While I’m searching was thinking how silly thing this is I’m searching but look someone made a video about my need of learning how to draw lines correctly. I appreciated 🙏
You are SO appreciated. The no-pressure drills resulted in some spontaneous patterns to practice the same movements. My perpendicular line work is improving too, although still pretty challenging.
Good question and it really depends on how much time you have so it will be different for everyone. If you have other drawings to do then I'd suggest 10-15 minutes warm up beforehand. The warm up could either be working on skills like in this video (just do what you can in 15 minutes) or the warm up could be doing a quick practice sketch of whatever you are drawing.
do you use and easel or a flat table? Will a drawing easel help to move from the elbow and shoulder? I'm drawing in a smaller sketch book and on a flat surface. I'm finding it difficult to move from my shoulder and elbow with control. Help?
For filming I use a flat table. I do have an adjustable drawing easel that I will use if Im drawing on bigger pieces of paper and having something more upright will definitely cause you to work from the shoulder more because it's harder to rest your hand on the page. For a small sketchbook though I will still work on a flat surface. If you are working on a page 8x11" or smaller then it's totally fine to work from the wrist as most of what you draw will fit within that movement. When you need a wider movement for long straight lines or to do quick sketching or gesture drawing, try focusing on allowing the hand to slide on the page with swift movements as you draw, as if you were gently brushing something off your paper with the side of your hand. This is the same as working from the elbow/shoulder but it might be a little bit easier to think about!
Yes! Unfortunately for me I have to keep my workbook still for the filming! It is a good exercise in itself though, to try drawing lines at different angles without turning your page as then you have to learn to move your pencil in a different way 😊

Amazing how a few simple lines can turn into a wonderful abstract. Thanks, Emily. 🙂

Thank you so much - glad to hear you are seeing improvement!
Thank you for this episode. Looking for the next one!
Coming soon :)
thank you for the video, how many exercises and time do you recommend for a warm up?

Lots of paper turning. 😄😄

Thanks for the tip. I will try your suggestion today.
