangs nog geweest en daar staan hele mooie exemplaren. Maar verwacht je wel aan een dikke prijs, dat heb je nu eenmaal steeds bij populaire palmen...
Al die verschillen die jij daar opnoemt zijn gewoon wat variaties, dat heb je altijd bij alle palmsoorten een beetje. Komt ook door verschillende groeiomstandigheden enz... Het zijn dus allemaal gewoon Trachycarpus fortunei hoor. Lange bladstelen komt gewoon door te weinig licht, de palm wil meer licht vinden door de bladeren meer naar het licht te laten groeien...

I can guarantee you 100% that this is definitely Trachycarpus princeps and certainly not Trachycarpus wagnerianus.
I sowed these myself, bought the seed directly from China from the well-known seller. And the typical characteristics are also clearly present, such as the very silver underside of the leaf, the blue and light green color of the leaves, the white and very present tomentum, the firm, thick typical princeps hair, slow growth, etc...

It is not a waggie. Waggy fronds are small , no more than 2 ft across on long petioles when adults. Princeps and the waggies do have similar "bonsai" appearances when young.
