    Coming from someone who majored in English a long time ago, it was the best decision for me! English majors have the skills that all employers are looking for -- the ability to think critically, to write, and to communicate verbally. English majors tend to be lifelong learners who can easily train and retrain for many jobs. Writing and editing jobs are scarce. And if you are limiting your job search to a particular geographic area, they are probably even scarcer. So, it might be your job search and not your college major that is the problem. (And I don't mean that in a mean way.) Don't start second guessing yourself so soon after graduating. The 9 to 5 is not that great, unless you are doing something you absolutely love. You are so passionate and articulate. Although I believe anyone would be lucky to employ you, take this free time you have to do something fabulous that will pull you out of your funk.

    Girl I’ve been where you are and I mean this in the kindest way - at this point you need to just suck it up, make a daily schedule and stick to it (including a sleep schedule). And one thing I’ve found with job hunting is that I need to apply for jobs I feel I’m not perfectly qualified for. I think the statistic is something like men will apply to any job they think they have 60% of the qualifications for while women will only do 90%. You gotta widen that net! Best of luck - job hunting is hard and soul sucking.

      @MaggieFulmer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes! Yes! You NEED to be applying for jobs you don't think you have the qualifications for. A lot of people I know that work in HR say that job descriptions are usually looking for you to have 75% of the qualifications listed and not all of them. Most people are willing to work with you on certain things if you excel in the stuff that is most important to them... which they will only know if you apply!

    i know exactly how you feel about the no job thing. what i've learnt to do is because i have no schedule, i create my own schedule even if i'm not doing anything that would be considered "productive" i try and "put it on a schedule" also getting out of the house really helps even if you're not actually going anywhere in particular with any plans

    Feeling unproductive definitely messes with my mental state, so I normally try to break the habit by starting small with a to do list of manageable things I will get done each day. This list can be anything: wake up by a certain time, do my makeup, make X for lunch, etc. Once I start regularly finishing a list each day (and this should be your goal - don’t make a list you can’t finish), start adding more to the list. For me, I get in periods where I’m doing almost everything from my bed: read, work, watch tv, scroll on twitter, etc., which by the end of the day makes me feel like I didn’t do anything when I did. So I often start forcing myself to get those things accomplished in other areas of the house and just knowing I’ve spent time outside of my room can help on the days I can’t physically leave my place. You’re a bit limited by the hours you’re awake for, so maybe starting to reset your schedule can help too.

    It’s so hard trying to find a job I was in the same position as you where I got out of school last April and I only got called in for an interview two times I felt so discouraged. Finally in January I got an interview and got a job in my field, I think patience is key, I was so depressed thinking no one wanted me and that I was a failure but things fell into place eventually. Good luck in your search Whitney and remember to keep persevering. Btw the whole productive thing I didn’t do anything except for take walks and hang with my cats so don’t feel too bad it comes with the job searching haha

  • @wonder775

    I was in that post grad slog a year or so ago. It was very tough!! My parents were not supportive and I was getting more and more depressed, but I did my best to make it better. These are what helped me/helped me make a kind of daily schedule: I went to therapy once a week (it was helpful to talk about my anxieties and isolation to a non-friend or family member who gets it). I picked up a language I wanted to learn and studied for 1-2 hours a day (duolingo, lingodeer, memrise, coursera, all free!). I tried to go to the library twice a week to read, study or work on resumes/job apps. Once it got warmer, I read outside every day. The fresh air really helped. The less I was in my room, the more productive and in control I felt. Job stuff is all a game of waiting so don't sweat it too much. I hope your job search goes well. You got this!

    • @wonder775
      @wonder775 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. I've had a job now for over 8 months, and when I'm not working, I still feel a little lost with all the free time I have. I think 15+ years of school have conditioned us to use all of our time for studying, homework, extracurriculars etc. but now I have time to do whatever I want. Of course, I have chores now. But I also think you're adjusting to a whole new life! Embrace some time daily to explore things you didn't have time for! Learn new things about yourself. You have time for it now and when you eventually get a job. This free time is daunting, but a blessing too! (I feel like I'm writing so much haha but it's something I've been really thinking about lately)

    I just graduated in December and I was terrified of not finding a job, so I took like a workshop of how to behave in an interview, and now I have a job that I love in a company that has always been my dream, so the advices that I think were life changing for me were:
    -Your interview starts for the very first second that you enter the building, don’t be on your cellphone, don’t wander around, say hi to people you see, chat with them if possible, sometimes they will make you wait to see how you behave, don’t act nervous.
    -When they ask you about previous jobs, don’t say the activities you made, say the things you accomplished, how your previous company was improved with your activities.
    -Look people in the eyes when you’re talking and when they’re talking to you, it shows confidence and proves that you’re telling the truth.
    -Move your hands while you speak, according to what you’re saying, body language is the most important thing.
    -Never ask what they think of your interview/cv/presentation, it shows that you’re insecure.
    -Always ask what’s the next step once you’ve finished your interview.
    -Never say anything negative about your former job/boss/coworkers, if they ask you why you left your previous job, you can say that the job wasn’t for you or that it wasn’t challenging enough.
    And the most important thing; not every job is made for you and you’re not made for every job.
    I hope it helps you, my main language isn’t English so, sorry for spelling mistakes :)

    Girl are you me? lol I have been applying for nursing jobs since getting my RN license nearly a year ago and I currently don't have a job and live with my parents. I've fallen in the same trap as you, with messed up sleeping schedule, overeating, bored, nowhere to go. I have a schedule I (let's be honest, sometimes) use: wake at 8 am, take meds/brush teeth/get dressed if going somewhere, clean a different part of the house each day, read, lunch, relax for a bit, dinner at 5/6, cat boxes/dishes/trash, shower, take meds again, read, go to bed at around 10/11. It helps so much to have a schedule, to keep busy, so you feel accomplished.

    Even though I’m not always interested in the same books you’re interested in, you’re so relatable to me! I see myself so much in you and think we’d be amazing friends in person! 😁 I totally understand your struggle to struggle with an English degree and jobs. I actually went back to school and got a master’s in healthcare administration because it’s so hard to find a job. But it’ll all work out for the best. girl, i feel you on this. i was unemployed for 6+ months after graduating with a business degree. i spent 8-10 hours a day looking for a job, applying for jobs, interviewing, etc. looking for a job was my full time job. i literally applied to HUNDREDS of jobs and it was draining - both mentally and emotionally. each rejection feels as crappy as the last. but looking back on it, here's what i wish people would have told me: don't take it personally (easier said than done, i know). if you are getting immediately rejected, it's because someone spent less than 90 seconds looking at your application and resume. if you get rejected after a phone or in-person interview, it probably wasn't *you* they didn't like. it probably has NOTHING to do with who you are as a person or how qualified you are/are not. sometimes, you just interviewed at the wrong time and someone else stuck out in their mind more (that person may be less qualified/have a personality that ends up not fitting, etc).
    yes, getting rejected SUCKS and it always will. but so much of looking for a job is timing and luck and being in the right place at the right time and interviewing in the right order compared to other applicants. but one day you'll stumble into the goldilocks situation where you interview with the right person at the right time and say all the right things and you finally get that job offer.
    and not sure if this is helpful or not, but i graduated 5 years ago. i've been in my field for 5 years and i've stuck with the same company. i'm exploring the job market just to find something new with more growth opportunity and even now with 5 years of experience (i'm pretty sure i'm not considered "entry" level by most company's standards anymore) and it's STILL hard to find a job. i STILL get those instant rejection emails more often than not.
    anyway, keep your chin up and try not to let those rejections get to you too much (i know - easier said than done. i get it. job hunting spiked my anxiety like crazy). just try to be patient and keep yourself busy and on a schedule and eventually something will fall into your lap and it'll be great :)

    For me I find that setting a to do list with STUPID MINIMALISTIC SHORT GOALS helps a lot. For example, I would make a to do list (all cutsies if I was feeling the fancies) like: wake up, brush teeth, make coffee ... and the big tasks like laundry (yeeeeettttt) I would break them down. Like: wash colored clothes, put in dryer, fold, put away, wash whites... you get the picture

    I did an English degree and I felt exactly like you did when I graduated 8 years ago. However, you have skills that are sorely missing from many workspaces - research, analysis, communicating an idea, editing (attention to detail), critical thinking. These are all skills that are transferable to so many jobs. I know it's awful to hear but it just takes time. An English degree is a great background for the workforce. Take it easier on yourself. You will find something!

    Oh girl I get the whole after college struggle. I got an Arts Management and Creative Writing degree and realised I didn’t want to do that as a career. So I took a year off to travel and then started applying for jobs and NO ONE took my degree seriously. I even got laughed at in an interview for not having a “practical” degree. I’m now working in the field I want to work in and getting my masters of social work. It all works out in the end. No matter if the journey to get you there is what is expected of you.

    The song at the end was beautiful. 💕 My advice for you to be more productive is to make your bed when you wake up. My dad told me to do this and sometimes I don’t do it lol but it honestly helps me to have a better state of mind throughout the rest of my day, almost setting myself up for success, or productivity. It’s so easy to fall back into your comfy, cozy bed when it’s messy, but when it’s clean and neatly made it’s much harder to be “lazy”. But when you don’t have anything else to do around your house, or don’t have a car, it’s hard. I understand. Just try making your bed. It helps. Love you! 🥰

    Job hunting is THE WORST especially when you struggle with mental illness but you are doing what you can and that's what matters. You have time, it'll work out. Fresh out of college 7 years ago I had 1 job interview, got the job and am still employed there and I love it. That being sad I am a freak of nature. That never happens. I was at the right place at the right time. All of my friends and literally ALL OF THEM had atleast 20 job interviews (or more!) before getting hired. It is normal. Stay calm and keep putting yourself out there and take names. You'll find something for sure and your dream job eventually. It just takes time and don't get disencouraged by idiots like me who get hired within days of graduating. That is not realistic. 🦒💜

    im going through the same thing! i just relocated to a different state and am also job hunting and its hard to keep any sort of schedule. the only place i go other than staying home and applying for jobs is to the gym. i try and set a schedule everyday. usually i wake up, have some coffee, catch up on youtube videos and then apply for jobs until 3pm and then i go to the gym, after the gym i just chill for the rest of the day sometimes i apply for more jobs in the pm but it just depends. honestly it helps to assign times for when youre going to be doing specific things so yo dont burnout or get bored *shrug*

    What you’re describing is exactly what I’ve been/ currently going through. I myself have an English degree and in the workplace it counts for nothing. I took 2 years off from study. And they were some of the darkest times in my life. I was stuck in a dead end job doing way too much and getting paid so little. On my days off I’d just be in bed and occasionally I’d venture to the kitchen but other than that I was just this really depressed and lonely person. I never went out with my friends. All I’d do is go to work come home maybe eat and maybe have a shower go to bed. I suffer from depression, anxiety and adhd so a healthy sleep schedule is really hard for me. But one day I ended up in hospital and I decided that I needed to actually do something. Even though I was in no financial position to do so, I resigned from my job and I’m now back at university. Doing my dissertation in English Lit. In my opinion a whole world will become more open and accessible to you if you go on to do post-grad study. The beauty of post-grad is that you don’t necessarily have to do English lit, but if you do it opens up so many opportunities. Such as going doing law, international relations, politics and even medicine (which is what I want to do in the future). My advice for you is to get a planner, jot down some goals, set some due dates for when things should be done by e.g. my room must be clean by xyz date. Please please, make sure if you do get another job, that it is a safe and supporting space. My last job environment was very toxic. If you feel good about going to work, regardless whether your bagging groceries or saving lives, then keep up with that job. Mental health is so important, especially in times like this. I think the first issue you need to tackle is your sleep. Sleep is vital for productivity and good mental health. But bare in mind that too much sleep is also bad for you. Once you have a healthy sleeping pattern you’ll start to feel better. I’m sorry you’re going through this and don’t ever compare your situation to others. Sure you may be in a “privileged” position, but it doesn’t minimise what you’re feeling. You need to listen and validate what you feel. I wish you luck on whatever path you choose, there is a whole world out there waiting for you. You just need to get rid of the thoughts that are clouding your view of it. It’s very hard, but if you put the effort in it’s worth it. Good luck with the interview!! I hope it goes well xx

    I feel you with finishing uni and job hunting. I finished the same time as you and I’m still looking for a job. It’s so frustrating and it really gets you down. The best advice I got from an old boss after I lost my job (was made redundant and my boss really helped me out after), was to use business hours to job hunt and do life admin stuff. And after that is you time. It seems to work a bit for me.

    love your vlogs!!💕 i get crabby like that all the time. it’s always really hard for me to get out of it but i find that reading vlogs help and i also love planning. it’s therapeutic to write things down and check them off which helps to feel more productive (for me at least). :)

    hon, you got this. It took me almost 7 months to find my dream job. I was feeling so anxious and depressed after I graduated, and I'm sure it's normal for a lot of people to experience these feelings. KEEP PUSHING AHEAD and you'll find your way soon. *hug* also, I may have happy sobbed at the kitten clips... (I for sure happy cried at the kitten clips...)

    Hi Whitney! Coming to you from Omaha as someone with an anxiety/panic disorder (agoraphobia) and an English degree. When I graduated, I was in the same place you were and it's the absolute worst. Unlike engineering, accounting, teaching, etc., there's no clear first step in a career path for an English major and it's so easy to feel discouraged and lost. But there ARE jobs for us - I worked an office job I didn't love for about two years, but now I work at an amazing company doing a job I love and my English major helped me get it. You are much more put together than I was right after graduation, so I know you will find something you love and will absolutely be successful - we all believe in you!

    Something that helps me a lot when I don't have anything to do, is to have a routine I do everyday. That way there is still structure in my life and it gives me ways to be productive while still making time for the things that are for pleasure :)

    I get mad that I can't drive, but I don't even have my freaking license and I'm 26. I hate relying on people for transportation sometimes. Especially with a child. I give you all the hugs. Trying to drive a truck honestly makes me feel icky because I hurt my dad's truck way back when during drivers ed and big vehicles make me nervous.

    Girl I feel you soooo much with feeling in a really low state because you have no schedule. That's exactly where I'm at right now, and I'm really grateful that I *can* do very little and get by, (like you said, so many people have it so much harder!) but it's also not great for me mentally to literally be doing nothing. I've been trying to read more and more and be more active in the book community until I can go back to school and can't wait to have time off again 😆 You always want what you can't have, right?

    I’ve been in the same place as you. I’d recommend getting on a normal sleep schedule because it will help you stay productive. I wish I just got a part time job to keep busy and get out of the house. I ended up being unemployed for 3 months after school and it was rough. Having really detailed to do lists helped too. If you start out the morning without your phone or laptop that helps too, it will clear your mind more too

    I totally get the driving fear. I was actually never afraid of driving and then a truck hit my car on the highway and it has taken me some time to trust the car again. I think it is good though to force yourself to keep driving around to beat that fear :)

    Yes, for uber kitten cuteness !! They are at SUCH an adorable stage, many thanks for all that great kitten footage ! I can relate to your feelings of frustration and boredom, as I have health issues that make it difficult to get out and move around for long periods of time. I AM getting out tomorrow, though, as I have an appt with my nurse practitioner and I want and need to get referred to a surgeon, so I can get (at the risk of being a bit graphic here, forgive me) my hernia that I have in my colostomy repaired/fixed, it's definitely not a pleasant thing by any means, but it's what I have to live with. Once I get the hernia taken care of, I hopefully will have better mobility, and can have more of a life once again. Sorry I blathered on there, but I'm ready to have something done about it, and pray that I can get a good surgeon who will help me. 😕

    I’m an independent contractor and what helps me be productive is scheduling recurring activities each week that take place out of the house. Like yoga three times a week and I prepay so I don’t back out 😂

  • @avsambart

    It works for me but if I wanna be more productive on my off days, I always have a one hour timer on, so every hour I must change my ‘task’, which could be anything from ‘read’ to ‘exercise’ to ‘cook’ to ‘go for a walk’ etc. So you could try a timer system?
    Another thing I do is a ‘7 Point ToDo List’. I heard you shouldn’t have more than 7 ToDos per day so that’s what I do. I have stuff like ‘finish a book’ and ‘cook’ and ‘finish (insert hobby or project)’. it’s so fulfilling, even ticking off simple things like ‘buy food’ and ‘hoover’ xD
    I hope these two things work for you if you try them!

    I had to take 2 months off of work for personal reasons and it was hard to feel useful when I was bumming around my mom's place. I had to just make sure I spaced errands out to give myself reasons to leave the house. I know you said you've been afraid to drive, but that's the best advice I have. Or try to clean everyday. I guess, since you live with so many animals, make sure they're getting the attention they all need. I'm sure your family appreciates having an extra pair of hands to help with that. I feel you on the job thing too. I still get anxiety when I do interviews. I have one next week and I feel sick when I think about it. I hope your job hunting turns out well.

    In seriousness, I really hope you feel better soon. Lack of routine is the worst, it sounds stupid but maybe devise one for yourself? Even simple things can really help to keep you feeling productive at least! YOU GOT THIS GIRL! 🎉 (also a English major, let’s wallow together)

    Don't get down about the job thing - I know, easier said than done! But I got an English degree, spent 5 months looking for a job in marketing and feeling really down about my prospects, and now 5 years later I'm the Marketing Director at my company. It takes a while to convince companies to take a chance on you, but don't let yourself feel like an impostor. Getting an English degree actually sets you up for so much success and gives you well rounded knowledge and communication skills that are ABSOLUTELY useful in the marketplace and will be extremely valued by your future employer. Trust me!

    • @samanthadalton7878
      @samanthadalton7878 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, my tip to you is apply to smaller companies. They will be more willing to invest in your future than a large corporation. You can learn SO MUCH on the job that you think you're not capable of (and guess what, those business majors aren't capable of it either, lol). Basically, right out of college... no one knows shit... people just think they do. So own it and focus on what you can learn and how to market the writing, critical thinking, and analytical skills you gain from an English degree to the company's advantage.

    • @samanthadalton7878
      @samanthadalton7878 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry one last thing.. lol. Ask the places you interview what you could have done better or what they were looking for that you didn't bring to the table. Then in your next interview you can use those to either highlight what you think the company wants or rebuttal your weaknesses from the previous interview or turn them into something positive.

    I'm literally in the same boat as you. I'm 27 and was very late finishing school with my English degree. I finished up and moved back to my parents and I've been struggling to get a job for 6 months now. I did administrative jobs during school and now that's the only solid experience I have. And I refuse to teach. I supposedly have other options but they just arent interested in me lol. I wanted to get into entry level publishing but I'm not even getting interviews at this point. I'm just applying to admin jobs again but still nothing. It sucks and I feel so unproductive and useless but I'm trying not to let it get me down! We got this :)
