I can agree with all of these rules, especially the one about not dragging the romance out forever or making it the only focus of a character or the story itself and needing a bit of drama or conflict to spice things up.
Personally (and this is really just preference) I also like it when the story starts without anyone being in love. To me the part before a relationship starts is the most interesting, how the feelings grow and develop over time and how they actually end up being together. Though one thing I dislike is when characters don't realize they're in love... (like I can't even remember how often I've seen this cliche scene of a nurse/doctor/teacher/whatever explaining to some oblivious person that nothing is wrong with them and that they're in love...)
+Dionysus24779
I agree with everything you said save for the last one. Don't assume everyone has the social skills to know whether they are completely head over heels for someone or not. I enjoy characters that have to learn to sort out their feelings, and can get some input from others not in their position, because it can be interesting to watch the character who is in love, react to what is essentially their own feelings
rashan141 I see what you're saying and yeah I kind of agree.
I also find it really interesting if a character reacts to his or her own feelings, like if that person isn't used to being really angry or never really hated someone or maybe never experienced true sadness before.
And it's okay to not realize it at first and maybe have it pointed out by someone else. It's even okay if it's a more... "obscure" emotion that somebody might not be aware of even exists. Like nostalgia or ambivalence or something like that.
It's even okay and can be interesting if a character is just confused and cannot quite understand his or her own emotions or what they mean or how they relate to a situation.
But... there is just a line somewhere... maybe I'm just biased and am just tired of characters having to have it explained to them that they're in love with someone else. I just think it's so incredibly overused and requires a character to be really naive or ignorant. I just cannot relate to that.
And this is of course just personal preference, there's nothing wrong or bad with enjoying characters having to learn that it's love they're feeling. Just like some people prefer stories about already established couples to see how their relationship works out etc., while I'm more interested in the part leading up to the "getting together".
Dionysus24779
No problem, we just have different tastes. Even I have a threshold for how long can handle watching something like that, so no worries.
+Dionysus24779 it so happens Kare Kano fits your criteria as well haha.

I'll check it out on your recommendation.
I feel like you ought to give oremonogatari a second shake. I watched it after seeing a lot of shojo romances (say I love you, kimi ni todoke, toradora, etc) and it felt like an intentional antidote to all the drama that crops up in those shows. Its comedy is built around undercutting what you expect to happen in shows and manga like it - romantic rival shows up, it's dealt with very quickly. characters are misunderstanding each other, so they immediately talk and get on the same page. Think of it like shoujo one punch man.
what I love about it is that the problems that crop up in the relationship are mostly inside takeo and Yamato's heads - which is very true to how really good relationships shake out. you don't get painfully unrealistic scenarios where characters tell each other what they're thinking and misunderstand due to poor word choice - instead they happen because the characters have unspoken worries they don't want to bring up when things are going well (don't want to spoil the moment, etc). it's nice, for me, to see a show that says "you're worrying about nothing" every once in a while.
+Mother's Basement Yeah I kinda got the idea that it was subverting a lot of cliches, but something about it all didn't sit right with me. It was the moment Takeo leaps from a burning building like Spiderman and all anyone has to say is how cool he is for saving anyone that I wondered if this wasn't taking wish fulfillment a little too far. I might try it again someday tho, I don't consider anything to ever truly be dropped.
+Mother's Basement I have a pair of friends who have told me this exact same argument a couple times. I've tried multiple times to get into Bakemono but every time I do the forced enigmatic dialogue and characters' love of the pronoun-game makes me want to kill something. Also, none of the characters act like people or make decisions a normal person could see even a little logic in.
I think the show is ruined for me because I just don't find the characters likable in any fashion and the primary gimmick of the light novels was puns and word-play (kanji-play?) which did not translate very well into the animation. Not gonna lie though, that sister-tooth-brushing scene, gets me every time.
+demacry Ore Monogatari, not bakemonogatari. I know, it gets confusing.
Totally agree with everything you said. I really enjoy My Love Story and the characters, but I would really like a conflict where the characters had a problem with each other rather than with themselves. Not every issue in a relationship is their heads.
Honey and Clover had great character development which made me care for the characters and empathise strongly with them. It is my favourite romance anime of all time.
I was just waiting for KareKano to be mentioned.
That show was, well, unique
Kinda suprised he made it through this video without mentioning Golden Time at least once. May not fit every criteria but it's my favorite none the less.
that's what's I liked about Steins;Gate. A lot of people complained about the first episodes being slow, but I think that was good, since all the characters were already established by the time shit goes down, thus making it far more effective.
Steins;gate is not a romance anime buddy
Aussie True
Steins;gate has a romance in it , buddy. The same concept applies.
+Salty CakeBombs
Romance is the primary motivation during the climax.
#2 I haven't seen this series, but by your description I'd say that winning her friends was a kind of conflict too. Then the conflict about the rumors was like the climax to that arch. Very solid writting right there.
Now how to character build in ressonasse to what the story needs is an art that many writers miss.
1. Non generic characters
+Derikimi
That's kind of hard to pull more often than not. You realize that right?
+rashan141
Not really. It just takes longer to do than it does using familiar archetypes. I write stories, and I guarantee that my main character is unlike any other main character you'll see, a scary-as-hell demon-stabbing pariah constantly on the run from the law (among other things) who goes out of his way to ensure that as many conflicting stories of him exist as possible, so as to spread more fear of him amidst the crooks and demons unfortunate enough to run into him.
He's also a really snarky bastard who will not think twice before stabbing you with his rapier wit. And it only took me four years to get him to the point where I actually felt comfortable telling people about him.
+rashan141
And even so, you can still make characters that are SOMEWHAT unique. Tsukiumi from Sekirei, for example. At first, she appears to be your standard tsundere character in how aloof she is most of the time. And then we get a scene where she flat-out asks if her love interest ever worries for her, and seems comforted by his admission of doing so.
And then we get a scene later where she sees him oggling the bikini-clad bod of another member of the harem, at which point she says, "If thou wishes to stare at breasts... Then why dost thou not stare at mine?"
And that was the exact moment when she became my favorite character in a series full of my favorite characters.
+rashan141 its called good character writing, you know like trying to convey real personalities instead of rehashed archetypes
Vin1997
Well, even so, you can still get characters that are remarkably similar to other characters, intentionally or otherwise. Like how Alucard from Hellsing Ultimate (screw Hellsing, that show was terrible) is remarkably similar to Spawn. Or Dracula, even.
I have actually been doing the same for about a year now, and have watched as many romance anime as posible; new, old, with action, in slice of live, etc (excluding harems for obvious reasons) and to date Kare Kano, even with the disaster of its final episodes, to me is still THE BEST. Being its characters, its relationships, the fact that it also manages to be a sexually active couple in a beautiful and romantic way, all of it is a rare gem I'm yet to find again. It´s good to see it get some love. Thanks Digibro! X3
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode! It was very insightful; with things I felt while watching anime but never made a conscience effort to think about. 1 more subscriber :)
One of my favorite romances has been, and probably always will be Fruits Basket. It's not a very well known anime which kind of upsets me, but I remember it being a really big craze among my friends. A couple years pass and I re watch, re read the story and I'm in love again. It takes you through all these character's lives, familiarizing you with them and making you yearn to know more about the mysteriousness of it all. Of course, I probably have some bias here since it was my very first introduction into Japanese anime and manga. I can point out a few of the flaws, most of them present in only the anime. The opening scene starts out with a narration of a sad back story coming from a cheerful deredere, the art isn't the greatest, though this is early 2000's so I can't quite complain, sometimes it feels as though the main character isn't changing at all while everyone else is going through some intense character development, the idea sounds cliche. Still ask you to check it out!
As soon as I heard #1 I was like 'This guy dropped Golden Time so hard!'
Oh my god ive watched all of these!?!? I love you!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHH😍
ano Natsu de matteru was one of my summer anime. I loved it, and especially the scene art, but from an analytical standpoint I can see where you're coming from.
Hi I was thinking about "kawaisou" the whole speach until you mention it. I agree that it doesn't fit a lot of your points.
But I found a second way to watch this anime by seeing it as a photography of sensibility and loneliness.
The main character is for me (i didn't read the manga) Kawai senpai because she makes choices and composes her solitude with everyone else. The male protagonist symbolises the way you can easily fall in love if you are also misunderstood and left alone, and the way superficial love can be ; and it triggers the question of what is love.
His only role is not to be someone to be implied in, but to close us in a point of view where Kawai is quite misunderstood and mysterious. His presence and role serves the isolation of Kawai. It participates in the gape between her and the world.
The change of the colours in background and surounding characters shows the changes in their mind and the development of their self conscious.
Of course the editor says it is a love story, and of course she falls in love by magic, but I think we can figure more than that, otherwise it would just be a stalker story.
I think it would be better if she didn't fall in love but just open to him as a normal friend.
Sorry for my english, don't esitate to discuss this with me.
I totally agree in all of your points. In Sakurasou however, the fact that I focus on the aspect of drama and the romance as the sideline, I guess i liked it, alot even it's a lil bit melo dramatic.
+Victorioiii Barrameda A bit? Lol that show was over dramatic to all hell.
Well we all have different standards, the fact that it's over dramatic will lessen the quality of drama. There are better dramas than Sakurasou, Tokyo Magnitude, Rainbow, etc
Dont get me wrong, I like Sakurasou, we only have different opinions where nothing is incorrect. :)
5:41 'growing' relationships.... cheeky cheeky
for romance I'd have to say eureka 7 is THE anime people should watch for a excellent romance that you legitimately care about
Kelsey Campen meanwhile watching this vid i just thought that i should watch that due to fact it's in my "plan to watch" list :')
Zero no Tsukaima fails at #3. I'm looking at you Siesta! You were my favorite character until your personality became shitty!
+Boshwa
Ever seen Sekirei?
Right? She was a sweetheart until they turned her into a cliche love-triangle bitch that tries too hard.
I completely agree with what you said, especially ith the dragging out part
Great analysis!
Also now I have a bunch of new romance anime to watch! :3
All I really need is a reason that the characters are in love. Most shows, not just anime, that I've seen tend to have the characters either in a relationship that I can't imagine how it got started in the first place or deciding that they're in love out of nowhere.
was rewatching Gamers when I realised it kinda checks every box from this
Grew video, very insightful. Keep up the good work.
If you liked Kare Kano, I highly recommend watching Hana Kimi - the dynamics between characters and their emotional struggles, as well as investment in the characters either thanks to their good will, lovableness, or their straight up weirdness, is inherently intriguing and hilarious, as well as sweet!
I can't say I agree with your opinion on Kimi ni Todoke's second season -- I thought it was quite enjoyable and knowing a couple like this the "dragging out" seemed more realistic to me than tedious. However after Marmalade Boy, all anime romance drama tends to be skewed with me. Lol.
#3 is so important, probably the reason why Spice and Wolf and Toradora are two of my favorite anime.
For me I need in no particular order 1) clever or interesting characters 2) a story with a plot/ characters with a goal 3) if you were to gender switch every character while maintaining the same personality it would still be a good show you'd watch. (I don't actually do this but every romance I've actually liked satisfies this)
I kinda wonder what digibro thinks of Shuffle! I haven't seen it since I was in highschool but I remember liking it and haven't really watched it since. It seemed like a pretty good anime at the time.
Would be nice to have a continuation to some romantic shows as well... Most of them just end with a confession and the two main characters getting together, which is fine, but that's just a small and enjoyable portion of a romance. There's way more than this, not everything is a kawaii super hazukashii story. I would like to watch both characters grow together, live through hard and sad events together, go through relations breakdowns and still love each other. I haven't seen any anime doing something like this aside from Clannad AS, so ye
Huh, I guess I'll watch/read the various anime/manga to compare and see what you mean. Might take my bias off watching/reading romcom in anime/manga.
Read/Watch Horimiya. I think that one does an awesome job at all the aspects you talk about.
Unfortunately, it seems as if the link is no longer there. More importantly, no one has commented on this video in 5 years, it seems. So here is my comment.
I like coming back to your old videos periodically.
I liked the romance in The Familiar of Zero, it was conflictive and the characters actually were well developed, and hell, I even liked the romance in Code Geass even that wasn't a romance anime, is really heart breaking how it ends.
I love the one called Akagami no Shirayukihime it's kinda funny now and then
My favorite romance series are: Onegai sensei, Nagi no asukara and maybe EF a tale of memories. These ones i like and favorite because Onegai sensei has a simple yet wacky story in it, Nagi no asukara for its drama, growth of characters and setting, and EF i really liked the romance can overcome amnesia conclusion. However other romance series i wouldnt say enjoyed but i would recommend and wouldnt forget are True Tears, and White Album 2, just because of tragedy and drama involved with, ESPECIALLY White Album 2 (that was one heck of a ride). Other romantic series that i like but didnt feature romance as a centre feature would be Amagami, and Aa megami sama, they were nice and fun but i wouldnt classify them as serious romance series.
Akagami no Shirayukihime was the best show of last season. Love that show
You don't true pain until you read the Kimi Ni Todoke manga and realized that you lived the amount of time it take to complete Japanese high school twice but the characters haven't finished it. I guess I mad that it didn't grow up with me.
Was going to watch Kimi ni Todoke, but not anymore. I feel like it's a good thing. Dodged a bullet. Thanks, Digi.
Oh god, when the relationship goes absolutely no where. I hate that shit. I've dropped series because of that. Great video, I agree with all your points.
I actually enjoyed Saekano a lot, not because of the romance, it was a side thing that I never considered. I just enjoy the comedy, it was a fun show to watch. I guess it doesn't excuse its' lack of well written romance but I enjoyed the other aspects more.
Could you please do a analysis on My Teen Romantic Comedy: SNAFU? onegai desuka?
How about a review on Shinsekai Yori? I really enjoyed it but would love to hear your opinion!
finally someone who's watched KareKano.
life outside of the romance is soooo true. neglected not only in anime.
He's not the only one who's seen it.
it's kinda ironic how you put ore monogatari as you thumbnail picture and only have a complaint to offer for it. of course it's your opinion but it's one of my favorite series of all times I clicked on the video because of it and now i'm slightly upset of what I got.
and moreover for that specific reasoning.I too enjoy seeing conflict between characters and couples because it brings out their personalities and ends up strengthening their bond after being dealt with right and I think ore monogatari does that very realistically.
perhaps it fits my low keyed personality with them but these are really problems I can totally believe people like them can encounter. and how quickly they get solved through communication and with that amazing kindness they show really touches me..
too much drama is usually a bigger issue. just how the couple may bicker and fight over misunderstandings to the extreme making them unlikable.
+silvermangawolfygirl I'm not allowed to chose my thumbnails thanks to strikes on my account lol.
Ho-
Wh-
Wha-
Wai-
Google, what the *FUCK* are you even doing?
+silvermangawolfygirl Seriously? LMAO. Fanboys complain about everything these days jesus.
Creative Ziggy lol I doubt you even read half of my comment before rushing to spit your thoughts on it . for starters if you bothered to read my username, i'm a girl :) even though that really doesn't make a fanboy's opinion less valid.
silvermangawolfygirl You complained about him having an opinion on an anime you like, if that isn't fanboyism/fangirlism(gender equality :D) then i don't know what is. Whether you sugercoat your initial remark is irrelevant because it's snotty. It's like you were offended because he used the anime as a reference pic while only having a negative thought to accumulate for it. And what does it matter if you're a girl or not?
The problem is that Japanese loves subtle, and most of animes subtle is the rule and not the exception, they never show PDA or any kind of intimacy other than warm looks and smiles, I really hate that, even when the characters are portrayed as husband or wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, they never kiss or show affection to one another. And the opposite is annoying as well, because if you really want someone showing intimacy, you need to end in Hentai.
Rule 3 and 4 were pretty much preaching to the choir for me! Especially number four! I've encountered romance stories which take FOREVER due to the fact that the world revolves around the romance on some level yet the people involved dance around the issue and CONSTANTLY MAKE NO PROGRESS. I'd respect a romance plot more if it involved the characters getting together and face the problems of maintaining the relationship more than one which wastes time on the characters actually getting into a relationship.
I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying is one of the cutest romances ever. Whoever needs a short dose of anime goodness should definitely watch it. Honestly, it's so cute.
I was recently catching up on anime based on shojo manga and since many of them are romances I've noticed some common flaw: authors try to use some hook to lure audience but then very quickly levitate more and more towards very stereotypical take on not only romance but male and female characters in general. In other words, characters are given some intriguing traits only to be stripped of them in a matter of few episodes. Some interesting backstory is suggested and then ignored. So I would say I want romantic series to stick to their premises and develop the concept and not just use it as a foot in the door. Like Okami Shojo to Kuro Oji, Ao Haru Ride and Kaicho wa Maid-sama seem to have very good concept for a heroine but then reduce her to just another damsel in distress and always cheerful simpleton that heals hero's heart with her magical smile. Urgh.
Digibro, any chance you can list the animes you talked about in the description? Thanks.
I wonder what your opinion would be for Onegai Twins. If I can remember correctly it ended up being one of the phew romance anime's that satisfied me.
I don't know how anyone could have watched Saekano while being proud that they enjoyed it.
Fruits Basket is the best romantic comedy or shoujo from Japan probably. I'd recommend the manga, but I don't know how much manga you actually read.
omg I saw Bokuru Wa Minna Kawaisou, i loved that anime :D!
Lovely Complex: perfect love-drama!
aye no Conclusion on the Kimi No Iru Machi? it had one frustrating ending.
For me the pacing part was flipped with Sakura-sou and Kimi ni Todoke.
I liked Sakura-sou way more than Todoke because the plot, at least to me, didn't drag on, everything was quick and snappy, while in Todoke it felt like literally no progress happened during the first 9 episodes.
Hi Digibro, sorry if my english sucks but im from Chile and i'm not used to write in english, i follow your videos while ago and i think you're a really good critic, even if i don't agree with all your ideas but i think that this video was really fucking good, i agree at the the points that you made, also i think that you missed the opportunity that people has a misconception with the meaning of a good romance anime in comparisson with a really sad anime, this last use really often the romance and the deaths as elements to make sadder the series but this don't make it a good "romance" series, i think that the points that you expossed in this video are closer to the esence of this anime gender, that's why i think that a lot of the top 10s in youtube are wrong when they claim series like clannad o ano hana as the best "romance" anime because even if i love those anime because i think they are good but not as an romance anime if i consider the esence and what make this gender so unique.
Thank you for this video and keep making a good work
PD: i hope you understand what i tried to say jaja.
Kiki no todoke omg I got that second part, yup
Did you throw a jab at Zero no Tsukaima or did I misunderstand? I think that was the only media in my life that made me cry… though I was young and would probably not cry nowadays. Been meaning to re-watch it for a while but never got around to it… I have good memories of it so I hope it’s not just nostalgia.
My favorite romances are Ef - A Tale of Memories and CLANNAD, even though I’ve forgotten all about them by now. Can’t rank Zero no Tsukaima as I watched it too far back to even remember how much I liked it.
+ALAKTORN Everything I said while it's on-screen applies I think. " Characters will come inches away from finally revealing their feelings, only to comically misunderstand one-another and continue on with their frustrations-and that can be fine as long as the series is still funny and endearing in its own ways."
*****
Wow can’t believe you actually replied, and that quickly. Thanks.
What do you think about chihayafuru ?
+MrJukaio Haven't seen it yet, but it's on my to-do list.
I see. Okay :p give it a shot it's something else
+Digibro OMG yes, watch it. My wife and I were totally hooked by it. Does a really good job of fullfilling all the things you mentioned, though it doesn't put a whole lot of weight on its romance aspect. Focuses a lot on personal development, competition and teamwork, and the characters striving to fullfill their goals and dreams.
Chihaya is a cute mess ^_^
Karekano is awesome, specially the manga. (cause the ending is actually good lol).
God damn! You are a good critique.
Yo... Real talk... All anime reviews need to be exactly like yours... it's 4:15 AM
Let me go to sleep
DIGIBRO! Have you seen Mysterious Girlfriend X? I can review it in two words: disgustingly brilliant!
I'm thoroughly impressed. you've earned a sub friend.
kare kano is very good indeed.
what do.you think of the anime dog girl and black prince? I'd found it great and funny and at some points pretty predictable at some points.
+Willie Hawkins II Haven't seen it.
you might like it but the main male is a bit of a jerk. (understatement. total jerk until last 4 episode.) but it is still nice
After this can you do an episode on an analysis on lovelive, idolm@ster, and the idol community within japan? I really like lovelive but I've heard that thebidol community is corrupt? I really would love to hear about that!
+Dakota Ahrndt (WatermelonLollipops) Unfortunately I don't know much about the subject. I've never been able to get into idol stuff or really understand the appeal.
What do you think of the romance in Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of Sinners?
+Knight Artorias not really a romance tho
BonDieu617
Shiki and Kokutou have a romance going on that develops further/gets explored more with each movie. Romance may not be one of Kara no Kyoukai's genres, but it definitely has going on.
Knight Artorias It _is_ one of the more influencial themes in the series, but it's not what it's about. When people think of KnK, they usually think of Shiki killing a bunch of people/ghosts/stuff. It's like Black Lagoon in that regard: yes there is romance (or UST at least), but it's not a romance series as described in the video. Thus asking for an opinion on it in the comments of this particular video comes a bit out of the blue.
I really really wanna know if he's seen clannad I think that's pretty good for this list even for this list especially the conflict part
Totally, it's the most developed and thematically consistent romance to me, mostly because the narrative itself almost never actually focuses squarely on romance
+Ushio Okazaki I remember him not really liking the characters (though, I'm going off of stuff he's written years ago).
Oh well that sucks
Subscribe to my channel if you want to see someone totally gush over clannad in the near future :)
have you ever seen okami san and her seven companions?
NYEEEESSS
digibro, i realized that you watch filthy frank.
i watch filthy frank too
we should be friends man
I see your point regarding Shirayuki but I'm definitely not as patient as you are.
I just stopped watching at some point, they were literally behaving like a couple, getting very close (emotionally and physically) and I had the same feeling you had with Kimi ni Todoke. After episode 7 or 8 they seemed just a confession away from being together for life and yet I was waiting and waiting.
+Sniperfuchs Well, in Shirayuki they don't really have that feeling of "I want to get with them" until later. Both characters only fully realize that their in love towards the back end, and then there's an ep or so of thinking it over before they hook up. The characters don't spend any time *literally* afraid to confess for no reason like the KnT charas were for 30 episodes.
+Digibro Hmm I guess I can agree on that, but in some episodes I was literally shouting "FFS NOW KISS AND MAKE BABIES" at the screen :P
Ok so I'm watching this video and I'm hearing all of your specific complaints about romance anime and their characters but I can't agree. It seems that for you, you want anime to spend a lot more time in ACT1 to build up their characters before you get to ACT2 and shit gets real.
To me, that sounds like it could be a pacing issue of a weekly watch vs binge watching an anime where in a weekly watch you can ruminate over the characters. It also sounds like an issue of anime pacing in general for you. It's pretty easy for me to like a character, but it seems like a show really needs to sell that character for you to like him. For instance, I love Yuusha from Maoyuu episode 1 but it feels like you'd need more time to care about him.
Also, liking a character is pretty subjective. To be honest, I really like Sorata as a character. Since episode 1 where he was introduced as a dreamer that seems socially competent but really can't face himself. Most of the characters in Sakurasou were really developed now that I think about it. It feels like to me, you actually didn't want to like them. You couldn't see past their trope-like exterior and actually see the characters themselves, so you couldn't appreciate their struggles.
I also disagree with the whole, perfect for one another thing. If the anime is all about romance, yeah I can see your point, but if it's a romantic subplot, then I don't see the problem. It usually elevates the experience for me. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the Zero In manga.
OreMono is just... fluffy, I think. No drama, no antagonists, just a cute couple and the lives of their friends, family and others. It's an entirely different genre when compared to Lovely Complex for example (*loved* that one).
I am surprised you didn't like sakura sou.... It had well developed characters, well fleshed out romance, plenty of drama, and a lot of humor. I do grant you that it was slow to start, but once you get going, it is one of the better anime that I have seen, although not the best.
Wish I could relate but sadly my biggest issue is I'm too shallow to watch most romance based series play out. I need the male to be attractive but my ideal is more seen in Shonen/Seinen where romance is an afterthought if thought about at all. Ore Monogatari's Takeo came so close but that face, its truly a test of prejudice that I failed at instantly. He's so nice but I'm so awful ;__;
I also need some sort of sexually gratifying payoff which somewhat understandably doesn't happen often in non-adult series but it could. Basically I want a slightly more romantic version of Berserk, someone suggest me that or make it.
I have face palmed at least 4x in this video.
I need a good Rom/Com that goes pretty deep into the romance. Any recommendations
Golden Time
+paulo sutiak watched it
+Xscape4K White Album 2
+paulo sutiak Thank you
princess jellyfish slays all of these
I love your videos even though you talk super fast haha. Do you play league perchance?
how about Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy?
13:10 well i DID want to watch that anime... thanks..... X(
omg your life is ruined lol😂😂😂😂
Seriously though... Have you seen Romio's Blue Skies? It's really by far one of the mosr fulfilling slice-of-life/Romance Animes out there, despite its age...
Just... REALLY!! You won't regret it!
+Akras Maduk Have heard of it, but wasn't aware of its genre.
Its originally adapted from a European written novel ( which alone is a major reason as to why you should watch it), so the writing is a bit different than your usual shtick...
It has some pretty solid pacing, with the romance being an element of human interaction and a catalyst for character growth that evolves naturally rather than being the pedestal of the plot... Which, arguably, is an extra point in the show's score _ at least for me _
It's one of the most endearing anime out there...
It's old, I know... But with that considered; it has some seriously sublime, subtley expressive facial expressions for its characters, which could very well surpass anything that comes out today....
Seriously, just whatch the first episode, you'll get what I mean.
wait you haven't watched akatsuki no yona what
what is your number one favorite anime and why?
+Fitz Alan You mean digibro's favorite anime? It's K-On
Have you watched Itazura na kiss?
Gimme a sec I'm gonna use the first two points of your video as a framing device to bitch about worst girl.
Both point #1 and #2 are broken by the romance in Sakura's Route in F/SN and is probably the part I hated most about that route early on. Sakura is so unlikeable, early on and is only an interesting character when the romance is WELL underway and her "big problem" is revealed.
This reveal makes her previous scenes enjoyable in hindsight but I can't help but despise her on my first read because before the reveal, her only character traits of note are that she loves her Senpai, is terrible at hiding it, and she gets ill pretty often.
She's a nice person sure, but she is SO nice, and literally has no other defining traits.
Romance anime is life.
I agree with what you say but I don't want "Likeable" characters. I want engaging characters. Basically characters that are interesting to watch. The thing I don't want is the personality less void that seems to be the lead of most herem anime.
Yo Digibro and Subs. The Anime Mafia strikes once again, and this time they left undeniable proof of existence. Check ThatAnimeSnob's recent video and if you agree with the points made, spread it to people who are likely to keep their eyes open!
I know this comment is irrelevant but I was wondering what your thoughts were on mlp season 5 episode 18? If you've seen it
I would've enjoyed Sakurasou a lot more if Best Girl had won. Also I needed more Ryuunosuke and Jin.
It always did bug me when a show would absolutely refuse to be realistic with its maturity. Even if it is never explicit or graphic, its a vital part of human interaction and believable stories. It's immersion breaking in a way.
When the college age romance ends with the culmination of just holding hands its about as believable as the virgin Mary.
Kare Kano did a good job with it and it was even pretty damn Pg-13 ontop of its amazing job of building characters and their motivations.
Another show that wouldn't really be in the romance Genre but atleast did this much right to me was Berserk. All though it was pretty graphic and hides nothing, it was a much more compelling romance than most of the actual romance Genre to me simply because it was believable.
True enough FB wasnt my cup of tea but it was def better than most shows, and I know many people who enjoyed it.
*claps* true, actually. I want to be interested in the characters and their development, not a bunch of people who are unable to confess and do basically nothing.
What is your opinion on Nana?
+Calum. He said in his live stream Nana broke him. The series made him a wreck for awhile.
ARandomGuy Yeah it does that to people lol.
+ARandomGuy I haven't seen it, is it that good?
Zackhario It's the most critically acclaimed romance anime I know. It's also extremely depressing.
ARandomGuy I see, I'll give it a try. Thanks
got any recommendations
i hated Kimi ni Todoke's second season it was so unnecessary; me and my little sister had an discussion about why it was so frustrating to watch (we usually discuss and analyze anime) which is probably why i like your channel
also for some reason you remind me of my english teacher with all the analysis discussing
I'm interested in watching it, should I just leave it after the first season?
+Ellie Smelly No. To me, the guy watching doesn't like drama too much. Drama isn't for everyone, but if you like it, then you should definitely continue to Kimi ni Todoke.
Hate to disagree with the other reply but I'd say don't bother with the 2nd season. They just essentially rewind Sawako and Kazehaya relationship so they get together again at the end. It feels totally contrived just to spin out another season.
morpheusdreamer haha its okay everyone has their own opinion :)
Agreed.
