There is an app you can download on your phone. It is called parking mobility and if you follow the directions you can actually report handicapped parking violators and they receive a ticket in the mail.

Growing up I knew a kid who was in a wheelchair. He was with his mom at the PX and someone had a Mercedes parked diagonally across two spots. His mom had to drop him off at the curb. While she went to park in a regular spot he wheeled himself to the Mercedes and he yanked the Hood ornament.

A bunch of cyclists parked their bikes in the last disabled spot at a garden centre and chained them to a post so they couldn't be moved. When they came out forty minutes later they found every singe tyre was flat. After trying to pump them up they realised that they had been punctured. (I wonder what the cost of replacing 16 tyres was?) Surprisingly nobody saw anything, all they got was "well you shouldn't have parked there !"
Thanks. I am now confined to a mobility chair. Without Handicap access I would be home bound . Thanks to the generous support of Handicap Access by businesses and government getting anywhere is possible. Most people honor the parking spots and I thank them.
It is so good to see someone who actually cares I see so many people who parks in disabled parking and don’t have tags. It’s mostly people with nice cars or doesn’t want to walk a little farther.
Once I saw a lady park in a handicapped spot and no sticker or placard. I confronted her and she tried the 'just for a minute' excuse. I told her that wouldn't do, and that if she didn't move I would block her in and call the cops. Quite a crowd had formed by then. She actually cried and asked why I was being so mean. People started saying "you can walk without trouble", "my grandma is disabled", " it's against the law!" I'm not proud but I think if regular people made it their business it would help. Places where selfishness and inconsiderate behavior is not socially acceptable are better places.

Thank you for your work patrolling the parking lots in Spokane! It's so frustrating when people use other people's disabled parking passes or park on the lines between disabled parking spots. We are always looking for a parking space with enough room next to it for the wheelchair ramp and the extra room necessary to maneuver my chair at the end of it. Even most disabled spots don't work unless they have those lines next to them.

I see cops parking in disable spots a lot, I always put a note on the front window saying I took a lovely photo of your car parked in a disable spot and sent it to the city and the news station .. have a nice day.

But we have a huge epidemic problem in the "disabled" community as well, since we allow fatasses to get disabled parking that was originally intended for the elderly and those in wheelchairs, when the obese should be required to park at the very back of the parking lot in order to get some much needed exercise.
I somewhat agree. Although $400 is still a very large fine. Last year I accidentally parked in an unmarked handicap spot and was cited $375. When your broke that’s a lot of money. It sucks because it was totally an accident and I should have/could have fought it. For those that do this on purpose I completely agree with a large fine. Just a heads up on the motorcycle thing, I’m disabled, iv got a disability badge, I also ride a motorcycle therefore I’m perfectly entitled to park in the disabled parking bay. Iv lost count of the amount of times people have tried to shame me for doing so. Do not just assume that a motorcycle is parking there illegally.

Education works sometimes. I had a classmate who was disabled and I saw what he went through to get in/out of his car with a folding wheelchair. Although I never parked in a handicapped space prior to that I did have a great appreciation for his determination. That’s one ticket I would never get
Finally! A city that gets it! I approached the Student Resource Officer at my son’s school about people illegally parking in disabled spots. I asked if I could take photos of the offending people and their vehicles. He said no because there’s nothing he could do unless he saw it for himself. He continued to say it just a misdemeanor. Really? Just a misdemeanor? The fine is supposed to act as a deterrent, unfortunately, I don’t believe that it’s working. In my opinion what needs to change is the law making it a felony to park in a disabled spot and allow citizens to capture proof and report to police.
I WORK AS A PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN DENVER. Yes, I'm one of those that tickets people for not feeding the meters. But I also cite people for misusing those handicap placards. I've heard every sob story and excuse in the book. "I only went into the Walmart for a minute". Ok, it'll only take me a minute to write you up. "But this is my grandmother's car. She didn't remove the placard" Placard or no, you have no right to use a handicap space dummy! "But I had to use the space. I'm in a huge hurry!" Well, you're going to be a few minutes late now. You could have saved time if you used a regular space! "But I didn't see the handicap marking on the pavement because it's covered with snow". There's a vertical sign also there that clearly marks this as a handicap space. Open your eyes! Perhaps the worst excuse I heard was the day after Trump was elected. A 20 something woman started crying, said "I'm sorry. I've been so upset about the election, I didn't have the strength to walk all the way from the regular spaces". My response: "Too bad snowflake". Handicap space violations carry a $420 fine. I don't have sympathy for selfish able bodied people using them. Hopefully this stiff fine will teach you a lesson!

I imagine you're obese from your name, job, and avatar. People shouldn't park in handicap spots and they should be jailed for 24 hours for doing so. A simple fine isn't enough. But handicap spots are also out of control in some areas, and nonexistent in others. Why does homedepot need 20 handicap spaces? What happens when their parking lot is full to the brim and not a single handicap space is in use? Why should a handicapped person be given a defacto personal parking space everywhere, despite normal people often not having a single legal place to park? The current handicap system is a problem, and the current mind set of the abled is also a problem. In my experience in Denver, women and negros tend to be the people abusing the handicapped spaces. Two "Victim" classes. The system is imperfect, and I don't have a solution. But pretending that there is never a reason for someone to park in a disabled spot is blind to the realities of the world.
Sure, some places do have an overabundance of handicapped parking spaces. But that's not up to me. City and state building codes are what mandate the number of spaces.

I'm confined to a wheelchair so I need a handicapped parking spot. What burns me is when I see someone take the last handicapped spot and nearly run into the store. Then I can't park!
Wish we had more enforcement officers here in the U.K. and higher instant fines. I have a steel and 4mm acrylic, blue badge holder which locks onto the steering wheel with a steel, plastic coated cable and high security lock. It’s police approved. Stolen badges go for up to £500. It’s a good deterrent.
I am physically disabled. I'm Canadian. The maximum fine is $5,000. But somehow people in general think they can use the parking spots designated for people with disabilities for a couple of minutes or they think they can just park there and sit in the car and wait. Of course they're not allowed to but they think they're above the law. I was in the strip ball ones I parked my vehicle no problem a police officer was giving tickets out he checked my wheelchair permit and I asked him why he says because people misuse these permits quite often he says wait till this guy gets back to me he said he went to go pick up his disabled mother this man will be getting the full fine because his mother was deceased and was not available
Carl, if I remember correctly, some places have 2 separate offenses relating to wrongfully parking in disabled parking spots. The first is simply parking in the disabled parking spot when you're not disabled. And the second is something like fraudulent use of a disabled parking placard. Last I heard, each offense was for around $900 in San Francisco, so if you get nailed for both offenses, you're looking at about $1800 in fines.
Just today I had someone giving me a hard time for parking in disabled spot. My plates are permanent disabled. Just because I don’t look disabled doesn’t mean people can judge. I hide my pain every day to inspire my children. Not for others to determine my needs.

We need officers like these, over here (UK). We get daffodils and snowdrops that look all very pretty, walking up and down the streets - If you ever see them! The offenders just keep on offending. Right outside the shops in town, one fast food delivery service seem to think that the disabled parking spaces are there for their own convenience, not that of the customers of theirs, or others' businesses.
We definitely definitely need more citation officers like that in California. cuz people block or take up the handicap parking space to go into a weed shop or to a store and not come out, so when this happens I park right behind them or they can't get out they have to wait till I get done I know it pisses them off but they have to learn a lesson they're not handicapped it shouldn't be there

I agree on the jail time. I think the second violation should include mandatory 30 days in jail. Every violation after that add another 30 days and double the fine each time.
What gets me is that they act like it no big deal "Oh just going in for a second" sometimes I'd like to see how they feel if they had to be in that position for a day or week. I say make fines at high as $1000.00 and if they use someone else's tag, take it and return it in a year from that date. If they don't need it then they can live without it for a year.
My nephew was crossing train tracks and was dragged by a passing train. He lost his left arm and leg and qualifies for a handicap placard. However, her refuses to use it because say's he's not handicapped. Just missing an arm and a leg. Now 31 years old today, he stands (on one leg) at 6ft 1". Lucky to be alive and full of spirit.
it happens all the time around here. i got checked one time since 2009 when i got mine. i didn't mind because they was doing their job. took less than 2 minutes. but i see it all the time people park get out crab a few kids and run into a store or something. i even know one girl that uses her mothers and renews it and that woman has been dead for 8 years i have even turned her in and nothing has ever been done. i am so glad to see this going on.
I never ever place my car on a disabled parking slot. I rather walk a lot than doing that. Why I do this? My father is in a chair. I know how much people struggle with this problem. There are many, many, many architectural barriers that makes the life of a handicapped a painful torture. This HAS to change.
It’s not about educating those offenders. They absolutely know what they are doing is wrong and illegal. In order to stop this action from happening should be easy, hire more people to site tickets and charge more for fines. Minimum of $750.00. Double it for the second offense, three times for the third offense and so on. If the driver is not the person the handicap placard was not given to, then charge that person to. They had to give them the placard. Hit them where it hurts, in their pockets.
I took a pic of a parking enforcement truck parked in the HC spot for at least an hour, stood there for a few minutes thinking he's just giving a ticket to someone, but he never came back, so after shopping (farmer's market day on Venice, Culver City) I figured he'd b gone, but it was still there
Similar issue when the entire fire dept takes the big rig to Walmart to shop for supplies for 3 hours while on the clock and takes 10 spots for the truck.

The problem here in the UK at shopping malls is, no one to enforce it. Private property as far as cops are concerned and the malls/supermarkets don't bother.

My mobility scooter comes out the back of my car, but I need the extra side space to open the door fully in order to get in & out. Not all spaces afford that extra room. A few local ones only give it on one side meaning I have to park facing the wrong way so that the ramp blocks the 'road'.
My abusive ex husband parked in the emergency ambulance entrance space at the hospital when I was in hospital having our second child, who came early and was on life support. We had to go home without her while I was waiting for a parent’s room to become available. It was the space the ambulance parked in to rush me to theatre when I was 8 months pregnant and haemorrhaging. When I (politely) asked him to move the car the acted like I was a cheeky woman with an attitude problem. His response to all of my logical requests. When a parent’s room became available I arranged a rental house and left him from the hospital. This entitlement was what be believed he was owed in every situation. He was a controlling, abusive b******. Moral of this story, how people park and drive is a true reflection of their character. Don’t ignore red flags like I did. Don’t believe like I did that you only deserve to be tolerated instead of celebrated. I’m still alone 9 years later age 37 but maybe I’ll find someone at some point.
I agree with Brett's stand on the actual space around or next to the vehicle. I am a paraplegic and a full-time wheelchair user and don't mind if the space is half a mile away as long as I can get next to my car. People leaving no space to get in or out is the problem, not how far away the space is from the venue
I sat near a chic-fil-a waiting for my daughter and watched 6 cars park in the 2 handicapped spots in front of the store to run in and grab their to-go orders. The parking for to-go is directly across the parking lot, maybe 50 ft away. The major were young adults, late teens/early 20s. Absolutely dismal to watch. No thought to anyone else.
In Southern Calif, I see a lot of very expensive low profile sports cars, Mercedes, Lexus, Corvettes, BMW, parked in these spots. Usually doctors or family/friends of doctors who get them to write whatever notes are necessary to get a placard.
When I broke my Femur and dislocated shoulder I was offered a handy cap parking tag, I declined it!! Id rather my 94 year old grand parents get that spot. Or your grand parents, VETS, etc. Yes it would have helped me, but I was younger and it was not needed for me. EVERY car parked Ill legally in a handy caped spot should be towed and a Ticket issued. Give respect to our elders and War Vets!!! RESPECT.

I recall one guy who had a placard due to having had a heart attack but spent his days flying model planes. He would take the closest spot to the restaurant at lunch time leaving a lady who could hardly walk to park far away quite often!

Before back surgery a few years ago, my wife had a disabled hang tag. She needed a close space, but not one with room for a wheelchair. Maybe we need two types of handicapped designations. One with a Wheelchair logo and the other with crossed crutches for those who can walk, but not far.
I have the same concerns that this gentleman has but I am quite a few years older. Over the years I have used techniquesnakes such as parking further away at the end of a row so I can't be blocked. I also have parked next to posts which sometimes works. If you don't need to be up front and close try other methods. Even a regular space might work if you park along the line on your right and that will increase your space on the driver's side. I drive a Tudor Monte Carlo and pull my wheelchair out of the back seat. I am a quadriplegic and it took a long time to figure this out but it works.
As an MSer with a placard, I rather not park in a handicap spot cause I know there are others who need it more. Plus, the longer I struggle to walk the less I will need the placard.

The three most common excuses: 1). I was in a hurry. 2). There was nowhere else to park. 3). I'm only going to be a minute. None of those entitles you to use that space. You're lucky you don't need it. But you might, one day: 85% of Americans will become disabled at some point, either permanently or temporarily. There are only two situations in which a police officer can cite you on private property, without permission of an owner: handicap parking violators, and parking at a fire lane.
We have a reason why we even keep disabled spots free when we do late night car meets free during late night car meets in our small town in Germany. There is actually a guy here in a Wheelchair who has a absolutely mad modified Opel vivaro. That thing is just lit. He made everything look cool even the lift and that thing is fast! (for a van) he got basically everything on it from a bigger turbo to a side pipe
I think there should be a number that any disabled person can call if someone is illegally parked in a disabled 🅿️ spot. It could connect to the police and a tow company with a contract. Maybe a number like, TOW- 869, or something easy to remember like 111.
I’d argue that these people already know the law about placard use and what the crosshatching is for. Violators just don’t care and unless enforced, they’ll just keep doing it.

Wrong...what it comes down to is not educating people, but enforcing stiff fines to those that get caught...there are no excuses for this violation...I envy the officer that is passing out these tickets... I wish I would have given that honor.
On a similar note , I carry around a tubeless tire valve stem and a Shrader valve remover ( available cheap at many auto parts stores ) Yes, I'm permanently disabled . The easiest thing to do is not even vandalism because nothing gets destroyed like the bicycle tire incident below. You quickly go to one side of the vehicle violating the handicapped spot and you use your tool to remove the Shrader valve that instantly deflates the tire and go to the diagonally opposite tire and deflate it too. Then the fun really begins. FIRST, you lay the removed Shrader valve right next to each tire so no charge of any kind can result in your arrest, Air is free, right? You call 911 and say that my handicapped spot is occupied by a violator and please send out a patrol car immediately. By this time the owner of this vehicle knows he/she/it has to call a tow truck to move the vehicle ASAP. a cop arrives and hiding a grin, writes that $400 ticket. That tow truck driver arrives at that point and can add a special surcharge for " rescuing a vehicle " from the handicapped spot. I'll bet that person never parks in another handicapped spot again...
Don't know what your blue disabled cards are like in the USA but in the UK along with the cards reference number there is always a photograph of the disabled person who was issued the card It seems that you don't do that in the USA at least if there was a photograph on your disabled blue cards the police or whatever could see if the person was in the car or not
I've found that a lot of people use someone else's placard. One man who parked in one wearing a tennis outfit threatened me when I asked if he was disabled. My moms the same way. Unless she or I feel particularly bad that day or there is no other spot at all we use a regular spot
A bunch of cyclists parked their bikes in the last disabled spot at a garden centre and chained them to a post so they couldn't be moved. When they came out forty minutes later they found every singe tyre was flat. After trying to pump them up they realised that they had been punctured. (I wonder what the cost of replacing 16 tyres was?) Surprisingly nobody saw anything, all they got was "well you shouldn't have parked there !"

It is so good to see someone who actually cares I see so many people who parks in disabled parking and don’t have tags. It’s mostly people with nice cars or doesn’t want to walk a little farther.
Once I saw a lady park in a handicapped spot and no sticker or placard. I confronted her and she tried the 'just for a minute' excuse. I told her that wouldn't do, and that if she didn't move I would block her in and call the cops. Quite a crowd had formed by then. She actually cried and asked why I was being so mean. People started saying "you can walk without trouble", "my grandma is disabled", " it's against the law!"
I'm not proud but I think if regular people made it their business it would help. Places where selfishness and inconsiderate behavior is not socially acceptable are better places.
Perfect, more people need to do that and shame these people so maybe they will think about somebody else next time...

Thank you for your work patrolling the parking lots in Spokane! It's so frustrating when people use other people's disabled parking passes or park on the lines between disabled parking spots. We are always looking for a parking space with enough room next to it for the wheelchair ramp and the extra room necessary to maneuver my chair at the end of it. Even most disabled spots don't work unless they have those lines next to them.

I see cops parking in disable spots a lot, I always put a note on the front window saying I took a lovely photo of your car parked in a disable spot and sent it to the city and the news station .. have a nice day.

But we have a huge epidemic problem in the "disabled" community as well, since we allow fatasses to get disabled parking that was originally intended for the elderly and those in wheelchairs, when the obese should be required to park at the very back of the parking lot in order to get some much needed exercise.

I somewhat agree. Although $400 is still a very large fine. Last year I accidentally parked in an unmarked handicap spot and was cited $375. When your broke that’s a lot of money. It sucks because it was totally an accident and I should have/could have fought it. For those that do this on purpose I completely agree with a large fine. Just a heads up on the motorcycle thing, I’m disabled, iv got a disability badge, I also ride a motorcycle therefore I’m perfectly entitled to park in the disabled parking bay. Iv lost count of the amount of times people have tried to shame me for doing so.

Education works sometimes. I had a classmate who was disabled and I saw what he went through to get in/out of his car with a folding wheelchair. Although I never parked in a handicapped space prior to that I did have a great appreciation for his determination. That’s one ticket I would never get
Finally! A city that gets it! I approached the Student Resource Officer at my son’s school about people illegally parking in disabled spots. I asked if I could take photos of the offending people and their vehicles. He said no because there’s nothing he could do unless he saw it for himself. He continued to say it just a misdemeanor. Really? Just a misdemeanor?
The fine is supposed to act as a deterrent, unfortunately, I don’t believe that it’s working. In my opinion what needs to change is the law making it a felony to park in a disabled spot and allow citizens to capture proof and report to police.
I WORK AS A PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN DENVER. Yes, I'm one of those that tickets people for not feeding the meters. But I also cite people for misusing those handicap placards. I've heard every sob story and excuse in the book. "I only went into the Walmart for a minute". Ok, it'll only take me a minute to write you up. "But this is my grandmother's car. She didn't remove the placard" Placard or no, you have no right to use a handicap space dummy! "But I had to use the space. I'm in a huge hurry!" Well, you're going to be a few minutes late now. You could have saved time if you used a regular space! "But I didn't see the handicap marking on the pavement because it's covered with snow". There's a vertical sign also there that clearly marks this as a handicap space. Open your eyes!
Perhaps the worst excuse I heard was the day after Trump was elected. A 20 something woman started crying, said "I'm sorry. I've been so upset about the election, I didn't have the strength to walk all the way from the regular spaces". My response: "Too bad snowflake".
Handicap space violations carry a $420 fine. I don't have sympathy for selfish able bodied people using them. Hopefully this stiff fine will teach you a lesson!
Yeah, but on the other hand, about 90% of the people that have valid handicap placards have them for obesity. What excuse do THEY have for not needing more exercise walking a few extra steps? "I'm already healthy" or "Sorry, the hamburger jumped in my mouth"?
I imagine you're obese from your name, job, and avatar. People shouldn't park in handicap spots and they should be jailed for 24 hours for doing so. A simple fine isn't enough. But handicap spots are also out of control in some areas, and nonexistent in others. Why does homedepot need 20 handicap spaces? What happens when their parking lot is full to the brim and not a single handicap space is in use? Why should a handicapped person be given a defacto personal parking space everywhere, despite normal people often not having a single legal place to park? The current handicap system is a problem, and the current mind set of the abled is also a problem. In my experience in Denver, women and negros tend to be the people abusing the handicapped spaces. Two "Victim" classes. The system is imperfect, and I don't have a solution. But pretending that there is never a reason for someone to park in a disabled spot is blind to the realities of the world.
Sure, some places do have an overabundance of handicapped parking spaces. But that's not up to me. City and state building codes are what mandate the number of spaces.

I'm confined to a wheelchair so I need a handicapped parking spot. What burns me is when I see someone take the last handicapped spot and nearly run into the store. Then I can't park!
Wish we had more enforcement officers here in the U.K. and higher instant fines. I have a steel and 4mm acrylic, blue badge holder which locks onto the steering wheel with a steel, plastic coated cable and high security lock. It’s police approved. Stolen badges go for up to £500. It’s a good deterrent.
I am physically disabled. I'm Canadian. The maximum fine is $5,000. But somehow people in general think they can use the parking spots designated for people with disabilities for a couple of minutes or they think they can just park there and sit in the car and wait. Of course they're not allowed to but they think they're above the law. I was in the strip ball ones I parked my vehicle no problem a police officer was giving tickets out he checked my wheelchair permit and I asked him why he says because people misuse these permits quite often he says wait till this guy gets back to me he said he went to go pick up his disabled mother this man will be getting the full fine because his mother was deceased and was not available
Carl, if I remember correctly, some places have 2 separate offenses relating to wrongfully parking in disabled parking spots. The first is simply parking in the disabled parking spot when you're not disabled. And the second is something like fraudulent use of a disabled parking placard. Last I heard, each offense was for around $900 in San Francisco, so if you get nailed for both offenses, you're looking at about $1800 in fines.

Just today I had someone giving me a hard time for parking in disabled spot. My plates are permanent disabled. Just because I don’t look disabled doesn’t mean people can judge. I hide my pain every day to inspire my children. Not for others to determine my needs.

We need officers like these, over here (UK). We get daffodils and snowdrops that look all very pretty, walking up and down the streets - If you ever see them! The offenders just keep on offending. Right outside the shops in town, one fast food delivery service seem to think that the disabled parking spaces are there for their own convenience, not that of the customers of theirs, or others' businesses.
We definitely definitely need more citation officers like that in California. cuz people block or take up the handicap parking space to go into a weed shop or to a store and not come out, so when this happens I park right behind them or they can't get out they have to wait till I get done I know it pisses them off but they have to learn a lesson they're not handicapped it shouldn't be there

I agree on the jail time. I think the second violation should include mandatory 30 days in jail. Every violation after that add another 30 days and double the fine each time.
Well in Europe there are countries where using a disabled packard issued to someone else is a felony, the US should consider this too.
What gets me is that they act like it no big deal "Oh just going in for a second" sometimes I'd like to see how they feel if they had to be in that position for a day or week. I say make fines at high as $1000.00 and if they use someone else's tag, take it and return it in a year from that date. If they don't need it then they can live without it for a year.
My nephew was crossing train tracks and was dragged by a passing train. He lost his left arm and leg and qualifies for a handicap placard. However, her refuses to use it because say's he's not handicapped. Just missing an arm and a leg. Now 31 years old today, he stands (on one leg) at 6ft 1". Lucky to be alive and full of spirit.

it happens all the time around here. i got checked one time since 2009 when i got mine. i didn't mind because they was doing their job. took less than 2 minutes. but i see it all the time people park get out crab a few kids and run into a store or something. i even know one girl that uses her mothers and renews it and that woman has been dead for 8 years i have even turned her in and nothing has ever been done. i am so glad to see this going on.
these generate so much more revenue than your average parking ticket, police departments should think about how to write more of these.
People don’t understand that it’s not the location that’s the most important it’s the extra width that is needed. The ramp is also very important.

I never ever place my car on a disabled parking slot. I rather walk a lot than doing that. Why I do this? My father is in a chair. I know how much people struggle with this problem.
There are many, many, many architectural barriers that makes the life of a handicapped a painful torture. This HAS to change.
It’s not about educating those offenders. They absolutely know what they are doing is wrong and illegal.
In order to stop this action from happening should be easy, hire more people to site tickets and charge more for fines. Minimum of $750.00. Double it for the second offense, three times for the third offense and so on. If the driver is not the person the handicap placard was not given to, then charge that person to. They had to give them the placard. Hit them where it hurts, in their pockets.
I took a pic of a parking enforcement truck parked in the HC spot for at least an hour, stood there for a few minutes thinking he's just giving a ticket to someone, but he never came back, so after shopping (farmer's market day on Venice, Culver City) I figured he'd b gone, but it was still there

Similar issue when the entire fire dept takes the big rig to Walmart to shop for supplies for 3 hours while on the clock and takes 10 spots for the truck.

The problem here in the UK at shopping malls is, no one to enforce it. Private property as far as cops are concerned and the malls/supermarkets don't bother.
I like how he says that "motorcycles" park in disabled spots. Well, I've got news for you. I'm disabled and I have a plate on my trike that allows me to use the space. Its not what you drive, its how far you have to walk.
And even if you ride a motorcycle, you might still have a blue disabled badge/placard.

My mobility scooter comes out the back of my car, but I need the extra side space to open the door fully in order to get in & out. Not all spaces afford that extra room. A few local ones only give it on one side meaning I have to park facing the wrong way so that the ramp blocks the 'road'.
My abusive ex husband parked in the emergency ambulance entrance space at the hospital when I was in hospital having our second child, who came early and was on life support. We had to go home without her while I was waiting for a parent’s room to become available. It was the space the ambulance parked in to rush me to theatre when I was 8 months pregnant and haemorrhaging. When I (politely) asked him to move the car the acted like I was a cheeky woman with an attitude problem. His response to all of my logical requests. When a parent’s room became available I arranged a rental house and left him from the hospital. This entitlement was what be believed he was owed in every situation. He was a controlling, abusive b******.
Moral of this story, how people park and drive is a true reflection of their character. Don’t ignore red flags like I did. Don’t believe like I did that you only deserve to be tolerated instead of celebrated. I’m still alone 9 years later age 37 but maybe I’ll find someone at some point.
I agree with Brett's stand on the actual space around or next to the vehicle. I am a paraplegic and a full-time wheelchair user and don't mind if the space is half a mile away as long as I can get next to my car. People leaving no space to get in or out is the problem, not how far away the space is from the venue
I sat near a chic-fil-a waiting for my daughter and watched 6 cars park in the 2 handicapped spots in front of the store to run in and grab their to-go orders. The parking for to-go is directly across the parking lot, maybe 50 ft away. The major were young adults, late teens/early 20s. Absolutely dismal to watch. No thought to anyone else.
In Southern Calif, I see a lot of very expensive low profile sports cars, Mercedes, Lexus, Corvettes, BMW, parked in these spots. Usually doctors or family/friends of doctors who get them to write whatever notes are necessary to get a placard.
When I broke my Femur and dislocated shoulder I was offered a handy cap parking tag, I declined it!! Id rather my 94 year old grand parents get that spot. Or your grand parents, VETS, etc. Yes it would have helped me, but I was younger and it was not needed for me. EVERY car parked Ill legally in a handy caped spot should be towed and a Ticket issued. Give respect to our elders and War Vets!!! RESPECT.
I survived a 165 foot rock climbing fall and spent 7 weeks in a coma so I could park close. What have these lazy bastards done to justify stealing my parking spaces?
Must tell this story,after a men’s league basketball game we all went foe a beer,a friend of mine drives a sport car he parked in a handicap spot we all told he should not park there,he did .when we came out all four tires were flat,no air no harm to them.he had to call a tow truck for air,as air was being put back a police man happened by.say no more big fine and a breath test,he got home very late.
I recall one guy who had a placard due to having had a heart attack but spent his days flying model planes. He would take the closest spot to the restaurant at lunch time leaving a lady who could hardly walk to park far away quite often!

Before back surgery a few years ago, my wife had a disabled hang tag. She needed a close space, but not one with room for a wheelchair.
Maybe we need two types of handicapped designations. One with a Wheelchair logo and the other with crossed crutches for those who can walk, but not far.
I have the same concerns that this gentleman has but I am quite a few years older. Over the years I have used techniquesnakes such as parking further away at the end of a row so I can't be blocked. I also have parked next to posts which sometimes works. If you don't need to be up front and close try other methods. Even a regular space might work if you park along the line on your right and that will increase your space on the driver's side. I drive a Tudor Monte Carlo and pull my wheelchair out of the back seat. I am a quadriplegic and it took a long time to figure this out but it works.
My favorite thing to say to an illegal parker; "This spot is for the physically handicapped, not the mental."

As an MSer with a placard, I rather not park in a handicap spot cause I know there are others who need it more. Plus, the longer I struggle to walk the less I will need the placard.
If there was one cop to each place of business to patrol the handicapped parking violators and issue tickets, they would probably earn the cities a lot of money!

The three most common excuses:
1). I was in a hurry.
2). There was nowhere else to park.
3). I'm only going to be a minute.
None of those entitles you to use that space. You're lucky you don't need it. But you might, one day: 85% of Americans will become disabled at some point, either permanently or temporarily.
There are only two situations in which a police officer can cite you on private property, without permission of an owner: handicap parking violators, and parking at a fire lane.
We have a reason why we even keep disabled spots free when we do late night car meets free during late night car meets in our small town in Germany.
There is actually a guy here in a Wheelchair who has a absolutely mad modified Opel vivaro. That thing is just lit. He made everything look cool even the lift and that thing is fast! (for a van) he got basically everything on it from a bigger turbo to a side pipe

I think there should be a number that any disabled person can call if someone is illegally parked in a disabled 🅿️ spot. It could connect to the police and a tow company with a contract. Maybe a number like, TOW- 869, or something easy to remember like 111.

Wrong...what it comes down to is not educating people, but enforcing stiff fines to those that get caught...there are no excuses for this violation...I envy the officer that is passing out these tickets... I wish I would have given that honor.

On a similar note , I carry around a tubeless tire valve stem and a Shrader valve remover ( available cheap at many auto parts stores ) Yes, I'm permanently disabled . The easiest thing to do is not even vandalism because nothing gets destroyed like the bicycle tire incident below. You quickly go to one side of the vehicle violating the handicapped spot and you use your tool to remove the Shrader valve that instantly deflates the tire and go to the diagonally opposite tire and deflate it too. Then the fun really begins. FIRST, you lay the removed Shrader valve right next to each tire so no charge of any kind can result in your arrest, Air is free, right?
You call 911 and say that my handicapped spot is occupied by a violator and please send out a patrol car immediately. By this time the owner of this vehicle knows he/she/it has to call a tow truck to move the vehicle ASAP. a cop arrives and hiding a grin, writes that $400 ticket. That tow truck driver arrives at that point and can add a special surcharge for " rescuing a vehicle " from the handicapped spot. I'll bet that person never parks in another handicapped spot again...

Don't know what your blue disabled cards are like in the USA but in the UK along with the cards reference number there is always a photograph of the disabled person who was issued the card
It seems that you don't do that in the USA at least if there was a photograph on your disabled blue cards the police or whatever could see if the person was in the car or not
I've found that a lot of people use someone else's placard. One man who parked in one wearing a tennis outfit threatened me when I asked if he was disabled. I took a picture of his car and his license plate and went to the police station. He didn't get in trouble for threatening me, but he did get fined for parking in a handicapped spot.

I'd key the car that was parked in my disabled space or if on hatched area ensure my wheelchair leaves a lot of dents & scratches on it.
You fail to realize that to a sister, the Handicapped parking space is the Holy Grail.
They will park in that space whenever they feel like it.
