I have always been amazed by the intelligence of these creatures. Does it come to the boat to scratch the barnacles off it's head? To investigate these strange yet familiar creatures? Or just to play? Maybe all three and more. We often speak about how smart cetaceans are, how quickly they learn when we decide to teach them. I'm not a green peacer, Peta or the like but it strikes me that perhaps we should try and learn from them. Because they are far more compassionate and forgiving they we are. Maybe this is there way of patiently saying "c'mon I know you can do it, I believe in you. See! Your getting there!" Just a thought..
Those are all great questions.. I think they can even identify our behavior by the tones the kids were calling out. For instance, when they were excited to see the whale, they all yelled out with high pitch and that whale came over asap because they new some good scratching was going on...
After all man has done to these wonderful whales, they are now beginning to show us trust in us. I hope man doesn't ruin that trust. We can learn so much from them.
@@Swaggmire215 Stupid? Yes, considering we have ones like you around. have you ever even tried whale? It's delicious, like a hybrid of beef and tuna. Plus, how are we supposed to live without clean and efficient burning whale oil lanterns?
@@derPetunientopf yeah I was kidding about the lantern oil, but my comments about whale meat are legitimate. I lived in Japan for some time and i had a few plates of whale sashimi and fried whale. It honestly is delicious but i don't think id do it again, I love whales. They are far too intelligent and friendly to eat. Then again i feel the same way about pigs as far as intelligence and friendliness. At the end of the day it really comes down to dropping population numbers, don't want to help that continue.
How awesome is that? To meet a whale! It's going to be a highlight of their lives. I wonder if they wantedd the folks to rub it's tongue. Orcas and dolfins seem to like having their tongues rubbed. I would be worried they would grab hold. I know it was exciting, but I wish the two ladies had not screamed like banshees at the poor creature. Their hearing is very sensitive. I'm surprised the racket didn't scare the whales off. A little self-restraint would have been difficult, but a good idea.
Jill Sacsayhuaman someone has mentioned ,and I agree, that most whale videos have females screaming in the background either out of fear or delight ...
i'm a little bummed at the over-exuberance of the tourists, even though i can completely understand it.... when i worked at the aquarium of the pacific, we made sure all our guests knew to use the "two finger gentle touch" with the stingrays and anything in the touch pools... the very least we can show these magnificent, sentient creatures is our respect and admiration. she was kind enough to come to you - no need to shout profanities or scream or hastily shove your hands in her baleen. just be grateful and calm and cool. then, go home to your friends with the proof and freak out on them!! :P
It's enjoying a scratch. Those barnacles are probably itchy for it. You can see it rubbing it's face on the hull of the boat and seems to enjoy being rubbed. You can see it's eye closing at it scratches. Think about it there likely aren't many things it can go and scratch itself on every day. It reminds me of a cow trying to itch itself on a post or cow brush. Beautiful.
I think the whale had two kind requests: 1. Please can you get rid of these annoying barnacles for me? Unfortunately I cannot by myself. It seems that it was also scratching on the boat. 2. If you don’t mind do you have also something to eat for me? Me hungry 😂 I love whales. They are incredibly smart and good giant.
Magnificent creatures. We should live in harmony with the nature. Technically, a human species is a herbivoire and the occasional predator(though we've pushed the "occasional" through the roof). Animals don't have the records or written history, all they have is a an instinct or what their parents have taught them. That is, if something is not trying to kill them outright - they get curious. And while it might be nice on the tourist trip it might end up badly when they stumble upon the whale hunters(though I am not sure if that is still practiced). I always thought of it that way - I won't hunt more than I have to, then again a wolf doesn't concern itself with preserving the wildlife. Then again, we are smarter and better organised. Humankind is a a very big pack of wolves. But, we can undestand the damage we are causing to the wildlife and thus we can act different. It's a big loop of if's and why's but there are moments like those that makes us wonder if domination is a path to follow. Then again there were moments (mostly in the past) with people being hunted by the local wildlife. In conclusion - being a human is a blessing and a curse.
No, it is not ok. The barnacles and whale have a symbiotic relationship, so neither is harmed by them living on the whale. Removing them by hand would cause wounds.
@@Discordia5 in their symbiotic relationship i can see what the barnacles get, a nice home to feed from, but what do the whales get out of it? Oh and there's this great video floating around that shows a whale slamming against the side of boat and scrape off quite a few large barnacles from off its hide. From that I kind of get the impression that even whales don't like barnacles. But honestly I hardly don't know anything about whales--I live in a freaking Desert.
Greg E The whales get 2 things...the barnacles help defend their “softer” parts from bites and wounds when being attacked from sharks or Orcas (pretty much the only 2 natural predators these brings have) as well as helping the males when fighting during mating season. Having the barnacles up by the face and on top of the head kind of serves the same purpose as rhino horns...tusks etc on other male animals.
The guy kissing the whale is nasty. This whale looks sickly, and his first reaction is to put his lips on something that has literally been touched by all sorts of creatures? 🤢🤢🤮.

That's why it was rubbing on the boat. It wants those barnacles off.
But maybe it would hurt more if they get ripped off? idk
@@derPetunientopf it wouldn't, they normally get the help of seagulls to do it.
@@derPetunientopf It feels reliving from what I understand to them. Like having a stubborn hang nail come off or popping a big zit.

I love grey whales they are beautiful creatures

There are baleen whales and then there are toothed whales, this one has baleen
Baleen is made of the same fibers as fingernails. They are bottom feeding whales that sift crustaceans out of the sediment.
