When I lived in New Hampshire all the nurseries & garden centers used ProMix .. I used it for all my seed starting & would also add it to my garden in spring .. I've been looking for it here in Central Fl (Inverness) my local Walmart doesn't carry it .. The Rural King in Spring Hill had the Fox Farm they usually run sales on it .. I used FF to fill my Original GeenStalk and my plants grew slower and I too had damping off as well. I know it winter but this review made me realized the problems I had. I loss all my carrots except 2. At $38 dollars 2 cubic feet a bag, when you need 6 or 7 bags, I won’t be purchasing it again for my second GS. I do love their fertilizer but it’s to expensive to use per the instructions from what I remember.
That’s why I love experimenting. You never know until you try. And now I found my new favorite soil.
This was a great video. I love the comparison with the soils. I love the idea of the Pro-Mix, not only because it grew well but because of the weight. It's hard for me, 67 yrs old, to carry around those large bags of soil. Glad to know it passed the test. I just checked online & the Ace Hardware near me has it. Going to give it a try. I have been using fox farms soil in my greenstalk for 2 years and I ‘thought’ it was great. This year I was thinking of trying pro mix to save some money when filling my newest greenstalk. Your video came at the perfect time! I will definitely be trying pro mix in my newest greenstalks this year!!

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a will I need to rehydrate the compressed soil? Can I rehydrate it in the greenstalk unit or should I rehydrate it in a bucket?
I would mix it in a bucket because it’s hard to mix it once it’s in the GS
I do see a lot of people that seem to really like the fox Farms. I’ve never tried it myself. I have used Pro Mix before and it worked well. And it is easy to find it and not very expensive. When I go for a really premium soil the one that I like is from Cost of Maine. It’s kind of expensive. They have many many many different mixes for many different types of plants and situation. But it does seem to work really really well. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried it or not, but it might be worth giving it a test with one bag or something. Thank you for your video. I bought my first GS in the fall and used pro mix amended with bloodmeal and garden tone. Everything from tomatoes...jalapenos....herbs ...flowers grew like crazy!! Its all I plan to use because of the great results and being able to carry the compressed blocks.
Same here! I’ve been using it as seed starting mix and it’s been awesome. Can’t get enough of the stuff.

I have been using pro mix for a few years now, and I love it. I use it in my raised beds. I use this because it is easier to carry. I have had great success with it and yes you can use it as seed starting mix.

What a great video! I’m expecting my third GS to arrive any day now and will def try the pro mix this time around (live in FL zone 9a/b) I have used the FF previously because of all the rave reviews but like you, I haven’t seen amazing results. I can find it locally but still the price is quite high. And I excited tot try the pro mix as a seed starter - I’ve used your recipe in the past but if I can skip that step of making my own I’m happy to take a short cut . thanks!!!

Thank you for a great video. Not terribly surprised that Miracle Gro did well in your comparison. Despite the zealous anti-MG bias out here, I've seen similar results in experiments conducted by others. They almost begrudgingly had to acknowledge the superior performance of MG products despite overt bias against the brand. I don't have any evidence to support this, but I think MG changed their mix over the last few years from mostly peat to increasing content of wood-based products. Bags used to be much lighter and fluffier than they are now. I refused to pay the outrageous prices for Pro-Mix but have recently found it at Walmart, priced reasonably and I like how it performs as well. Gary Matsuoka at Laguna Hills Nursery calls Fox Farm the Cadillac of potting mixes so I figure there must be something good about it. I will say that Gary believes that any mix with ground up tree/wood products is ultimately bad for growing plants.
It was a fun experiment. I had some expectations of how it was going to turn out but was pleasantly surprised that the more reasonably priced souls did the best. I got my Promix from Walmart and it was also pretty good, price wise.
Great video I’m waiting on my greens talk to arrive and will be new at everything. This weekend I will go hunting for soil and supplies so thanks for the timely video. I’m in Miami so I’m hoping I have some success at growing g my favorites like fake sweet potatoes broccoli Swiss chard and berries. Any tips are appreciated and I’m also planning to watch some of your other videos .

I've been using the same ProMix Organic soil for the last couple of years and I've had good results; I use it exclusively for my pineapples. I do prefer to use it because it's so light and dry but I don't like the price 😢
I’ve found that it’s cheaper when you buy it at Walmart (in store). At least at the store by my house.

It sounds like you really enjoy the ProMix by improving it a little bit. Does that mean from now on you will use Pro Mix even in your raised beds and not spend the time of creating your own soil?

I definitely plan on using the Promix in all of my container gardens. As far as my raised beds I’m probably gonna mix it in with the compost that I make and the current soil I already have. Raised beds take a lot of soil so it probably wouldn’t be cost-effective to use Promix for something like that.

Speaking of containers might you or your subscribers recommend pollinator plants that will grow well in hanging baskets or a green stalk. FL native plants are preferable but not limited to them. Thanks
A lot of native plants have pretty deep roots but a few that I have in containers is Corkystem passion vine, coral honeysuckle. Some others I like are starry rosenweed, blanket flowers, black eyed Susan and stokes aster. For a larger container, salt and pepper.

Absolutely!
I think you might have had problems with HappyFarm because it already contained perlite and you added more perlite to it. Out of the three soils you tested, it was the only one that came premixed with perlite. I personally have never used HappyFarm, but I have used Coast of Main soil with great success. But because it is expensive, I "stretch" it by adding more cococoir, vermiculite and compost to it.
You're one of the few garden TH-camrs I follow regularly, since you are just north of me. I am in Hudson. I really enjoy your videos.
Did you ever do a follow up on your peanut harvest? I am thinking of trying peanuts this year and any tips would be helpful.

Which type of fox farm soil did you use? I know there's several different kinds of fox farm. I was told not to plant seeds into a specific type of Fox farm, It's more of an amendment type soil.
It was Happy Frog. That was the one Susie recommended. Is that the one you were referring to?
Maybe just a simple piece of screen cloth in the water pan, or sponge.

Great video as i have been buying Pro Mix for about 3 years now. I also think it is very similar to peat moss and i was always curious if anyone else was using it and what they thought. I usually buy a few of them in the spring. I have regular raised bed soil by kelloggs (talk sbout lifting something heavy). I think they're about 40 lbs. Anyway kelloggs also has the sticks in it. So i use the pro mix with it and i use other amendments into the mix i.e
Bone and blood meal and earthworm castings, black kow and perlite. It gets really nice and fluffy. I top all of my beds off with this mixture and i love it. I usually do this once a year and in between i just usually do something simpler. The pro mix has been about $11.84 each which is a really good price. I'm hoping it hasn't gone up like everything else. I was really glad you did that experiment. Good to know you liked it too. Fox Farm is too expensive for me.

It was a very eye opening experiment. I’m glad I did it. I like the Kellogg raised bed to top off my beds but I like the idea of mixing it with Promix to lighten things up

It was the Happy Frog variety. That’s the one Susie at GS suggested.

I started my greenstalks with promix originally because of the price and the recommended foxfarm was not in my price range at all. The promix worked for me, in the heat of summer in SC, it is easy for it to get really dried out if not watered for a while ( it almost returns to the dehydrated state it came as in the package. In the fall I emptied each tier and mixed with fresh compost and replanted. The plants in my greenstall are doing the best, compared to my pots and raised bed. I going to continue this as my greenstalk soil and maybe seedlings this coming season. I've never used fox farm but I did research in the past to see what all the hype was about. It could be that it has everything already and adding perlite may have kept it too wet for the seedlings since perlite holds moisture 🤷🏾♀️. Unless I get foxfarm on a deep discount though,it may never make it to my house lol

Promix I got at Walmart and Fox Farm I got from Amazon
Walmart and home depot also puts the promix on $3. Clearance at the end of the season so stock up then
Question: If they were all on the same tower, and foxfarm's being closer to the top - which it tends to have more drainage than others, and having the others towards/at the bottom, wouldn't the bottom have an advantage here since all of the nutrients from the upper tiers are also draining down to them? I recall on the Epic Gardening channel, they did an experiment and showed that plants towards the top tended not to do AS well as those towards the bottom for that reason.
I only say that because I have a couple tiers of strawberry plants that are in Strawberry Fields soil w/ added perlite, and they are doing fantastic, and I live in Pinellas County, FL :D I had such a hard time initially with strawberries in the greenstalk, I had 2 rounds of bare roots all die in a matter of days/weeks, and I couldn't get the soil to dry for some reason. I went 2 weeks without watering, and it was still wet, even with all the added perlite -granted, we had quite a bit of rain after I planted. But I sort of just left them alone, and one day some of them just started doing great, and then I used their runners to fill other pockets lol. Sad story with happy ending, they just started flowering and producing baby berries :D

That’s a good point. It is possible especially since we have had so much rain but I would expect the very bottom to do the best which it didn’t but it was close. I struggled with strawberries too and I finally got them growing. I ended up using the Promix for them. It is all about trying to get good drainage down here.

I believe she planted 1 slip per pocket in a video she did last year. I’m probably going to do the same.
I’m in 9a and have had issues with watering & growing in the summer. I’ve been super bummed, I only got it 2 years ago
I have another video about GS problems you might want to check out. It might help. It’s tough to grow anything during the summer in 9a so I move mine so they get a lot of shade and that helps

I seed started in my GS last week. I’ve really only been misting the pockets at this point to keep the seeds moist. When should I start only watering from the reservoir? Or should I be doing both from the start of planting the seeds?
I would do both so the soil in the center stays moist to encourage the seedling roots to reach for the deeper water. I usually switch once the plants are about 4 inches tall.

I think the potting mix would be better but I could only find the garden mix which was why I used it. If I could get my hands on the potting mix, I totally would 💯

Do you thin your seedlings down to one plant per sleeve?
It depends on the veggie. Most are 1 but small plants like lettuce, beets, and radishes I’ll do 3.
