Interesting that you get purple urchins up there. One of the largest fisheries for urchin in CA is just north of Santa Barbara right around Hendrys Beach. Ya have to get them with scuba gear. My son and I sampled one at the SB Fish Market. They taste like cake frosting. Super awesome.
Are there signs letting people know if they are entering into a marine reserve or conservation area where "it is unlawful to injure, damage, take, or possess any living, geological, or cultural marine resource for recreational and/or commercial purposes", with certain exceptions? I am guessing/hoping that you were not harvesting these urchins further past that "point", in a reserve. I wouldn't want to be cited. Thanks in advance for any insights that you can share.
Totally! As you're walking to this particular spot, there is a sign near the parking lot that depicts where the marine reserve area begins. All of the foragers, etc stay on the 'fair game' side of this line, as it's pretty well defined. At other spots, these borders can sometimes be less clear, which is why it's super important to do research and search on Google maps before heading to a location. At HMB, there are typically game wardens walking around to ensure the laws are being abided by.
@@Tackleboys Thank you for sharing. I remember being in that area on a school field trip some 28 years ago and remember one of my teachers saying that we were going to enter a reserve and were not supposed to disturb the marine life. Glad to know that the game wardens are out there to make sure the laws are being abided by.
Hi! Thank you for the video. Do you know of any places more north of half moon bay to collect Uni? Around point Reyes or bodega bay? Let me know please! I’m excited to try!
Would you happen to know if there are any places near San Diego that have a good sea urchin population? I would imagine La Jolla has some but I can’t find any info anywhere
HMB seems to be the place for uni. just need to find a spot there! any pointers on what type of coast? seems to be common with rocky areas with a large tidal zone. been striking out on good areas :( California fish seems to say they are game year round but do you think they are good in the warmer months with the blooms? I don't know if their diet of kelp is something to be wary of.
@@Tackleboys Kelp crab are actually very sweet and tasty. I like to pick a few if I haven't found anything else. Thanks for this video btw, I've always been too lazy to walk that far out but now that I know that's where the sea urchin are, I'll put in the extra effort.
Any glove does work, you can grab them in normal neoprene dive gloves, but the spines will tear up softer materials and your gloves will be gone in a couple dives. It's best to have tougher gloves mostly so they'll last longer. You don't really have to worry about the spines punching through gloves. If that happens you're doing something very wrong
@@hanp.4450 search up pillar point tide pools parking lot. The tide pool is locate below the cliff. It better to go out at negative tide so you can walk longer distance into the ocean floor.
I've heard you can harvest uni all year round (only spawning will affect yield, so fall is the prime time to harvest) and sea urchins are not bivalve like oysters or mussels, so they don't filter the ocean and therefore you're not eating their filtered garbage.
You do know there is a no take zone in that area? At 7:18 you seem to be in the no take zone. Everybody knows what these little critters are. Because most people watch videos or even read and learn before they make them and post. Vain children with too many cameras and nothing to say.
Can you please send additional information on this? California game wardens encourage folks to harvest sea urchins.. in fact the daily limit is 40 gallons (8, 5 gallon buckets). Sea Urchins, while native tend to take over marine and tide pool ecosystems, so I've been told foraging for them is actually beneficial to the ecosystem.
@@Tackleboys The problem is not necessarily harvesting the sea urchins (I disagree that foraging is beneficial to the ecosystem. It is only beneficial because we killed off their native predator, sea otters, along most of the American Pacific coast).
