2020-10-26 Cubbie: Out of the Den Overnight! (twice)

- #PandaStory: As you saw in the previous video, Mei Xiang has been taking cubbie for short field trips out of the den, typically after she returns from a quick break to room 2 (the larger room adjacent to room 3). Last night and early this morning, Mei Xiang took cubbie for the longest field trips yet out to room 3 (which is the larger room adjacent to the den). Notice she used the "swiffer" method to transport him in the 1st trip, and she actually carried him out in the 2nd trip (only to swiffer him back to the den).

Looks like she's spreading his scent around the room so he'll understand it's part of his territory . Even though Mei is a laid back mom, she's always teaching.

momma road tripping with cubbie is so cute , dragging him around the floor showing him the big boy den . i cant wait to see him scoot out there all by himself, but meanwhile enjoying the moments of babyhood
I love how she always cuddles him after a field trip. But I think she is telling him it's time to leave the den. Except I don't speak "panda" - so I could be wrong. lol
expanding environments, expanding experiences, expanding horizons. and the mama didnt even go through parenting seminars. just nature, and following the life force and love inside her. ❤️ this is natural life unfolding.
Mum knows when is the right time for cubbie to venture out.
Mei is on a mission, she is so driven- game on.
And Cubbie is so good, hardly a whimper, he trusts his lovely Mummy 🐼🐼
He is getting his horizons expanded! Soon he will be bopping all over the place. 😁 What a fascinating journey this is for me. I always wondered about 🐼' Pandas and now I am getting a first hand education. Thank you! They are both Awesome!!!
Cubbie is getting bigger and heavier and Mei is adapting with the swiffer-carry-combo maneuver! From what I saw today, Cubbie has been working hard getting ready to walk. I think he actually had his hind legs up and was standing for a moment there. It's gonna be a riot once he starts walking and climbing 😊. As always, Doxie, many, many thanks for all the time and effort you put into these fabulous videos!
Oh, I loved watching her Swiffer him through the outer area! He’s seems to be getting bigger faster.

I love the way Mommy drags him and at times carries him. I love when she returns to the den with him she scoops him up then cuddles him🥰

Precious Baby Boy Panda says that Mom is taking him on "road trips". He is happy and not protesting at all. Upon returning, Mother Mei picks him up and holds him close. She says that he needs to get out more. Thank you DoxieMom 19 for this informative video!❤️🐼🐾🙄😲🙃😃🤗❤️

Remember when Bei Bei fell off the rock wall and poor Mei was just frantic to get to him? As a mom, I knew the feeling.
Yes, Bei Bei is quite a character. He got right back up on those rocks. Mei sure jumped into action! Hope he's well in China.

Looks like Cubby baybee is asleep when she picks him up for the trip outside. Funny how she gently drags him around. I would guess she's spreading his scent then? Love this🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤
Seems she's introducing him to those areas, he gets used to the smells, etc., so he'll be comfortable as he gets bigger -- & walks by himself -- to enjoy those spaces! I marvel at her instinct-driven carrying out of steps to help him develop. I wonder if information about these behaviors is written up somewhere, are all panda moms the same? Mei seems to be so extra extra maternal in the attention she gives him.
I have seen some research papers comparing panda moms, but not Mei Xiang, and not referring to this particular behavior.
DoxieMom, I have to ask this. Is cubbie ok? He's been uncharacteristically silent. Is he just maturing?

Judy, I think (remember, I'm not a professional) that cubbie expends a lot of energy when he nurses (3 - 5 times a day now) and scoots/vocalizes afterward. And the rest of the time he sleeps ... and grows. And typically all Giant Panda cubs become quieter after 2 months. Long explanation, but it has to do with how long their (wild) mother would have to forage for food.
@@DoxieMom19 Thanks so much. In the Pandas in the Wild PBS special. They found that older cubs went up trees to protect them while mom was feeding.
I can appreciate that growing so big so fast must take an extreme amount of energy! I gained 20 pounds during covid and I sleep all the time too! 😆
@@judywilson3953 what was sad 4 me is that after all that love & nurturing, at some point they say goodbye. at least what that documentary indicated. I think it was after a year? So different from the elephant that is bonded 4 life with family, (females that is)

Connie, define walking ;) He'll be crawling soon (forward movement, belly on the ground), and you'll see him getting his legs up under his butt as he attempts walking. But around 14 to 15 weeks he should be up and about.

Is there a climbing tree for the cub once he is more ambulatory? Just saw on Nature how wild cubs climb trees for safety.
There are many trees in his outside yard that he'll be able to climb once he's a bit older.
It’s going to be hard to call him something other than ‘Cubbie’.

Honestly, my name for him is Chunky Butt. I just called him that one day and cannot stop myself. It has been a joy to watch him grow over the last couple of months, and especially to see those ears and eyes turn black and to watch him gain weight. Thus, Chunky Butt.

Wonder why Mei took Cubbie out of the den. Was it to show him another world outside their den or to give him an exercise after sleeping all day since they never stayed long out there 🤔.
It's anyone's guess why she does what she does!
@@DoxieMom19 Apparently Mei has been preparing Cubbie for the outside world out of the den. Mei finally nursed Cubbie in the playpen area of the rockwork! It's really a milestone in Cubbie's growing up diary. Thank you so much for your beautiful videos! They are the highlights of my day. I check up for your updates several times a day to see what our Cubbie n mommy Mei have been up to. ❤❤❤
