That's Why Escalator Stairs Have Grooves

  • Why do escalators have vertical grooves in them? Haven't you ever noticed that escalator stairs are grooved? Well, they are! But why do these moving stairs look so unlike regular stairs? In fact, those grooves perform an essential role in the operation of the escalator.
    First of all, an escalator is a complex mechanism, and the stairs you’re standing on are an integral part of it. Standing on the steps of an escalator is basically the same as standing inside a clock: you’re right in the heart of things. And the most awesome part is that you’re also standing both on the outside and the inside of the escalator at the same time!
    TIMESTAMPS:
    The first escalator 0:28
    The speed of escalators 1:05
    Escalator etiquette 2:57
    So what about those grooves? 3:47
    The bristles along the sides 4:13
    The longest escalators 4:33
    The shortest escalator 4:57
    What if you pressed the emergency stop button 6:32

    • @ngiorgos
      @ngiorgos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The rails moving faster than the steps is something I've suspected for a long time. But it's hard to notice if you don't look for it. Ideally you'll test it on a long escalator while standing as still as possible

    • @viddork
      @viddork 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never been on an escalator where the rails _didn't_ move faster - at least, not that I've noticed. I sometimes see if I can hold on to the same spot on the rail all the way to the end without having my hand pulled too far forward to stay balanced.

    • @spandexunderwear3630
      @spandexunderwear3630 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tend to think of riding escalators in terms of how I would drive or walk on the footpath. So, being in Aussie, I'd stand on the left and walk ('overtake') on the right... but it was one of the first adjustments I made as a pedestrian when I travelled to the USA some decades ago, to change sides... but in some places in the USA, it didn't seem to matter... I think, because there's just so many people... and they all seem to be in a mad, tearing hurry all the time...

    Here in Australia our shopping centers have Escalators that aren't the stair variety, And the grooves are used to hold the wheels of shopping trolleys.
    By which I mean that the shopping trolleys have special wheels that slot into the grooves and prevent a trolley from moving until it reaches the end of the run.

    I like the flat escalators at the airport where you walk on it and it looks like your walking super fast.

    The escalator moves in a loop? I thought the stairs just disappeared once they get to the top. Such useful information
