    This makes me think a lot about how so many girls have "baby dolls" when they're little, like they're pretending to be a mother. You'd never see a little boy carrying a baby doll or pushing a fake stroller. It annoys me a bit how that goes.

      I played with those and my dad took it off me, thought it would turn me gay. But I also made Action Man make sweet love to Barbie before I properly knew what sex was, so I think he should have been a bit more chill about it. Its cos of numerous anti-gay shit my dad said I found it so funny when my dad had to have a camera up the arse and all those prostate exams, winded him right up for years... right up until I had a near-fatal internal bleed and had three of those tests in one day. Can't joke about it now, but at least the first one was done by a female doctor. I thought it would be less weird. I was wrong. Second one wasn't too bad, third one overdid it, he may have just molested me a bit.

It turned out that my dad was using them instead of his razors because I was buying a better brand that had a better angle to it. I asked him why he didn't buy a pack for himself instead of continuing to buy his bad razors. He couldn't answer the question because there was no reason beyond the packaging being pink to not buy them for himself.

      @adrianna True. However Russell seems to ignore preference a little bit. The reason people do different clothes for boys and girls is mainly because it wouldn't be profitable to do otherwise. There are plenty of designers that actually use the same designs for both girls and boys, and they still use sharper colour for boys and softer ones for girls.
      There is a clear preference, whether from their parents or the kids. Now should we ask toddlers what they want/prefer? Should we go against social norms even at the expense of the toddlers? Or should we indoctrinate children in either direction ?
      I believe we should maybe just move on and let the kids develop themselves, it is not the clothes or toys we buy them that defines them as people when they grow up.

All the advertisement show girls playing with dolls and everything pink which makes them believe that that’s what they have to do. This created stereotypes and puts ideas and boys and girls heads that they have to only play with certain toys which can eventually effect bigger decisions like career paths. My parents let me wear and play with what I wanted but I couldn’t count the amount of times other kids called me stupid for wearing ‘boys shoes’ just because they had the colour blue on them. Carl New “Women are not discriminated against”, really? You didn’t state you were a woman, you’re arguing that we have achieved gender equality, and your name’s Carl so I think it’s safe to assume you’re male. When you aren’t the one being discriminated against, it’s so much harder to see the discriminatory actions unless they’re extremely explicit (e.g. when women weren’t allowed the vote). But have you looked at media representation? That’s what shapes young girls’ (and boys’!) mindsets. How many female characters can you think of in films/tv/books/comics/etc. who have their own storyline and personality besides being in love with a man or a narrative tool to further a man’s storyline? Sure, you can probably think of several. But what if I ask you that same question again, but switch the genders? How many male characters can you think of who have a storyline that isn’t focused on love for a woman or who is just used as a narrative tool to further a woman’s storyline? I can assure you the answer to that question will be lower.

    • @hollybramhall1351
      @hollybramhall1351 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Carl New How about the proportion of women to men in a situation? Whether that’s in real life, or in a film/show/etc., or even just a single scene. Because generally, if 17% of the people are female, men see it as equal gender representation. But if 33% are women, then men see it as predominantly women. So next time you think a scene is dominated by women, just do a quick tally of men to women. I bet there’ll be more men than you think.

    More issues with clothing: Girls have clothes that cover nothing. At school, when the dress code is relaxed, we still can't wear shott shorts, baggy pants, tight pants, or spaghetti strap shirts. So girls can't wear anything but jeans and a t-shirt. All girls shorts are too short for dress code. Also, they don't have pockets. People wonder why girls wear purses and I know people who thought it was because of girls needing more space but it isn't. I have multiple pairs of pants and jeans with the front pockets, if not all of them, sewn on. If there is a pocket, it is incredibly small. I can't fit my phone into any pocket, but my dad can fit his phone, wallet, and keys into his with room to spare. TL:DR I hate women's clothing.

    How gendered marketing is still a thing AND makes companies more money:
    Lego example:
    Mamma Jenny goes into the toy store with her kids Billy and May.
    A Lego set is of neutral colors.
    Mamma Jenny believes the kids can share, even build things together.
    She buys one Lego set.
    Gender marketing happens.
    Mamma Jenny goes into the toy store with her kids Billy and May.
    Lego sets are now in pink and blue.
    Billy and May have grown up being told in every facet of their lives that certain things are for boys and certain things are for girls.
    Billy won't play with icky weak girl's stuff and May doesn't want Billy to touch her things. The cootie effect from marketing.
    Mamma Jenny buys TWO Lego sets.
    Preying on children, families, and basic human function immediately doubles profits.

    • @KattReen
      @KattReen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      TL;DR: I've got your back, Sara. ;P
      "Snowflakes" Why are people still saying this unironically? It was funny a couple of years ago. At this point it's about as cool a clapback, buzzword or comeback as rickrolling. Dead meme, man. More overused than Despacito is overplayed. People who still use it regularly PROBABLY wear socks with sandals. Just a hunch.
      "We've got bigger problems to worry about". Well... Yes. We've got bigger problems than gendered clothing and toys. Like North Korea. Or asteroids on collision course with our planet. Obviously so many things. We all knew that, but thank you for filling us in, Captain Obvious. Maybe we can do something about the small problem anyway somehow? I'm not a rocket scientist or someone that has indepth knowledge about North Korea, but I'm pretty good at a whole bunch of other things. It's almost as if different people have different skillsets, enabling to work on both big and small problems simultaneously!?
      "You get offended too easily". Thank you to this person for sharing their opinion on something that is so incredibly subjective? Lol. It's usually the pot calling the kettle black too, isn't it? I think most people have at some point been agitated or offended over something that most others might not give a rat's arse about, or see as a non-issue. We're all fucking triggered, and someone that says that they never are is either lying or dead inside.
      "You need to get a life" Now this is DEFINITELY the pot calling the kettle black. If expressing your opinions online is such a huge waste of your time, then surely reading said opinions and actually typing out a response is an even bigger waste of this person's time? As a kid, I always secretly wanted to play with remote control cars and construction sets, but they were always in the "boys' section" so I never actually told my parents. Fortunately, my mum, knowing I liked putting things together, bought me a giant tub of lego, which expanded my world. Possibly related, I'm now an engineer.
    I really REALLY want to see more female engineers, so parents, don't just encourage girls to build rockets or robots; EXPECT them to build rockets or robots.

      Minty Well I don’t know about expecting them to do so. I think encouraging children to pursue a vast multitude of hobbies and activities is important and honing in on the few they truly feel passionate about, but being gender unbiased about introducing these activities.
      There’s nothing wrong with fashion, we need people passionate about it, but only targeting it towards girls and expecting them to only value their looks is toxic. And vice versa with boys. Everyone has a calling and when we force children to be so selective with their choices we hinder their true potential.

      My favourite toys before the age of 5 were my building blocks, my doll, and my teddy bear. I had other dolls, stuffed animals, cars, and trucks. Then we moved back in with my dad and he wouldn't let me have as many "boy" toys. I always wanted a remote control car or Hot Wheels but never got them. I remember really liking my Barbie's roller-blades, because they made sparks, so it was the closet I got. The pinnacle of this was in grade 5 when he made me return a scythe my mom had bought me for my Grim Reaper costume, because apparently girls can't have weapons. After that we stopped taking him seriously. When I have kids I will get them any type of toy they want (age appropriate, obviously).

      Bigger issue is that America likes to defend sexist people and things. Despite being a modernized world power.
      And considering that we consider ourselves one of the most westernized/civilized countries its kind of horrible that people talk like they do. Because there is no excuse to defend behavior like that.
      Awhile back there was a video that went viral - a waitress at a bar got slapped on the butt by a guy and instead of walk off she body slammed him into the wall and gave him a piece of her mind.
      She was slapped, so she pushed him against wall to yell at him. Seems pretty self explanatory, he got treated the way one would expect if you slapped a stranger.
      Well it was considered “controversial” with a lot of people saying the girl should be sued for assault. That she should have just taken it, that he was not doing any harm. That his girlfriend was with him so clearly he was not going to do more then that. That she overreacted and he was harmless.
      This is America, we state we are for freedom and equality. There is no excuse for something like that to be “controversial” in this day and age.
      And thats just in how your treated at work by customers. The kind of dialog people get with rape is so much worse. Other countries have rape facilities that you go to and they take dna samples off you.
      You have to do that with the police in the USA and quite often the police will turn women away. Im not saying that they refuse to see them- what they do is basically talk you into doubting what happened. Not a great thing as people will agree to about anything while in shock.
      Most hospitals are not even prepared to take the needed dna test, and no one knows to even try there instead going strait to the police.
      Then anytime a woman speaks about this they are called horrible insults making the girls bitter and jaded.

      Just think of the girls life too
      Her life is gonna be ruined forever if she was raped
      People like you are scaring girls and women away from speaking up about what happened to them.
      This is very harmful
      And no I am not saying that false accusations are not a bad thing all I am saying is that we don’t talk about how the life of people that were falsely accused of steeling or anything was destroyed. This showed that this is only a way of belittling women’s experiences and changing our thought pattern of we hear of rapes into thinking that it is probably a false accusation although only a very small percentages of cases are actually made up
      I think we should rather tackle the actual problem which is rape than making up one that is not actually that big.(I am in no way saying that accusing someone of rape is not just as disgusting as rape itself but it just does not happen nearly as often as rapes)

    When I was little I grew up with a book series all about Tinkerbell and her fairy friends. No. Not those ones.
    These ones each had talents just like the movies, but they also had a great deal of independence and spirit and wit and charm and above all other things *confidence*. There was ONE GIRL fairy struggling to find her place because she didn't quite belong, and it wasn't Tinkerbell.
    Her name was Prilla. She had the talent to basically astral project herself to the world of humans. No one understood her, but they tried to help her find her place. Except unlike the 'fitting the mold' lesson the movie teaches, in the end Prilla uses her unique skill to save all of Neverland, and is given her own Talent category. She is the only one, but they do everything for her and give her all the privilege of the other talents. They respect her. They revere her.
    Same with the water talent Fairy who cut off her wings to swim to partake in the saving as well. She is taught to be confident as a leader, to embrace her unique desire to swim and make the sacrifices necessary to do so. Except, she doesn't have to be flightless forever in the end. She's given not only a new means of flight, but a friend in the form of a bird who she rides upon and cares for and who cares for her.
    Every single book shows these girls as flawed, intelligent, brave, nervous, well rounded young women. Tinkerbell herself even maintained her temper from Peter Pan as the series is set AFTER her adventures with him. And the best part is....*the boy fairies aren't evil, they aren't mean, only one is shown to have a major crush but it doesn't control his character.* They're marketed at girls, to find *their* special talent and show the world how amazing they can be with it, but boys can read them too.
    Sure there are a lot of 'girly' elements and a lot of pink, but I personally feel the quality of the characters and the impression they made on me outweighs the need to market to girls specifically. Sure I also had Barbie and Polly Pocket and the princesses but *none* made an impact quite like the Disney Fairies book series did. I know this is a series of jokes, but some of it rings shockingly true. I'd hate to see the person I would have been without Disney Fairies and Kingdom Hearts in my life, and just raised in the shit bodyshaming and confidence destroying world so many girls unfortunately are raised in.

      Polly, jack and the old woman I can't say.
      humpty Dumpty was a massive cannon that fell off the wall and couldnt be put back because of its weight.
      baby clothes go in all shapes ways and forms, you can literally find anything printed on a shirt for any gender of you look hard enough. another thing is that any child can be dressed in any color without having to imply anything of their gender, hell when blue and prink first got popular women were suppose to wear the soft blue and men were suppose to wear the brighter pink.
      imprinting on people because of gender happens to everyone. boys are expected to "man up" when they get hurt. if they dont preform well they're called a girl. fuck boys are even told that when a girl hits them they can't hit back because theyre a girl.
      thing is, this goes both ways, this guy just takes the most extreme cases of the female side of things for the sake of comedy. not to say he can't make comedy like that or anything because honestly its funny but we shouldn't just take this at face value.

    • @RosieOleanderDallinger
      @RosieOleanderDallinger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Mystireon however heroes and soldiers sell better with boys and fashion for girls because children are being programmed to like these things more. Quite often I’ve seen young boys want ‘pinker’ things and girls want more ‘boy’ things but their parents reject it, telling them they can’t have it because it’s not what boys play with or girls play with.
      McDonald’s gender isn’t specified in the rhyme yes, however in any visual version of the rhyme McDonald is always shown as an older man.
      Sure Mary took her lamb everywhere but it still doesn’t change the point that’s made in the video.
      Any child should be able to dress in any colour and for it not to imply anything about their gender, but that’s not how it is for many kids.
      And you’re right about the fact that boys are always told to ‘man up’ when something is wrong. There are issues with the way society teaches boys and girls and instead of going along with it we might be able to make a healthier and happier generation after us if we start to make better decisions. A child of either gender should have some freedom and equal life lessons, otherwise it’s just going to create some psychological stress later in life.

      Mystireon Just wanna add that I've volunteered for a children's charity event and often saw parents actively choosing their child's toy! I had a box of different coloured balls, and countless times I've seen mothers put back their little girl's chosen blue/green ball and pick up a pink one saying "no, you should take this one because you're a girl".
      I've seen a few cases where older tomboy-ish girls would outright refuse the pink toy, but it still made me realise how these small actions are so effective in teaching young girls to act a certain way/like certain things.

As a kindergartner I wanted to be an Artist while my twin brother wanted to be a baseball player. I soon realized that in art you’re only famous after you’re dead so I gave up on that. Back to the quiz, my screen loaded and I saw all sorts of engineering and computer jobs. I went to go show my guidance counselor and she told me something that I will stand by. “You know there’s a heavy male dominance in that area of work, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t do it” So in my future, I’m entering middle school next year, and my top two elective choices are robotics, and architectural engineering. 🙂

My mom never does that. Yeah she'll kind of say it off-hand, or she'll say it if I'm doubting myself, but the FIRST thing she always compliments me on is my intelligence, then my sense of humour, then my creativity, and THEN my looks if it comes to that. I dunno, physical appearance wasn't high on my list of priorities so when I do start to feel bad about it, I can always go back to, well at least I'm smart and funny and creative. It sucks when parents FIRST focus on looks. Like, my husband's mom and grandma always talk about how pretty his sister is. None of you would actually recognize a witch if they bewitched you; you'd put it up to (bad) luck, or chance, or science. You have forgotten us, but you have not defeated us. And you never will. We are the guardians of the old world, the witches who maybe even burned at the stake in centuries past - and we remember.
      You will never know us, you will never prove us; and you will never destroy us. You will try, and we will watch as, in your panic, you burn your own people at the stake while we live on; unseen, unknown, alive. Forever alive.

      That's a great point. And being considered gay or camp is only an issue in any case because of the association with the feminine; even within the gay community, there's a lot of bias towards more effeminite men, which many have understandably suggested is just another form of misogyny.
      That's why when it's pointed out that feminism is meant to support men as well, and people counter that it should therefore be called humanism, they're missing out on the point you make that many, if not most, of the biases and issues men face are due to the bias against and fear of the feminine.

    • @Cheeziswin
      @Cheeziswin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Agreeing with you entirely, and also agreeing with LadyPennyroyal and bewtifulfreak. This is why it's called feminism - because somehow, things that are considered feminine are somehow "bad" or lesser. Let men be fashion designers, let men wear pink, let men be affectionate and all the things people consider "feminine" without ridicule, because feminine is not a bad thing.

    • @thetimekeeper955
      @thetimekeeper955 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      You're absolutely right that there are boys/men who can't be what they want because "it's too girly." But that's not a result of an elevation of perceived "feminine" jobs above "masculine" jobs the way it typically is when a woman wants to do "men's work" (because men were originally the only ones not looked at sideways for having any job at all, meaning that virtually all jobs used to be men's jobs). As others have noted, that's because "the other end of the spectrum" is, unfortunately, still about women being lesser entities:
      "Girls can wear jeans, cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots. 'Cause it's okay to be a boy. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, because you think that _being_ a girl is degrading." -Madonna (as I recall)
      This quote shows exactly why it's not okay for men to be into "women things," and why they're arbitrarily identified negatively if they admit that they are (e.g., drag queens). It's not something done to protect women (from what?). Consider the insults used against men who are perceived as noncompliant because of a physical or emotional weakness. How many of them are associated with being female? "Don't be a pussy," "Don't be a bitch," and "He bitched out" are frequently heard.
      There are also plenty of male-specific insults, of course, for bad male behavior in other situations (e.g., "dickhead" and "prick"). Generally speaking, genital-related (and sex-related, by extension) insults are quite common, and both sexes deal with it. However, women don't generally get referred to with male-specific insults (unless the goal is to shame them for not being adequately feminine) because that would imply male strength, and that's not acceptable. Uncooperative women are "cunts" or "bitches." Female things, because it's still popular to view being female as something implicitly undesirable. And this view hurts boys/men too.

      THANK. YOU. I've always been a big girl with curly hair, so I couldn't wear or use the kinds of clothes or hair products I saw my peers wearing. I started wearing adult-sized clothing at the age of ten, and all I could find was ugly stuff. That caused me to reject the feminine style, and I convinced myself that embracing a girly style would make me weak. So not true! You can have whatever style you want and still be strong and confident!
      The problem with these slogans on girls' apparel, however, is they are limiting. "Be awesome" and "be pretty" are not equivalent. Girls are taught that their looks determine their value, and that's not okay. You can be feminine or masculine or whatever, but we should encourage all children to pursue their passions (and not just assume what their passions are).

      Anne Silva I think the phrase “tomboy” already reveals a problem though: the incorrect implication those female characters are somehow “like a boy” just because they do cool stuff and wear practical clothes, have short hair, or fight in action scenes, etc. That’s why I have a problem with the whole concept of “tomboy” and even “masculine and feminine” sometimes.

Teach boys that friends can be a support network, let boys love their friends! Let boys be vulnerable, teach them vulnerability! Personality is more complex than man vs women or this make you a man, this makes you a woman. Teach boys that conquest isn't necessary, coordination and cooperation is. Let boys wear makeup, paint their nails, teach boys that being pretty isn't bad. Teach boys to confide in adults when something serious happens, teach them "no" and teach them how to process trauma. Teach girls boundaries and what is and isnt okay, teach girls about autonomy.

    See. This is the thing so many people over look when we talk about the disproportionate ratio of females in STEM fields. Girls aren’t interested in going into STEM because we teach them not to be interested in it from the moment they’re born. For eighteen years of our children’s lives we bombard our boys with sports and science based interests and the boys who want to be in the fashion industry or do something “feminine”, even if they’re really good at it, loose out. And girls who might’ve excelled in STEM fields never even discover their interest in it until it’s too late because we tell them all they’re good for is their looks.
    Don’t get me wrong. There are physical differences in women and men that causes some skewed ratios in the workforce. But for anyone who thinks that the way our society categorizes our children has no effect on this is delusional.

    • @lukayaba4793
      @lukayaba4793 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Percy Ross By your logic, we should also teach women to become garbagemen, coal miners, and other jobs that are mostly occupied from men. Also, you need to take your tin foil hat off. We have the right to choose, and with as much power feminism has right now and how encouraging women to go into STEM fields maybe it’ll change. Or maybe not. Forcing it down peoples throats isn’t the way to do this.
      Men and women are biologically and psychologically different. Gender stereotypes will always exist. It’s their influence on people that can change. Personally (although I’m probably wrong) I think paying attention to them (like feminists do with the very idea of patriarchy) is part of the problem. Furthermore, our society isn’t directing stereotypes at our children. If a child sees a toy that appeals to them, they’ll ask their parents to buy it, and the company will gain profit, meaning that they’ll push out more of them which will gain profit. The main reason that women are interested in fashion is simple biology. Women and men have different brain chemistry, and generally, women have an innate desire to look pretty (which also can be explained by natural selection) which translates into the 21st century, where they are interested in fashion. I could make a similar argument for interests for men for example the reason why 93% of workplace fatalities are men. Is there a social construct adding on to these gender differences? Yes. But that’s to be expected, it happens all of the time not just with gender.

    • @percyross7612
      @percyross7612 7 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Lukayaba By what logic? We don’t tell our boys to be garbage men and coal miners. My point wasn’t encouraging our daughters to go into male dominated fields, it’s was just to encourage our children in general indiscriminately to pursue worthwhile careers.
      My point was that we teach our children their gender roles from a young age and the roles we have created are dangerous and harmful. There’s a reason why women in first world nations have the highest rate of depression and low self image. It isn’t that their problems are frivolous. It’s that we tell young girls that they have to be pretty, that their worth based on how beautiful they are, that the only major contribution they can make to society is skin deep. We don’t do this consciously of course because we too have grown up with these stereotypes. We naturally push “feminine” toys and products onto our girls because we were raised to believe these are things girls like. Our children have preferences because they grow up with society telling them what preferences they should have.
      I mean of course there are biological differences between men and women. I’m not disputing that. But to believe that the disparities of gender ratios in our work force is only due to biology is completely delusional. How we raise our children has a big effect on their preferences in the future.
      It’s why children often go into similar career paths as their parents, or have similar hobbies. Biology may play some role in this but really it’s a mixture of both nature and nurture. And right now on the nurturing side of the spectrum we are failing our children, and in this case our girls. We aren’t forcing anything down anyone’s throats. You speak from a perspective that our preferences are purely our choices and our upbringing have no effect on this but that simply just isn’t true. I’m not saying force all women to have an interest in STEM. I’m asking people to encourage all of our children, regardless of gender race and upbringing, to pursue worthwhile interests. And if they still aren’t interested then that’s fine. But it’s not fair to not even present the opportunity to our girls to grow an interest then use their lack of interest later in life to cite how girls inherently aren’t into STEM.
      On top of that it’s very frustrating when that small percentage of men cite the skewed ratio of women to men in the STEM fields as evidence for male superiority. Of course there will be some skew but they completely ignore the social aspect of it. They blame women for not being in STEM while at the same time discourage women from ever developing an interest in it. Do you see the hypocrisy?
      As a society we grow and evolve. We find things wrong with our society and fix and improve upon them. Tearing down these damaging gender roles in just the next step. But this doesn’t just get done by sitting back and assuming society will change on its own if that’s how it’s meant to be. Many of our rights and luxuries we enjoy today come from hard work and effort from those that came before us. Things don’t just magically get better.

      Percy Ross You do realise that there have been tests on infants with little to no social interaction so they do not have a biased view. The girls mostly went for "girly toys" and the boys went for "boyish toys". This proves boys and girls are different. So they will have different career choices. IF they really wanted to go into science or engineering then they would not be deterred by having "girly toys". And also I'm pretty sure more women graduate from university then men it's just women chose to go into other professions even though they have a wide range of choice.

    I remember reading this action book when I was like 11, and when I got to the end, the back of the book was like ‘did you enjoy this book? Look for more like this in ‘Puffin’s Books for Boys’ and then it had six other book recommendations. And I remember thinking, I’m a girl and I really liked that book I guess I’m different from other girls.
    Which is where I believe the whole ‘I’m not like other girls’ issue stems from. The idea that you are alone when the things around you tell you that girls are more stereotypical to what they actually are. And when I grew up I realised that actually a lot of girls liked that book and I wasn’t the only one, however the ideas of ‘this gender likes this’ that are represented seemingly everywhere made me think that I was ‘different’, that I was like a boy. Idk that memory has just stuck with me for years.

      I politely disagree.
      It's not a problem linked with an activity, but with gender : a man defines the whole identity of his wife/girlfriend. Here in France, female soccer players have been existing for years but only were broadcast on television when the national (male) soccer teams were defeated while the female soccer players managed to reach the final. Same went for handball. I still didn't see any tee shirt proclaiming "futur husband of a soccer player" (which would be funny, for the double possibility, as gay marriage has been legalized recently)
      You'll never see a man defined by his wife/girfriend career or activity.

      My only problem is... Why is liking pink bad. Being feminine isn't bad. Just because we appreciate and strive after the beautiful things in life doesn't mean that characteristic is a weakness. Its when we tell kids they *have* to be one way or another, and that one way is bad.
      This guy is basically telling us that girly things are bad and that girls would be better off being more manly and getting boy toys. In actuality- they should feel free to do either.

      @@destineeneville9707 I think he's trying to say that girls toys are usually almost always centered around being pink and all things pretty and cute. And he's right about that because society really presses on the idea of being pretty and therefore successful. Society shouldn't favor the idea of being delicate and pretty, it should focus on girls aspirations and dreams instead of what they look like. And I'm not shitting on being feminine. Girls should embrace being girls if they want to and not have to convert to being boyish. I'm just saying that Russell's just saying that almost always girls are treated to things cute and pretty instead of hobbies, or intelligence, or something else.

      @@destineeneville9707 I don't think that's what he's saying. Pink is my favourite colour, and I'm a hard core feminist. It's about the idea that girl's toys are made with the intent to portray women in stereotypical female roles, which is a harmful message for children to receive. Like toys or dress that only talk about finding one's own identity through someone else. Not saying that wanting a family, or being a stay at home mom or anything is bad, just that girls should be introduced to the same thing as boys during development. The idea that girls don't matter unless married with kids is very harmful, and is definitely something enforced during early childhood development.

    • @karlaotte6787
      @karlaotte6787 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Kardz22 Toys targeted towards girls are often stereotyped to present roles stereotypically connected to women in the past. They can be harmful, but pink isn't the real issue being discussed, which is what I was saying. It's not about the fact that there are other toy options, it's about the fact that the ones targeted to girls do not usually send a great message.

    • @karlaotte6787
      @karlaotte6787 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Kardz22 I was more saying that "girls" toys are targeted towards being caretakers of some sort, which is not the only message to send to children, especially when that is not the message also sent to boys via "boys" toys.
      Girls like superheroes as well but, unfortunately though, till quite recently there were no female superhero toys made so there was that complete lack of representation. Parents more than children decide what to get their children, and if all you see on tv are toys geared to your gender being dress up, or princess, or taking care of children, would you not think that society was expecting that of you? I know I felt that, even though I didn't like many of those toys personally.
      Princesses are also stereotypically bad, because in society, they are often represented as weak, or waiting around for a man, etc. none of which are good messages for children to be receiving. (almost all movies or books involving princesses portray this message)

      @Safia Kabiri , that would depend on definitions. To me, "toxic masculinity" is any aspect of the societally approved masculine gender role that is detrimental. An example would be the fact that men are not taken seriously if and when they complain about sexual harassment or sexual assault. Funnily enough, this is something that many anti-feminists complain about while simultaneously denying that "toxic masculinity" is anything more than a smokescreen for misandry. You can claim that it doesn't exist because that fits your narrative but at least some of the things that people mean when they use the term certainly do exist.

    I find this interesting because when I was little I would always get Barbie and Bratz dolls and horse and princess related toys for birthdays and Christmases. Yet I never really played with those toys. The only time the Barbie dolls were removed from their packaging was when my cousin came ovr and she played with the dolls. Eventually I gave them to her. The gifts I liked getting and would actually play with were the 'boys toys', the science experiments and the cool contraptions and the little engineering project things. My favourite books, then and now in my later teens, have always been the ones targeted at boys. Action and adventure and science fiction have always been more interesting to me than books based in the real world, or focused entirely on romance. In fact, I've developed a habit of seeking out 'boys books' (if they're seperated), when I go to read, because at least I know I'll find those interesting and enjoyable to read. I remember reading a book one time, and in the back was a list of 'books for boys', and I went and read and loved every single series on that list. Having no gender specific toys (and books!) would be an amazing accomplihment, and would have stopped me getting so many toys when I was younger that I had absolutely no interest in, and fueled my love of and interest in science even further

      Yep - I think I asked for a Cabbage Patch Kid one Christmas primarily because it was a THING. It was what EVERYONE wanted and I just felt left out not having one too, but when I was by myself I never did a single thing with it besides sit it on the shelf. What I REALLY wanted from my list and was SO excited to get was the little model Interstate Trucking set with the pipe loader and gravel hauler that actually collected the pipes and gravel and dumped the load at the other end of the run. I would prefer playing after school with the family that had three boys because they had cool stuff like electronic handheld games, model cars, and Voltron Lion ships and TRANSFORMERS while my girl friends all had Barbie stuff. Ugh. Though I did have exactly ONE Barbie, that was just so I could play with her fancy remote controlled corvette and her horses - I liked Barbie's toys better than Barbie! I was lucky though, because my mom was a biology teacher who was big on any kinds of educational toys that helped you learn things, and my favorites were puzzles and chemistry sets and microscopes and things to make and mix and build and BOOKS. Books were a solid hit no matter what.
      And I wouldn't sit through a second viewing of Titanic even if you paid me, as it was eye-rolling enough the first time around...

      This says more about your parents than you. Your parents either intentionally refused to give you toys they knew you liked or you liked the dolls at one time which is why they got them for you. This also proves another point, that many girls like Barbies and other dolls which is why manufacturers keep making them! Nothing wrong with girls who like girly things, I am also a science bod but these days I find more girls seem to "identify" with this non-gender stereotype because it's fashionable than because they actually mean it. Who cares if you like barbie and the mainstream? I know a girl who has always liked Barbie and pink and sparkles, paints her face does her nails, wears dresses and has a PhD in microbiology and worked for Pfizer, the two are not mutually exclusive FFS.

It's so annoying all the cloths I want to get are in the boys section blue and green are my favourite colours and the only things in the girl section that are blue are freaking love hearts. I'm also a self proclaimed nerd and all superhero merch seems to always be targeted at boys as I'm a girl I clearly can't like batman or the green arrow or dare devil or the flash. I know I'm only 12 but right now I want to be an astrophysicist yet as a 2-9 year old nearly all science related things were targeted at boys and it took me until I was 11 to be able to propably discover this passion that I had. Sorry if this was quite long but to me this is a serious problem that's too often ignored I mean a gender doesn't change who we are or what are likes and dislikes are going to be what shapes us is how society expects us to act and how it tries to brain wash girls to like pink and love hearts and not science or comic books.

      I'm 17 and I have the same problem. Most of the time I end up shopping in the boy's section of the store, and the proportions of the clothing are often so uncomfortable because they are tailored to fit a boy's body proportion instead of accommodate breasts, which I have a lot of. I'm forced to be uncomfortable in clothing I adore because it's the only way I can express what I like through my clothing at an expense of my comfortability.

      Even if you don't have kids yourself, surely you remember being a child and seeing gendered advertisements?
      I also don't watch regular TV and don't have kids, but I remember vividly growing up in the 90s and walking past the very much gender segregated toy aisle when my parents took me to the store, and seeing commercials of boys playing with transformers that had a bunch of functions and girls playing with dolls that had... pink, mostly. And brushable hair because brushing hair is the glass ceiling of fun I guess.

    • @theawecabinet
      @theawecabinet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Girls like brushing / styling hair and hair products and accessories because thick, long glossy hair is a sign of fertility and health. Female hormones produce thicker hair (hence the market for 'volumising' products). And dressed hair is a sign of social status (you do not scrub floors for a living).
      What feminism is doing by attacking gendered toys and gendered behaviour is attacking the very biological essence that drives men and women.
      Loads of young women are now being pushed into careers and lifestyles they do not really want, only to drop out and have to go back and do what they wanted to do all along .... or hit 30 and panic because they actually want a baby and a husband and now they have 5 years to find one and all the good men are already taken and they have hit the wall and must now compete with women 10 years younger than them..... cue low self esteem problems and loads of cosmetic surgery and botox etc.
      Feminist just cannot leave people alone, they want girls to be more like boys and boys to be more like girls. It is deeply disturbing.

      From your name, I take that you are female. I do not know your age or in what country or area you live. I grew up in the adjacent city from Boston called Cambridge, Massachusetts Boston and Cambridge and the surrounding cities and towns hold the highest concentration of upper degree granting institutions in the world. Here we encourage women as well as men to become involved in a form of education called STEAM. That is the sciences, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. Russell is correct in his commentary that young girls are, practically from birth, encouraged to be princesses and and housewives, and are not encouraged to pursue STEAM as a career path. Comedy can sometimes be as powerful as any speech from the leader of any nation, sometimes more so. Russell opened up a very important subject and I hope it is discussed amongst many people wherever you live.

    When I was younger I loved dresses and My Little Pony but, i felt so unaccepted because I was weird and different for liking things like fishing because it wasn’t apparently normal to other girls my age.
    Now I feel more accepted than I ever was and more comfortable, I hate makeup and the colour pink. I live for baggy hoodies, T-Shirts, Video games and you’ll never catch me wearing a dress normally only if it’s on a very very rare occasion.
    I am still a girl but I love what I want because it makes me feel comfortable.. I’m not just gonna magically like the colour pink or like makeup as well as things such as dresses. That’s stereotypical and I never fit in that way, we shouldn’t ever be defined by our gender or what we like shouldn’t. Let boys wear dresses, makeup and let them be princess if they really want to be and let girls be knights or mighty battle warriors if they desire to.
    Material possessions never made us who we were or defined us as individuals and they never will. We are who we are because it’s just who we are, stop killing equality with outdated stereotypes. Stop making boys feel like they always have to be manly and stop making girls feel like they always have to be womanly.

      from my experience its the complete opposite, females are encouraged to pursue there dreams much more than males for example university degrees a lot more than men, 30'000 more females were accepted into university's then male counterparts (Source - the Guardian). females are encouraged to get careers in IT, Medicine and other speciality courses far more than males are going as far as to have quotas on how many men/female ratio to employ. in schools male students are forbidden and actively punished for doing boys things such as "playing ruff" going as far as banning activities such as bull dog and telling them they cant do something,for example the secondary school i went to rugby wasn't taught in PE because it "wasn't inclusive enough of a sport." and only encouraged the tough kids to play. whilst we're here lets talk about how "weak men" are treated, since you want to talk about society. the biggest killer of men in thew UK under 45 years of age is suicide (Source - independent news) in society if you are a male you are expected to be the provider of the family, and don't have a well paying job, can't support your family you are considered by many as a waste or Un-Manly and being brought up in a society were being un-manly is the biggest embarrassment that a man can be, is extremely damaging and is one of the main reasons why male suicide is such a huge problem. showing emotion as a man is considered a weakness so at a young age we are taught to bottle up the emotions until it get to a dangerous level and it all explodes at once. when i did work experience i worked with primary school kids on sports related basis, the amount of times i saw girls cry and be cradled by the teacher telling them its alright everything will be fine, and the complete opposite when the boys start crying being told to that its just a scraped knee stop crying and get on with it. was appalling. so yes females do suffer from many things but saying they are being told NOT to do stuff in a time where there are dozens if not hundreds of programs going to encourage females to do things and encourage them to explore there career options, yet there are barely any for men. (from my experience growing up in the UK)

      The thing is that while women are encouraged to pursue their dreams, workplaces aren’t exactly pro female. People find or treat women as if they don’t know how to do their jobs when it is a position generally seen as male dominated such as a manager or technician. Men are raised with a sense of masculinity that deprives them from being able to give in to their feelings. I think a problem is that we associate perfectly healthy things as weak, such as crying. We see anything labeled as “feminine” wrong unless done by a female. Honestly, I feel that gender norms and stereotypes have been putting down people for far too long.

      HAHA You clearly have a narrow mind and narrow view of males. And a narrow friendship group. Heterosexual men can be feminine and like feminine things without being gay. ANd being gay doesnt mean you automatically would like feminine things more than heterosexuals. Your toxic ideology is the reason many heterosexual men and gay men (and a lot of males) feel they have to suppress their expressions. Stop policing EXPRESSION. The reason why more young men commit suicide is because of the policing of masculinity-and the one way men should be. Life is more ambiguous than you would like.

    totally agree!!! for those people that think it's no big deal, it is! these things mess with people's mind!! and all the gifts for a girl is likely some of these! let's be reasonable, building legos or bridge sets and playing with trucks or remote ctrl planes are much more fun than playing with a barbie!!! come on!!! i'm a girl, i am comfortable and proud of being a girl, i like looking feminine, but i always hated being what society told me was 'girly' as a kid, which made my parents worry that i had 'wrong gender identity' or was gay (i'm chinese, my parents grew up in extreme poverty without any merchandise culture, so they could only reference tv commercials and trends). i wasn't. i just didn't care about grown-ups awwwing 'omg she's a pretty girl she'll become a beautiful woman', and thought barbie looked weird and those bow ties and hairclips and glittery blinky pink things tacky and redundant. i didn't want frivolous tassels on my bike and i didn't want disney princesses on my water bottle and backpack. and now that my parents think back about it, i was on point. my only problem was that i had a better sense of aesthetic than most toddlers.. oooo my mom was worried that i was a weirdo...

    Thank you Russell. I spent 35 years teaching in a girls' school, taking every opportunity to build their self confidence. It was an uphill battle, and one that I rarely won. It was so ingrained in their thinking that most would shy away from anything that might make them appear less "girlie". Too many thought that you could not be feminine and have a non-traditional career. I've nothing against girls having toys, etc., that are pink and sparkly, but why can't some of the manufacturers (and the families who buy these things) realise that a super hero doesn't have to have to be super macho. Feminine and super hero are not opposites. Feminine and engineering are not impossible.

    Sorry, I paused half way through. Tell me if he says anything in my comment or makes an argument against it.
    But boys toys have the same problems as girls.
    ... Not as much, but they still have problems.
    In today's world we say we want gender equality, but at the same time we're contradicting ourselves with how we go about it.
    You've seen many a time where it is socially acceptable for a girl to like boy things. Like Transformers, Star Wars, cars, superheroes and so on. Everyone is ok with girls liking these things.
    Now let's look at the opposite. When a boy like girl things.
    That's a problem todays world seems to ignore. And its not the boy liking dolls, fashion or the color pink that's the problem. Its people's reactions to it. Hell, how they react to when even girls like it.
    Why are the 'girly' things considered bad? It doesn't make you weaker. You can like dolls, fashion, makeup, ponies, and so on and still like superheroes, video games, trucks, sword fights and more 'boy' things.
    Hell, on the thing of fashion, girls can now wear pants, cut their hair short, and be sloppy and lazy. They are considered cool and proud most of the time. But if a boy dares to wear a dress, make up, heels and so forth, they are considered 'weird'. And should be ashamed of themselves.
    We spend so much time focusing on girls and women getting 'equality' and doing what boys do that we've completely forgotten about boys and men wanting to do what girls do. That isn't equality.
    Idk if I explained this right but I did my best.

      @The Whisperer of Death
      I am a feminist myself, and I totally, utterly, on all counts agree with you. Can you imagine a world where a girl wore boys' jeans, walked out of the door and was called a drag king? But at the same time, I think it's time we began seeing things not just as boy things that a girl can like or girl things a boy can like, but as non gender specified full stop. Like, we should look at a Luke Skywalker figurine and think "that's something for people who like starwars" instead of "that's a boy thing, but girls can like it too". So I agree totally with you, but just to add to your point 😁

    • @Ceduria
      @Ceduria 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What you're saying is absolutely true, but you yourself said that girly things are considered week and shameful - it's true for both men and women in many contexts. So the true goal of most feminists, getting rid of the many biases towards women specifically, is the primary way to ensure that everyone can enjoy "feminine" things without that automatically meaning "weak".
