    I just bought a 2024 Maverick XLT ecoboost last week, and the dealership I bought from told me every 5k miles was their recommendation, so at least some dealers are aware that they need oil changes slightly more frequently

    I have the dealer change my maverick xlt hybrid every 5000 miles and got them to use full synthetic 0w20 oil.0w20 is what the manufacturer recommends. That's if the dealers is really putting in 100% full synthetic oil who really knows! Thanks for the video.

      0w20 to my knowledge (and 0w16 for some manufacturers) are all fully synthetic. I dont think conventional oil can be 0w by its nature. If it can, I've never seen it.

    Good video! My 23 hybrid XLT, should be here this week. Talk to my salesman today, he said the truck is in the Twin Cities now, I live about 145 miles away. On the first oil change, I may change it around 1,500 miles. In case of any metal clippings etc. Probably change oil around 4000 miles or so after that. When I bought my 1976 Mercury Cougar brand new, I always changed oil myself, every 3000 miles. I used Mobil 10-30 oil. I still have the car, 47 years later, and it still runs like new, 351 Windsor v8. 86,000 miles on the car now. Anyway changing oil on time or even before, will prolong the engine life. I use Napa or Wick oil filters when I can. Cheers!

      You don't have the issue the eco boost has. I wouldn't say there is any need to change it that often. Not to mention that your electric motor is doing many of those miles as well.

    I have the Edge 2.0 ecoboost and I turn off the auto start/stop most of the time. I'm thinking there might be a little oil starvation at a stop light going from off to acceleration boost. I also try to idle the car before shutting it off to allow for spool down and cool down. I know, maybe old school turbo cars but it make me feel like I helping it last.

    I work at a Ford engine plant, I work in the area where the oil filters are installed. We use an electric tool that tightens the oil filter to a preset spec. I’ve told our engineer countless times that the oil filter doesn’t need to be that tight but they don’t listen. Ford wants to insure that they are not the reason the oil filter leaks once the car leaves the factory.

      Good rule of thumb for tightening an oil filter that I was taught by my older bro who was a professional mechanic for many decades is put a light film of oil on the gasket, then tighten the filter by hand and once you achieve gasket contact, then further tighten the filter down another 3/4's of a turn. This is plenty tight enough to keep the filter on but not so tight that you will have to fight it to get it back off later. Also, I now buy filter wrenches for the filters on all my vehicles, makes the job just a bit easier.

    I had my fist oil change yesterday at the dealer . At 4,000 Kilometers or 2,400 miles . The dealer put me on a program of every 4 months or 8,000 kilometers ,that's 4,800 miles . So the dealer must realize it needs changing more often . The oil changes are included as part of the purchase for the first year . After that I will do it myself .

    I changed at 2.5k , 12k, and 20k so far. I may start doing closer to 5k now.

    I did a 5000-mile change in May and did oil analysis, and I was shocked to find 4% of fuel dilution. There was no indication of any injector not working properly and it was recommended by the lab to resample at half the interval. I just drained at 2700 miles and waiting for the results. I do a lot of short trips and have read this can cause that issue with DI engines.

    You said you had "a" set of wheel ramps that you were using to make removing the skid plate easier. I get that, it makes sense. My question is about draining the oil while the front end is higher than the rear. Wouldn't it be better to drain the oil when the vehicle was level and the front end "not" on the ramps? I don't know is why I'm asking. I hope you do get 10+ yrs out of this Maverick. I would buy one if they offered a small cab with a 6' bed option. The ability to put a camper shell on a 6' bed for camping is a must for me. Thanks for sharing and best of luck with your sweet looking Maverick.

      The ramps actually tilt the back of the oil pan toward the ground. So you'll get even better drainage on the ramps than you would on level ground.

    I would give some advice. When you are putting that front piece back on do not use a power tool! They strip out very easily.

    Turbo engine should have this sn on the back of the oil container or sn plus located on the circle specks of the oil product.The twin turbo car I drive is vary specific on the oil specks.

    I changed my oil at 1k miles and plan to change every 4k because it’s cheap insurance. When you drain the oil you can smell the fuel in it on these ecoboost motors. Not my first one. 🙏🏻👍🏻

      yep; I smelled fuel every time I changed my oil at 4k (I did my first oil change at 1k). I traded my Mav in on my Bronco w/the 2.7 twin turbo. Already changed my oil twice with Mobil-1 5w30.

      The gas smell in the oil is totally normal. One drop of gas makes the entire crankcase smell. It doesn’t mean the oil needs changed. Toyota, Ford, Honda, etc. all have oil that smells like gas after a few thousand miles.

    You should always put oil in the oil filter before putting it on. That way when starting it up after oil change it doesn’t have run through the filter it’s already got the oil in it. My Dad taught me that.

      I do that now but honestly I'm not sure it's critical. The professional oil change places don't do it and I believe there is a bypass to ensure sufficient oil can flow to the engine at all times

      @@themaverickhntr Those "professional" oil change places mostly don't give a s**t. If you don't specify, you won't get synthetic; they will likely use the cheapest oil they have that matches the weight on the filler cap. They will also push the cheap Fram oil filters, which are about the same as NO filter. The oil filter bypass? That is in the filter for the circumstance of a PLUGGED filter, which you would get from NOT changing the oil. It has nothing to do with an empty filter.
      As a retired professional mechanic, I can tell you that pre-filling the filter with new oil is always a good idea. Since your engine has a vertical mount with the opening up, it will get oil into the engine sooner.

      You are absolutely correct, never use a wrench to tighten an oil filter, hand tight only. Not two hands, just one.

    Informative video. One point I'd like to make is if you're doing it yourself, ALWAYS run the engine to circulate the oil through the engine and filter AND ALWAYS CHECK FOR LEAKS BEFORE INSTALLING SKID PLATES. (Note: No mention if there is a gasket or O-ring on the drain plug, and if there is a rubber or cork O-ring, then it should be replaced.
    Side note question: What make and size tires are on your truck and does it have a lift kit installed?

      I have not. I am not yet at 20,000 miles on my truck. Not sure what the recommendation is off hand. I actually would like to change the front and rear gear oil very soon.

    You only need to remove the large skid plate. I changed my oil on my maverick about 10 times before trading it in on my Bronco.

    What’s a good way to document and show changing the oil every 5k miles yourself so you save $$$ on the dealership doing it, but being able to clearly show that you really did change it?

      Save your receipts showing you bought the oil and filters. With my truck I can also log the oil changes right in the vehicle service history on the Ford Pass app.

    it's supposedly better for your engine if you prefill the oil filter w/ oil before installing it... this way the engine components gets oil to it sooner.. probably more important in colder environments but still it's good practice

      The fuel.pump definitely sounds like a sewing machine but that's just the way it is. I can't say I notice any difference summer vs. winter.

    How does the warranty work if you change oil yourself, how do you prove it was changed, if you have an engine failure?

      You just log the work and save your receipts for the oil and filter. If you use the Ford Pass app, you can even take photos of the receipts and upload them to your vehicle's official service history. Bottom line, you are allowed by law to work on your own vehicle. Ford can't void your warranty as long as you can prove you performed routine maintenance at or before factory-recommended intervals.

      Amsoil is a warranty secure product and also offers warranties on their products. A warranty claim on this oil is unheard of.

    What are those headlight covers? Do they not degrade lighting?

      The top of the light is not operational on XL or XLT trims. In the Lariat there is a signature LED lighting up there. It's just black vinyl wrap and it doesn't reduce lighting at all in my truck.

    A good idea is to prime the oil filter before installing it. You installed it dry which is not good for the life of the bearings.

    My Maverick is getting a Castrol Magnatec oil change with either a wix or Motorcraft filter. I seen on another oil change video here on TH-cam that some people are using the FL 400s over top of the fl910s, what's your guys's thoughts on doing that?

    Does the oil pan drain plug have any sort if gasket on it that would need to be changed?

      There is a blue O-Ring on the back. I highly doubt it would need to be changed with any regularity, but I am also sure you could buy a pile of replacement seals for next to nothing. Honestly with the plus screwed all the way, there is probably over an inch of thread engagement. Very hard to imagine any oil escaping with or without the rubber seal. Feel free to research Ford's recommendation on replacement of that seal and let me know. As far as I could tell, it was good as new.

    I change my oil in my 2007 Tundra around once every 2 years, truck runs great & never needed to repair anything but the alternator once. 6 cylinder

      @@themaverickhntr Ford made the oil filter and drain plug nice and accessible once the shields are removed. If you live in an area where they salt/sand the roads in the winter due to snow and ice, better make sure you have a good, annual rust preventative (like Rust Check or Krown) sprayed on the underside.

    Ford recommends the blend because the VCT cam screens clog up if you use 100% synthetic and take short trips & engine isnt always fully hot the synthetic will start to get the crust in it.

      Sound like you need to find another dealer. They will recommend blend on the oil change because they make more money on it. Your information about blend VS synthetic oil is precisely backwards.

    You Maverick guys do know this engine has been used since 2015 in a wide range of vehicles. The fact it is in a “truck” makes no difference in how it should be treated. Yeah, 5k miles is good. Bearing failure in the turbo is rare. Frequent oil changes do nothing to reduce intake valve buildup. Need 2 catch cans. Is that really a skid plate? Looks like it would rip right out if you hat anything with it.

      The manufacturer and their recommendations have only one concern...which is for the powertrain warranty period to last without any cost to them. If your ok with that, then by all means keep following the 10K protocol.

      Well, not the end of the world. That leaves you half a quart to monitor oil level between changes and add a little if needed. If not, that's your half quart for next time if you only want to buy 5 quarts.

Most oil change places nowadays have computers that automatically look up factory spec for whatever vehicle they have on the rack. And, they don't buy oil by the quart. They buy it by the barrel and fill your engine with a hose hooked to a giant tank. They'll put 5.5 quarts in and charge you for the extra half quart.

    Scotty kilmer channel says these twin turbos and the hybrid engines from Ford on these are junk since they're new and haven't been tested! Plus that the cost of repairing these down the road will not be cheap because the hard to work on! Oh yeah another big reason cuz they're being built in Mexico 😂 another American truck that will only lasts a 100,000 if you're lucky and I drive heavy-duty trucks Ford & Chevy for a big utility and their junk after 125,000 miles and that's not including repairs and maintenance keep it!

      Well first of all this isn't a twin turbo. It's a single. Second, this engine has been around for years and is pretty proven if properly maintained. Maverick us new but this power train is not. Third, Scotty Kilmer is an entertainer but let's not pretend his word is gospel.

    7500 mile oil change intervals are completely crazy, will definitely sludge up your motor over time. Having owned and maintained my own vehicles for many decades, as I had worked as a professional auto mechanic for many years back in the day, I would agree wholeheartedly with this guy to use pure synthetic oil (my preference is Castrol Syntec, as it is more readily available at local big box stores, along with the Fram Synthetic Oil filter). I always do the first oil change at 2500 miles and use petroleum oil, then switch to pure synthetic at 5K miles, and then every 5K miles which is now really easy to keep track of (10k, 15K, 20K, etc.). Only correction I would note is to just loosen but not remove the rear two bolts for the large pan, as it is designed to slid off of and back on to those two rear bolts (notice the slots in the rear of the pan), that will make the job just a bit easier. Also, I would reinstall the bolts by hand and then be sure to adjust the torque setting on the driver when tightening the bolts, although I always do a final tightening by hand rather than rely on a tool that might under or over tighten the bolts.

      @@goldengate8287 Lots of youtube videos trying to tip Fram off of their pinnacle as the premier oil filter supplier, and lots of crap lies about them. Fram makes a whole bunch of different filters for various applications, I would choose the one that is designed for synthetic oil.

    Any gasoline turbocharged engine requires more frequent oil changes. Synthetic oil is much better too.

      These modern turbo engines don’t run a lot of boost and the engines are lower compression. The problem is people use Dino oil or don’t change it often enough. They really aren’t any harder on the oil than a port injected NA engine.

    I picked up a 2022 XLT 4K, FX4, LUX with 12.6K a little under 2 months ago. According to the app, it had it's first oil change at 5.5K, another at around 11K and Carmax showed me records that they changed it right before I bought it at 12.6K. Knowing this, I still had it changed at 15K miles and just had it changed last weekend at 20K miles (I drive a ton for work and us it to pull our 21 foot camper). Also, off topic, I plan on doing a walnut blasting every 60K miles, along with changing out the spark plugs at 50K miles.

      @@Bagel_Biscuit 4K lbs, however, it got totaled about 3 months ago from a hit/run driver. Picked up a 2018 1500 Silverado as it's replacement which can tow about 10.5K lbs. Last summer, I did place an order for a 2024 XLT, LUX, 4K tow package, moonroof for $1K UNDER MSRP. Should be delivered by next month, however, not sure if I want to add a 5th vehicle to my stable or risk divorce.

    AMSOIL is the best... but it comes at a price :) agree with you we have to do change oil&filter every 2x the recommended factory interval. My interval is 15k kms, I plan to do oil change every 7.5k kms. Cheers!

    I"m in FL. I don't put the felt plate back on. I can change it quick without ramps. 50k miles on a 2022. Superteck full synth. Hybrid.

    Sure the dealer wants you to follow their oil schedule of 7500 miles. It wears out 2 1/2 times quicker. 3000 miles regardless what they say.

    Thank you for the comprehensive oil video. Are you on MTC Forum? How often should we be changing the transmission fluid and other fluids?

      Yes, I am on the forum. Not sure about tranny and diff fluids, but I am sure doing them a fair bit ahead of Ford's recommended interval isn't a bad idea.

    Thanks for the video! Nice job! If I can add a suggestion. Remove the fill cap and dip stick first. Then when you pull the drain plug and filter, you will get a smoother and more complete drain.

    I used motor craft 5 20 in my New Ford Taurus DOHC V6 Change oil every 3500 miles Car had 250 thousand on it when I sold it to buy my Maverick Truck. My 2.0 will run that same with 93 octan gas i had 250000 0n fuel pump also using Sunoco gas

    I think you should also disable the start stop feature on the engine. After hard driving turbos are hot and the engine will shut off when you stop. So no oil flow to bearings in turbo. Same is true on diesel engines dont turn them off right after hard driving. Example highway trip stopping for gas at an exit give the engine time to "cool" off before shutting it off.

    Important!! Make sure your synthetic atf is ULTRA LOW VISCOSITY- only two vendors for that spec - motorcraft and valvonine. Check 8f35 service manual

      Actually, I did the whole oil change in my Wildlife Research Center T-Shirt. But after I started editing, I realized I really needed a better, shorter, to-the-point summary than what I had recorded previously. So, I went out on a different day to shoot that with my Ford Performance T-Shirt. Funny thing is, I only have two Ford T-Shirts, but I do wear them a lot when I am making Maverick videos!

    Did you mod anything with your Eibach spring level kit with 245/70/17 tires to fit in-front? Does the front tires rub the struts?

      No mods. Just remove OEM springs and install Eibach springs and camber bolts. Tires fit fine.

      Yes, I reset the oil life meter. I also log the oil changes in the vehicle service history in The Ford Pass app. So, I can always refer back to that for the exact mileage and date I last changed the oil.

    Glad I bought a hybrid Mav. Getting 50 mpg up to 65mpg on a good day. Change oil every 10-15k miles, brakes need to be changed half as often due to regen doing most the work. The 2.0 ecoboost leaks fuel into the oil like a manic plus the turbo, I’d do oil every 3k miles if I had that. Plus ford requires premium gas in the 2.0 or u void warranty

      Glad you are enjoying your truck! You do NOT void the warranty with regular gas on the turbo. Manual says 87 octane is OK, but premium is "recommended." Let's not spread disinformation.

      @@Flockingtheherd Ford also leads the world in recalls. So, they don't always get it right. Here is a DIRECT QUOTE from the owner's manual of my 2022 Ford Maverick XLT Ecoboost: "Your vehicle operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
      Some fuel stations, particularly those in
      high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as
      regular unleaded gasoline with an octane
      rating below 87. The use of these fuels
      could result in engine damage that will not
      be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
      For best overall vehicle and engine
      performance, premium fuel with an octane
      rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The
      performance gained by using premium fuel
      is most noticeable in hot weather as well
      as other conditions, for example when
      towing a trailer. See Towing a Trailer
      (page 263)."

    I have a 2024 Mav XLT FX4 and plan to change every 5k miles. I did that with my 2012 Focus I bought new and it's still going strong with no mechanical issues after 200K miles.

    Great video! Have you considered installing a catch can? Hearing a lot of people recommending installing one to help prevent carbon build up in the engine but not fully convinced if necessary.

      I have considered it. I'm sure it can't hurt. Might help. But I do believe using a very high quality synthetic oil and changing often lessens the need.
      If I was going to do it, I'd probably go with a dual can setup and have one on each sides. I mean if you're going to go through the trouble why not go all in and capture all that gunk?

      I installed both. The crank vent actually does collect. Maybe a few tablespoons ever 6k miles or so. Certainly not hurting.

      It's really funny to hear about catch cans on new cars. Back in 1968, when I was licensed for car pollution control, engine crankcases used to vent to the outside air. Among the first aftermarket PVC crankcase venting systems we installed back then used catch cans. Installing a system on one of those open-air motors could get you a quart of sludge in a few weeks, until the inside of the motor got clean.

    I’ve heard numerous automotive engineers stating the recommended intervals are for warranty and a minimum. They all state if you want it to last change oil more frequently.
    In fact, at one dealership I worked at I seen a customer get a new engine despite being out of warranty simply because they did just that, changed their oil more often than recommended.
    I have a Maverick too and change oil every 4k, starting at 1k with full synthetic Pennzoil Platinum.

    I change my oil when my oil life measures 10% oil life left. I use a full synthetic 5w 30 high quality oil, Motorcraft filter and Prolong Engine Treatment friction modifier

    Put the truck up on ramps to take off the skid plate. Then back off to level truck to drain oil and remove filter. After your done drive back up to put plate back on

      I think it drains fine on the ramps. It actually pushes the oil to the back of the pan where the plug is.

    You should have filled the filter before you put it 9n to avoid dry start. In the vertical for your filter this is easy just my thought

      Yes, I thought of that after the fact. However, isn't there a "bypass" for oil supply to the engine too? In other words, not all the oil that lubricates the engine comes directly through the filter. It all circulates through the filter repeatedly, but there is still a way to ensure the engine gets the oil it needs. Perhaps someone with real mechanical knowledge of the 2.0EB can comment on this.

    Next to Amsoil, Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum is an excellent oil. Top notch product and more affordable.

    This is why mfrs should NOT put turbos on consumer/appliance grade vehicles.
    Its A Turbo Engine!!!! You need to follow TURBO oil change intervals! That means Full Synthetic. That means 3k - 4k intervals (unless you have it analyzed to be sure the oil isn't coking up). AND does the engine run for an additional 30-60 seconds after you "turn it off" after you've ran it hard and immediately park it? If not, I'd ask about that. Turbos NEED turbo timers to keep the engine running (and the oil flowing) for a bit to cool down the turbo or you will cook the oil in the turbo. This was a HIGH failure issue back in the 80s when mfrs first tried using turbos on non-enthusiast cars.

    I (my company) has two hybrids. I don't reinstall the shield. (All street driving in the south)
    Can reach the drain plug and filter easily with no ramps. Goes real fast.
    Walmart's Supertech 5-20 full synthetic every 5k miles.

    You are wrong about Ford because they care about their customers. Every car company recommends to change oil every 7,000 miles. Please don’t insult Ford? I have owned Ford vehicles for years and never once I have issues. I keep up with maintenance. You should use motorcraft oil and motorcraft oil filter.

      I never said Ford doesn't care about customers -- though if you are a Maverick customer it's certainly debatable. I said that Ford -- and ALL auto makers, for that matter -- don't much care about product failures outside the warranty period. If you don't think parts and service are the lifeblood of the auto industry and how the auto makers are able to sustain dealer networks then you don't understand the economics of the automobile industry. If they made vehicles that lasted forever they'd all be out of business.
