The first Chinese translation of Carson's work - Short Talks - came out last year (I'm from Hong Kong); I was struck by its originality+depth. Now I gonna read Red and Beauty of the Husband, probably in both languages. Thank you for your presentation :)
So glad you enjoyed it, and what a treat to have such an engaged analysis (just in time to watch it before Christmas dinner). Lovely examples you pick, I'll add page 94. "Thank you, said Geryon and bit into an olive. The pimiento stung his mouth alive like sudden sunset. He was hungry and ate seven more, fast. Smiling a bit Lazer watched him. You eat like my daughter. With a certain shall I say lucidity. How old is your daughter? asked Geryon. Four-not quite human. Or perhaps a little beyond human. It is because of her I have began to notice moments of death. Children make you see distances." I've been looking for a nice hardcover of that Hölderlin, maybe this is the push I need to give up and get the paperback.
This book is on my next book's list to read along with the nickel boys by colson whitehead and the largesse of the sea maiden by denis johnson. Very good presentation of the book! Happy holidays!
Are you familiar by chance with Jon Fosse's Septology and A Shining. Fosse channel Meister Eckhart, Becket, Dante, and Augustine. Every bit as engaging as Carson. I adore both!!
Great stuff! I think Updike had a nice description of the blurring between awake and asleep but I can remember where. Roger's Version? And Paul West's In Defense of Purple Prose speaks to my soul. What's the alternative? Gray prose? No, thanks! I spy Europe Central and I Married a Communist.
Do you think it was a short story of Updike’s (or a novel, interview, essay)? I’ll bring reading through the West essay soon. I realize that I implied that purple prose was a negative thing, where I intended to point out that a lot of people will chalk this kind of writing up to purple prose and toss it out. (Their loss.) Bingo and bingo. (When will you get on the Vollmann train?)
@@LeafbyLeaf Hey, Chris. I understood what you meant by purple prose. I know what your tastes are by now. I was expressing my general dislike of when people DO use that phrase negatively. I'm over 100 pages into Risen Angels and loving it. I can definitely feel a connection to Vollmann as a fellow writer and his first novel seems to be spiritually connected to my current project on multiple levels. Looking forward to reading more and more of it.
I stumbled upon your channel recently and I love it!! I’m watching through your Proust series now and it made me wonder if you’ve read The Albertine Workout by Carson. If I remember it’s only 40 pages and a fun little read

Nice to have you here! Glad you’re enjoying Carson. I need to read more of her stuff. All my best to you!
An amazing work by the incomparable Anne Carson. 'The Beauty of the Husband' was my intro to her work, a must-read, as is most of her works.
This was my first and only (so far) Carson. Can't wait to keep exploring!

Another stunning selection! Really an amazing little book. Thanks again very much for brining it to my attention. Happy New Year!
Ahhh lovely analysis, the “love does not make me gentle or kind” is a rush of self reflection in such a poetic ‘snapshot’ 😉
Thanks! I plan to do a video on the sequel to this book next year. It's called _Red Doc>_ .
Nice to see you cover Carson. That Holderlin book looks enticing. Happy holidays!
As soon as I’m done with my current read (my first John Irving) I’m going to finish off The Familiar series, then hit the Höderlin.
@@LeafbyLeaf Looking forward to your thoughts on The Familiar.
Dan J. I’m looking forward to it too!
And here I am once again. Seeking more and almost the right Carson to start out with just for me.
This was my first Carson, and I highly recommend it!
This sounds amazing. Can't wait to check it out.
I was very pleasantly surprised!

Happy Holidays to you too!

Fosse is a treasure! I’ve got a video on his Trilogy and A Shining.
Cheers 🍻

Thanks! No, I haven't read that one, but I just ordered it immediately. Anne Carson + Proustiana--OUI, S'IL VOUS PLAIT!
He stood against the wind and let it peel him clean
I closed the book and devoured this sentence
Its so weird you found it the same way!!
Amazing.
