    Love Cherry, but this is balones. It was a great trade for Toronto. Sundin was one of the best forwards of his generation. The Leafs' problem was that they played fire-wagon hockey in the dead puck era...and still almost made the finals 3 times. The 'trap era' was dominated by Lemaire's NJ, Dallas for a year, Detroit (who had 4 lines of 2 way players all bought with big bucks, Colorado (who had a stiff depth from the Lindros trade + Sakic and Roy). The Leafs were on the wrong side of the trend here, but they would not have made the conference finals 3 times with Clark and not Sundin.

    • @lakeeriesailor2852
      @lakeeriesailor2852 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the made the conference finals twice during the Sundin era. The trade was good in the sense that Wendel was nearing the end of his career while Sundin was still young. on the other hand, the leafs sucked badly for 4 years after that trade, although if they had kept the 93-94 lineup intact they would have likely have still gone down hill.

      @SupremePrestige The trade looked great from day one. Sundin was younger and had scored 79 goals and 199 points the previous 2 seasons before the trade. Sundin in the Hall Of Fame. Loved Clarkc who as Cherry says played incredible that year! Clark's style of play took years of fhis career with and was always hurt. He never came close to 46 goals a season again. Fletcher traded him when his value was at an all time high and fleeced Québec in this trade.

    • @johnnyskinwalker4095
      @johnnyskinwalker4095 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      they have fleeced Quebec as far as skills and age but they won the cup twice in Colorado and as someone that watched Quebec play, them getting Clark completely changed Sakic's game. He would never have become the player he became without Wendel. He went from a one dimensional skilled player to someone that was leaving it all on the ice at every shift inspired by Wendel's determination. Sundin was great but Quebec getting WC was a great investment.

Sundin was a great hockey player for a long time with the Leafs, but not nearly as tough and nasty as Wendel was. The Leafs never made up for the lack of toughness that Wendel had and, coincidentally, have never gotten over that hump.

    Oh, geez... You can really see where Don tries to put his biased, anti-non-Canadian slant in there. At the time of the trade both had three 30 goal seasons... The difference? Sundin had only played in 4 NHL seasons, Clark had played in 9. He was the heart and soul, sure, but he was also often injured. His durability was always a question. Sundin had played 80 games in every season. Clark had played more than 70 just once. This was a great trade and proved to be a fantastic deal for the team. Even at the time, while Clark was a supremely skilled folk hero of the Every-Man in Toronto, Sundin was a special player and he was coming to Toronto. But, because he's Swedish, Don hated it. Story of his career.

    Sometimes I’m ashamed of being a Scorpio bcz we have passionate likes and dislikes! Meaning STRONGLY for or against . This trade of my fave player gave me very hateful thoughts of Matt Sundin & it wasn’t even his FAULT ! It’s my nature so I try to keep dislikes on the down-low. “Grapes” is right on!!!
    BTW-Wendel is also a Scorpio!!♏️🦂

      Ron MacLean, without googling, I don’t think that’s accurate! By conference final, do you mean the third round? I think 93-94 was the last time they made it out of the second round.

      @@bigsteed007 they made it to the conference finals twice with sundin...first in 1998 against buffalo who went on to lose to Dallas and again in 2002 against Carolina who went on to lose to a stacked detroit red wings team

      But Sundin didn't have what Clark did in the locker room and on the ice....grit. Sundin was great, no doubt, but trading Clark took the heart out of Toronto. Getting Clark back didn't help. The damage had been done. Shame.

  • @murray1978
    @murray1978 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wrong about Sundin: He ended up being the greatest Leaf of all time. He also helped carry the team to two final four appearances. After the trade, Clark didn't do much and we screwed ourselves for trading for him in 96.

    For the Nords it was pretty much a leadership trade. They had many skilled guys but they lacked that spark. Pierre Lacroix when he was named GM asked his guys "who is the biggest leader in the league?". A few names were dropped like Patrick Roy and Wendel. He could not get Roy(at that point in time) but he phoned the Leafs for Clark and then the deal was made. I think he gave out way too much but let me say that Wendel was absolutely gold for Sakic. He completely changed his game. Sakic became more determined and it helped him win the cup a few years later with Colorado.
