Learn how to make a tote bag with a recessed zipper. This one is made to fit a Mahjong set but you can make it any size you want. Make a tote for yourself or as a gift. I made these for my Mahjong-loving relatives. You can also add interior and exterior zippers or more pockets to fit your needs.

The best pattern for a zip top tote I've found!
Thanks! Let us know if you end up making the tote bag. We would love to see it!
This was exactly what I needed to make a mahjong bag for my daughter in law. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions!
I just want to thank you for EXPLAINING HOW to make this bag any other size!! This is such a tremendous help! I also wanted to add that I absolutely LOVE the way you installed this zipper. So much easier than a normal recessed zipper! I'm going to figure out my dimensions and make this bag.. Thanks so much!
Great tutorial especially since it includes a zipper, really good job thanks for sharing.
I really like that you are straight to the point
Thanks Amelia!
Sew (so!!) glad I found this tutorial! I have the cutest cotton sheets that I bought for another sewing project but the pattern repeat was too large but they would make the cutest beach bags. I have sewn bags without top zippers but I really wanted a zippered top - can't wait to do these!! Perfect for summer!!!
We're sew glad you liked it!
Thanks. Great tutorial. I watched last night and made a bag today using your dimensions. It fits my Siamese Mah Jongg racks and tiles but is a bit snug. I’m going to add an inch to the width, two inches to the height and 1/2 inch to the gussets to make bags for a standard Mah Jongg sets which have wider racks. Now I know what I’m giving my Mah Jongg friends for Christmas.
It s the easiest recessed zipper installation I ve ever seen!thankyou for this!
Glad it was helpful!

Glad it was helpful!
I love the way this bag looks. Great detailed instructions. I’ve been making bags for a long time and this is the first time I’ve seen a zipper installed to the lining and a top piece added. I really love how this looks. In the process of starting a new bag and came across your video. Going to try adding my zipper this way. So neat and finished looking. New subscriber to your channel. Can’t wait to see what other projects you have shared. Thank You!

Buenas tardes seria muy bueno hacer el tutorial tambien en español. Gracias
Nice like your tutor thanks
Por favor pasar medidas en metros gracias
I don’t understand why lining is 2” shorter than the outer fabric ?
I love this!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Awesome
Great for small travel an weekend! (from Rio de Janeiro Brazil)
Todas estas bolsas ya las hacíamos hace 45 años en la secundaria, éramos las niñas quienes las hacíamos no las mamás. Nosotras solitas sin guía ni moldes
Very nice
Love it and will do it
This a beautiful bag. Thank you for the video. Although the video is too fast for me. I watched it 3 times already. So the 2 pieces of fabric you sew a zipper on, plus the lining should be the same length as the outer material?
Very niceeeee love it
Thanks so much 😊
Hi, I just made a bag and pouch. What did I do wrong? The lining was not as deep as the outer bag leaving a 1+ inch gap between the bottom. Has anyone else had this issue? I think the lining should be at least the same size as the outer portion. I had to rip out and add two inches to make it work. Also, when making the video for future reference please use very distinct colors for lining and the bag and specify how to lay out the fabric (right/wrong side) of fabric when sewing in the zipper. It wasn't entirely clear.
The instructions seem crystal clear to me.
Adorei parabéns 👏👏👏👏
You are awesome 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!
Medidas em Português ajudava muito. Obrigada.
Thanks
Lindos bolsos
Nice
Great tutorial but I can’t write down the instructions fast enough …is it written anywhere?
Thankd
Yes! You can find our blog post here - www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/how-to-make-a-tote-bag-with-a-zipper/
great tutorial! I already sewed together my exterior I was hoping to add a zipper, do you think its possible to sew it on my lining ?
Sure, I don't see why not.
If I am changing the depth of the bag to be 7" should I change the height of the zipper panels from 2.5" to 3.5"?
Yes, I would!
Super...but where we get fabric like you in india
How do make this with an inner divider? Love this
I would make an extra piece of lining and sandwich it between the other two. Just make sure you do not sew it down when you are adding the zipper.
What model of Brother machine is that and is it semi-industrial?
This is a brother DZ2750, it's not at all industrial. It's actually a super base model machine! We wanted to make sure that any projects we were putting out would be able to be tackled with any old machine.
En español por favor
Very nice tutorial! Can you tell me what # Fleece stabilizer you used?
Oooopps....I just found it! Thank you!
Does OFS still sell that fabric? If so, what is the name of the fabric?
This is the fabric we used - www.onlinefabricstore.com/robert-allen-at-home-amapura-persimmon-fabric-.htm
It's out of stock right now, but if you give our customer service a call they might be able to get an ETA and place an order.
You do a beautiful job; however, I am color deficient. Unfortunately one in so many million for women. Here I am one of those. The problem I had on the Visual was the muslin and the backing you were using. I could not visually see the difference in color. On top of that I was using an altogether different color so on the lining I had to be very careful in the top or bottom on your lining. I know this sounds confusing but the only answer I can up with is the lining faceup or down as you did on the 2-1/2" strips.
Hi Judith. Could you clarify what step you are having a hard time with and maybe clarify the question a little more? I am going to be checking back so we can help you out here. Sorry for the confusion with the light colors.
@@onlinefabricstore I am color deficient so my lining was blue and yours muslin so I did it completely backwards.!!! Finally I post a note on my fabric the word muslin and then I was fine. Thank you so much for getting back to me
@@JudyK3021 Oh no🤦♀well I am glad you were able to get there. Good work!
Looks like calico, not muslin

You really should have thought about your color choices before you made a video. I can’t follow you’re instructions because the fabric looks the same.
Nice video but you talk to fast so it was confusing to me
Awesome
