    Using year 6 grades is senseless and ridiculous. I mean come on,you can never really predict how much someone has improved by looking at what they have done 5 years ago and using the old results to alter the actual sensible predictions made by teachers its mind-blowing.

      People don’t understand... up until year 9 I just didn’t care about school or work at year 9 I made a decision to actually try and do well in grades every time I see my predicted grades it makes me feel like I can’t do well because they’re so low. It’s so dumb using year 6 grades as actual grades people can change

      L DN it’s going to work the same as it does every year, if your calculated grades meet the requirements for your course then you’ll get it, if they don’t then you can go through clearing or appeal the grade. However universities this year will also be using references and personal statements more so than they usually would when accepting students.

    As a teacher, I will not be responding to a student who asks me 'do you think I am at risk?'. Answering that question sets an expectation. The best policy is to not say anything.
    I know it is a confusing and unsettling time for students. By all means ask questions about the process but recognise that you cannot do anything now to influence your grade. All the best.

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand your reticence. It isn't about influencing the grade, it is about knowing whether to spend time revising for the exam when it comes, or whether to concentrate on preparing for next steps. We could definitely tell a student that we think they are at risk of not getting the grade they need.

    Mr Salles: I am in year 12 and things are really difficult right now as I am completing A Level coursework at home and having to finish year 12 content independently. Do you think that 2021 A Level exams and grade boundaries will be adjusted accordingly?

    • @oliviawildblood1639
      @oliviawildblood1639 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      jaffa they won’t adjust the grade boundaries themselves as grades are based off of how well people do as a cohort. E.g. the exam board won’t decide that you need a certain percentage for an A*, they will just take the top 5% of marks and those that are in that top bracket are awarded an A*- that’s how it’s always been and that’s how it was with GCSEs. This means that one year, you may only need 60% to get an A* and the next year you may need a higher percentage- it’s entirely dependant on the standards of those you are competing with. So if the whole country suffers from not being able to complete their final term (which I imagine they will), the grade boundaries will naturally be reduced

    • @Oscarstevens760
      @Oscarstevens760 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If the teacher knows that student could have done better then there must be evidence to justify that thought in the first place. Hopefully that evidence is taken into account and boosts that student's grade, even if it's only by a single grade. Although, you could always re-sit later on.

    • @bethking4354

    • @Oscarstevens760
      @Oscarstevens760 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bethking4354 I read that the teachers can give a predicted grade to a student without giving much physical evidence, so long as multiple teachers can reinforce their claim. For example if a student is performing at a grade 8 in English and the teacher knows this, however there is a lack of physical evidence due to a student missing their mocks or PPEs, the student can be given a grade 8 so long as multiple teachers can agree on that deserving grade. This means that a student can be given a good English grade for being generally formal and literate in speach, despite there being no papers to prove that. Don't quote me on that because this is new news and therefore could be false, however the fact that there is too much evidence (per student) to analyze (Mocks, PPEs, classwork, homework, extra assignments etc...) suggests that this is likely true as the exam board require no proof, only a grade for each student.

    I'm getting mad the the people who are saying that it's unfair to use their mocks because they didn't revise for them and it isn't a true reflection of their skills.
    Newsflah: that's on you. Coronavirus or not you should've revised for your mocks, because in the very rare occasion that you are in hospital ect... and can't take your GCSE's, they usually use your mock grades. It's yall's faults for not revising for your mocks, and no one else's.
    Like if there was a genuine reason why you couldn't revise properly ect... for your mocks, then that's fine. But if you have low grades just because you were lazy then that is your fault.

  • @MineCraft-vu6sm

    Hi I am not a student, I am a Science Graduate. I had a query, why should a student's performance in year 6 decide, how they would do in year 11.
    That's like half a decade, a child's brain is still developing and they could have done a lot better. To put emphasise on a 5 year gap, people can age and look totally different in that time. What would be the point of them doing assessments, and attending classes (for 5 years), when they are just going to get as what they would have had at age 11
    My story: I was bullied by other students, in my primary school, and did not get support from my school. Had a 3,3,3 in my SATS. Learnt to read and write at 12, although my grades picked up, instead of my school updating this, they default put my actual grade as a predicted grading the following year.
    E.G: I got in top set maths and had the highest in my year A*, but my report card said I got an E. I got fed up and my MUM sent me to a private school. My GCSE's were a string of A's. I personally think that teachers perceptions on judging students based on grades years before should change, anything could change in 5 years.
    You do have great advice, I wanted you to know my story as peoples perceptions and outlook on things could change, in the state school I went to I became a laughing stock by the teachers who looked at me as a "waste of space" when wanting to get into the higher paper. In private school, I got the highest in my school, which had exams that were harder.

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well done on your achievements. The teacher's grade will be the most important fact, but it will be compared to how students in the school did in year 6 and how, over the last two years, students in year 11 made progress.
      So, a student given a grade 7 by a teacher will probably still get grade 7, but they may also be moved to a 6 or an 8 after those other factors are taken into account.

    Hi and thank you. That confirmed my understanding of the situation.
    One of ny students is completely homeschooled and I'm solely responsible for his grade. I've been seeing him for less than a year as he was excluded last February but he only got funding for tuition last June..
    He was due to sit the exams as a private student in a college but that was literally just using the college as an exam centre for the purpose of complying with exam regs. In other words, they've had nothing to do with teaching him.
    He did mocks in December (which I marked). Since the cancellation we are working in coursework/extended essays, which I will submit to the college after I mark them, along with my predicted grades and the mocks. Otherwise I'll have very little evidence in which to base my predictions.
    My question is... he has made extraordinary progress since his exclusion which was for his own protection. He has gone up from grade 3/4 in June 2019 to 7/8 now
    If I can't submit the coursework, how can I prove it?
    Thank you

They told me I won't be sitting the exam this year, not even in November, and my grade will be awarded as predicted grade from my tutor. They also gave me the option to sit the exam next year at much cheaper rate. Those who are 16 or doing Maths and Eng Lang are likely to be given the option of predicted grade or to sit in November. I don't know if this implies to all the private candidates but I thought to share.

    When you discuss SATs, do you mean that these will be taken into account by teachers/exam boards when calculating our grade? Or do you mean that the exam boards/teachers will loom at how the whole country overall has performed (so overperformed or underperformed) in comparison to their Y6 results to see if it matches with past years ? As my SATs are not great but have worked at grades 7 and above for GCSE so if it is the former it will lower what I should have got. Hope that makes sense.

My revision technique was so bad I didn’t know how to revise I tried very hard. Now as I’m starting to improve they CANCEL them exams. And now they are going to be using the grades we have achieved in the past. This is not going to be fair for so many students. I won’t get into the sixth form I’ve applied to and I won’t be able to retake because my sixth form won’t do that for new students. I’m devastated and I’m extremely stressed. Everything is just ruined for me and a lot of other students too.

    I was wondering if this is going to be the same at private schools? Just because so far we are being told to carry on with work and we will continue with this work after the Easter holidays online. I’m not sure if it’s because they are being cautious or making sure my parents have a reason to still pay the fees. But I just have no motivation at the moment to do the work they’re setting. It’s like there’s no goal anymore. I passed all my mocks and never did SATs, instead entrance exams which they never told us the results for. I’m just worried I’m making a mistake by not doing any work. The only work I’m properly continuing with is art and photography, which almost seems like a joke now.
