I remember not going to this! I was six years old at the time, my father and his friends went and I found out where they had been when they arrived home in the evening. I was a very disappointed little boy!
I was there too. I don't remember it all - I was just five at the time. But the traffic jam left us stuck out on rural roads for some time. I recall the Valliant of course. It stood out - so different from all other aircraft. Perhaps it is the origin of my interest in planes.
My family decided to attend this event,as Father was in the R N Z A F in WW II, he was demobbed in 1949. We got stuck in a traffic jam on the Himatangi straight, we sat still for hours, some people decided to walk, and they got to the gates before us. They must have walked all of 5 to10 miles...
This is an old Documentary made by Members of the "Wellington Amateur Cine Club" in1958! It was saved by me in time before it got lost for ever, after the Club, of which I was a member, seized to exist in the early 90ies. Other than adding Music & background sound and extra Titles, I have left the film in its original condition. It must have been an amazing Day, 30'000 cars converged at Ohakea and and created then NZ's first real traffic Jam.A Crowd of over 120'000 visited the "21. Anniversary Celebration of the NZ Airforce".
