- This would’ve been a first. The seal bull was calm and allowed Naude to get very close but not close enough to cut the entanglement. Although the seals at the docks are used to humans and don’t consider us a threat, we can’t predict their movements. Therefore, Naude couldn’t risk getting bitten and instead had to fetch the rescue hook. This shows us how peaceful and innocent these animals are.

WOW, that was suspensful! The bull seemed used to humans being around, and probably fed by them. Thankfully all was calm and drama free, and now the bull will live another day!

They do enjoy resting on those tarps. Is that what they are. Im sure my nautical terminology is wrong. Unusual that bulls let you get that close. Most cape fur seals are gregarious, though. Maybe a patient that OCN treated earlier.

It is a purse net, and seals like to rest on it because it is clean and scratches better than the sand.

Maybe 2024 is the year of the relaxed rescue?! Maybe the seals were only running because they were being chased, so now the guys can just walk up and snip the straps without any complaints! Maybe not.

I was afraid after reading the title and seeing you with just the scissors. Very relieved when it said "Two hours later". You gotta be careful, Naude!! It's dangerous enough with backup and nets to catch them in. But to go to BULL CENTRAL with a pair of scissors? That is asking for an attack. Thank Heaven you reconsidered.

We should never forget that Cape Fur Seals are the apex predators in the coastal waters of Namibia where Great Whites are very rare.
Seals can bite like a lion. A calm seal can get spooked within a second, instantly feeling forced to fight for survival. Befriending a seal is close to impossible. They don't have friendships with other seals. They are a group of individuals, grouping together for survival and not for love. They don't appreciate physical contact to each other and stop cuddling in their early youth. You can clearly see it in those individuals who understand that they get help. They know the rescuer is no danger to them and they still prefer being at least one body length away.
Reminds me of all those dog chiropractic videos on TH-cam shorts, where the dog looks uncertain but then suddenly relieved when he realizes he instantly feels better. Now this seal can get back to his heavy sleep schedule. 😁
