I live in South Africa and have a beautiful 3 year old intact male Ridgeback. I had many different breeds before him and did lots of research (including watching many of your videos which I enjoy) before getting my Ridgeback puppy. Despite their reputation of being a handful and not first choice for an inexperienced dog owner, I have never found any evidence to this being true at all, at least not with him. He is well exercised daily and is in extremely good condition yet he is the calmest, most lovable dog I've ever owned. Sure, he has his mad moments but they are very controllable - all of this with just a couple of months of puppy classes and some basic training at home. Maybe I just got lucky. I know I am biased but I love this breed and he's the best dog I've ever owned without exception.

I had a Ridgeback in Scotland 30 years ago. Best ever dog. Unlike your stories, he would fetch a ball, for hours. I lived in a rural area. Interesting story: he was off leash on a walk when I stopped on meeting a neighbor. After 5 minutes, I wondered where he was and what he was up to? Amazingly he had herded some 30 milk cows into a tight circle, without once barking ! Every time one moved he stood, turned her back, then lay down. He returned on my whistle. I have always wondered how he knew how to do that. His mother could not have taught him. I had him from 10 weeks old. Great dog. Forever remembered.

My Ridgeback is the opposite of everything you showed in your video, she hates water, she gets out of breath walking around the block, she will play for 5 mins and then back to her resting spot. I had visions of her running the trail while I am mountain biking, not so much. She loves to whine, her way of communicating (pretty fascinating how many different whines she has to communicate different things). She is great on or off of the leashing. She is sensitive, if I raise my voice in the least, she pouts. She is crazy, but we love her!

I'm just a country kid. Worked on all the neighbor farms. Grew up with all the regular critters. Dogs, cats, cows, horses, pigs and all the other farm animals. Grandma taught all us kids what she called, "Critter Scene". With my touch and deep voice, I can calm nervous horses, dogs, and crazy barn cats.
What you have you show with your dogs and how you train, and sort of control of your high energy dogs people really need to know just how to go about just that. You do an excellent job, they listen to you, sort of, LOL. they have a great nature, they are very fun loving. My hats off to you , great vid. Keep up the great work with your four legged kids. However, my heart goes out to you and yours for your loss. The "connection" that you share with them is wonderful. So when you lose one of them it is heartbreaking for both you and you other four legged kid. I'm tickled when you brought in the puppy. Made my day, looking forward to your next vid. Thanks again

We adopted a male, Red Heeler/ Ridgeback mix rescue. Two stubborn breeds and he is a lot of work. Training is ongoing and so enjoyable. He has come a long way, but he is never in public off leash. I love him, but you are correct. Teaching him that I am Alpha has been a journey, and ongoing!

I was looking for a lab puppy through a breeder but the wait list was too long so I decided to try and find a lab at a shelter or through Craigslist. I ended up adopting a Ridgeback from a kill shelter. He was 8 days away from being euthanized and was estimated to be only 4 months old. We've had him 5 months now and he's definitely the coolest dog I've ever had. We've taken him on boat rides in the river and the Gulf, camping, and trail rides through our woods. Although he doesn't mess with our livestock, he did catch a squirrel one day but he's apparently a soft mouth because he didn't hurt it, he brought it to me and put it down, it ran off. We're a very active outdoor family and he's amazing with our 4 kids, especially our 4 yr old twins he follows them everywhere they go. The shelter found him tied to a tree in the freezing cold. We DNA tested him to see his breed and it confirmed Ridgeback, he doesn't have a ridge so I'm assuming maybe a backyard breeder couldn't sell him because of that defect and just left him tied to a tree in a ditch. Their loss though because he's incredibly loyal and intelligent

You nailed it, getting a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy without knowing what to expect may result in a serious fiasko. Failed attempts of educating a Rhodesian Ridgeback result in quite a number of dogs between one and two years of age listed for sale. But as your videos prove, investing the time and effort can be so rewarding!

Omg, I just love your videos!! I used to be the mom of 2 RR and they changed my life forever!! Best dogs EVER!! I knew I wasn’t good enough to train those big boys without guidance and getting trained at training them was the best decision I made!! I became the dog whisperer after that and knew exactly what to do with whatever was thrown my way!! They are sooooo smart and will know if they can have the upper hand so you have to do it right the first time around!! My RR were playful but never like your Penny!! Lol!! They knew when it was time to just chill.....aaaaand they let me know when it was time to go play outside and get some much needed exercise!!! Lol!! They were also the biggest sun worshipers EVER!! I can’t wait to get my next buddy in 8-9 months but until then, I have your wonderful videos to keep me closer to that wonderful breed!!! Thank you for sharing those with the world!!! 🥰🙏😉

Hahaha, so funny!! I watched this last night, and this morning my “relentless and independent” 7 year old ridgeback grabbed half a dozen eggs from the kitchen counter behind our backs and started bringing them into the living room to eat on the carpet one by one!! Hahaha! Life with Ridgebacks is NEVER boring.

I'm on my 4th Ridgeback now - 35 years of Ridgies!. And I've got to say that this one will probably be my last. I love the breed but I'm not as fit as I was and although my girl likes to veg out with me I really feel she needs more exercise and I can give her at my age. It will break my heart to have to say good bye, they have been my constant companions for such a long time. The thought of not having one of these mad free spirits in my life is going to be very tough. Keep up the great work you're doing, you really are the most informative you tuber out there.

I got mine through a shelter when she was 6 months old. Mindy had been there for 4 months. No one wanted the floppy-eared, brown, bundle of energy. I had Labs before so high energy dogs don't phase me. She's been my constant companion for almost 5 years now. She's great, a lot of fun to be with, walks beautifully on a leash, lives with 3 cats, and owns the couch.
I love your videos. Please keep them coming. I see a lot of Mindy in Penny. Thanks for sharing.

I owned a Ridgeback after a boyfriend wasn't able to cope with him anymore. He was the best dog when I was at home and when we were out on walks..the best protector for me and my children...but he suffered separation anxiety and would wreck my home every day while I was at work. He was suffering because I couldn't do enough for him so I surrendered him to the Ridgeback rescue here in the UK. They found him the home he needed. Gunner, you were such a good boy, I loved you with all my heart. It is a privilege to own this noble breed. Best wishes on your journey xx

Great video. I got my ridgeback not knowing what I was getting into when I was in my early 20’s and his owner no longer wanted him. He was a beautiful dog but we didn’t have a clue how to train him and should never have agreed as it was not fair to him. Unfortunately the only people who could go around him safely were me and my dad. He was too aggressive with all other members of our family. He bit a neighbour while my dad was taking him for his daily walk and the city required us to put him down. Poor boy didn’t have a chance, not with our family or his prior owners. Now that I have grown kids I’ve made sure they are aware of the responsibility they have to know the type of dog they would like to raise and how much work and dedication that dog deserves from them.

I started out watching your videos two and a half years ago because I always wanted to get a Ridgeback ever since I was younger however I’d always had a fear of large bred dogs. I had been mourning the re-homing of my 5 pound chihuahua at the time and finally felt a couple years later that it was finally time to get a new dog . I wanted a dog that was very gorgeous ,protective , obedient and low maintenance. So I decided upon a Rhodesian Ridgeback 😂😂. The first 3 months with my little boy where complete hell. I’d never been so overwhelmed , with guilt , anxiety and etc . I kept thinking ive made a terrible mistake , the thought that I had got a dog that I was not ready for made me so very depressed ( however I refuse to give up on myself or my new responsibility) every time I started feeling like I screwed myself And this little Pup I would just sit down take a deep breath and watch some of your videos & my confidence would be restored . Armed with the information that you gave as well as constantly finding out as much information as I could about the breed , I would just try again with him every single day and work on something new as well as keep a contact with the women whom I got him from . 2 and half years later , I realize I never got a dog that was obedient, overly protective and low maintenance . I GOT AN INDEPENDENT, HILARIOUS, NOSEY, INCREDIBLY SMART , STUBBORN, PROTECTIVE, EXTROVERTED ,GREEDY ,INTUITIVE BEST MF FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER 😭💕. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me . Prior to getting him I’d always struggled with feeling like I deserved good things in my life , I always worried that I would not be able to care for a good thing if it came my way...My Pup changed all of this for me. With patience, lots of affection , positive reinforcement, practice ,information, passion , a sense of humor , dedication , a shit ton of PEANUT BUTTER AND SALMON treats 😂 it all worked out .Thankyou for your vids forever ✨

wow! what an awe-inspiring, heart-warming story of what a dog, especially a RR can do for a human, and vice-versa! wait until your doggie is 8-10yo. at that age they know your every move, you know theirs. most daily functions can then be done with no communication at all, except the telepathic communications the RR pack uses when hunting large, dangerous game.....

You are not kidding about the Ridgeback's unique play-style. It can be unnerving for those unfamiliar with them.
At our off-leash park there were three Ridgebacks. When we all got together it was a whirlwind of flying bodies, teeth and vicious snarls. People who hadn't seen them before would tend to be unsettled or frightened, with the occasional "You need to control your dogs" uttered. Only to be amazed when any of three owners gave a casual 'break' command and suddenly there were three calm and attentive gorgeous dogs lined up waiting for the permission to play again.
What is more astonishing about them is how well they seem to know their strength in relation to other dogs, or people. Those same dogs that seemed like they were tearing each other to pieces would allow puppies, elderly or small breeds to roll them over and pin them. And they took extraordinary care around elderly people and children.
I firmly believe that properly trained and loved Ridgebacks are best dogs you could ever share your life with. I know that _I_ will never own any other breed.

They’re wonderful. Two of the best dogs I’ve ever had. They’re not a good breed for people who’ve never had a dog before, typically. They can be hard-headed, as most hounds are. Both of mine bonded to one family member - me. My son was born when we had Nigel. We got Kora when he was almost 3. Both were great with him. I became enamored with Ridgebacks (or at least with Eko) when I watched you two travel around the U.S. That ultimately led me to getting one six years ago. I had just lost a dog, and both myself and my other dog were having a hard time without her. And while I told myself I was getting a dog for my dog, that little Ridgeback puppy was just what I needed, too. She is so comical and smart. And headstrong. And I'm pretty sure she's in charge. She is also the easiest dog I've ever been through puppyhood with. I now absolutely love this breed, and I thoroughly enjoy your stories and videos of your own crew. I can relate to a lot of it. My life would look a little different if I had never stumbled up Marking Our Territory.

this video has really helped along with your other videos. been having a lot of problems with my current dog so i’ve been doing research on the breeds the dna test said he was. it said that he was border collie, australian kelpie, mcnab, american staffy, great dane, and ridgeback. he’s got the border collie smarts with the ridgeback stubbornness. if he decides he doesn’t want to do something or something isn’t worth his time he refuses to do it. you can have a full steak and that can’t even convince him to do something lol. they really are extremely independent and want to do what they want to do.

Amen about the full steak, try telling other treat training dog owners than your dog will turn down food over anything else that interests them - While they smugly demonstrate their perfectly trained dog lol

I love the balanced perspective you offer about RRs. I am on my 5th one -- 4 of which were rescues. My current one - Leo - a 3 year old male is a delightful handful. He is exactly what you describe. He challenges me everyday to be a better person, a better dog-handler and better everything. Truth is Leo is more of everything and I have the privilege, joy and challenge of being his person. After a year of working together training and living, we are best of friends and people often comment about how well he is trained. We are both a work in progress and I would not change a thing

PREACH!!! Not everyone is ready for a Ridgie. I’ve never seen a Ridgeback play with another Ridgeback like any other breed of dog. They are rough and tumble and you’d think a full out brawl was taking place. Nope, just playing. But, as I learned, socialization is a lifelong endeavour as is keeping your Ridgie tired, otherwise they get into everything!

I have had 3 RR's. Will never have another breed. My last female tawny was the most sentient, companionable dog ever. We went to school for 3 years. When she passed O got more condolences than when my Dad died. The time spent early really pays off. Can't wait to find another puppy!

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but I am on my 3d RR, and each time my primary RR got to be around 10yo, I got a new puppy. when your primary RR passes away, your grief is so assuaged by the presence of the back-up RR, that it makes it ALMOST bearable. i.e. you still have someone to run or exercise with, and steal most of your bed at night! and surprisingly, the Senior RR seems to stick around and stay healthy until the pup is fully trained in the ways of the RR. for us, this has usually been about 2yrs after adopting the puppy. once your senior RR feels the pup can now take over all guard and comedy-relief responsibilities, they feel secure passing over the Rainbow Bridge, leaving you in the capable hands of the younger, fully evolved RR .....

I have a 2 year old mixed breed but I swear he is a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He does not have the ridge of backwards hair but everything else about him fits perfectly! I tried comparing him to the Black Mouth Cur but he has short hair like the Ridgeback and colored like your dogs. He is a beautiful soul! I love him to death. His name is Roscoe. I tell everyone he is a Ridgeback. There is one thing about him that does make me uncomfortable because I do not want him to become aggressive. He snarls at the other dogs only when he is eating but most times he winds up backing off.

I got my first Ridgie 26 years ago. She was a quiet, sooky dog who was my soul mate. She trusted me so much, she died at 12. My second I got 6 weeks after my first died. What a difference! She was a wild dingo dog and kept me on my toes for years until I could train her properly. She died this week at 14 and my heart is broken. They were the best girls in the world and I will be getting another in 3 months but they are not for the inexperienced dog owner. They need lots of training and discipline and attention. Not a dog to leave home alone all day. Faithful, loving, inside dogs who don’t bark much and have gentle loving spirits.

I adopted a ridgeback lab mix. At first I was told it was a boxer lab mixed. But my Roxie definitely had traits of a ridgeback. So we had her tested. Her actions were just like what you showed in your videos. She gave my boyfriends German Shepard and blue Pitt no rest. Especially since she was a puppy and they were older. They played together a lot but when the others were tired, they would hide from her. She was easy to train cause we started her early. She loved to cuddle and be all in your space. She even broke a bone in my foot. Sadly, my Roxie has to be put down when she was six. She developed melanoma cancer which affects the dogs mouth area with tumors. She died peacefully knowing we loved her. I miss her so much🧡

Ridgebacks are the best dogs ever, I’ve been owned by lots of them for over 30 years. They are proud and dignified one minute and goofy klutzes the next. Not a dog for the novice as they are determinedly stubborn but their intelligence is amazing. I have had 3 rescue Ridgies, bought by people who had no idea of the work that goes into raising a Ridgeback pup.
I hope I always have a Ridgy in my life ❤️💖

Still have my very 1st Rhodesian Ridgeback, a female red wheaten named Mia Bella Ami (means my beautiful friend in Italian), just Bella 4 short, she's now 8yrs old & have had her sinc she was about 6 or 7 mo old. She is an amazing athletic intelligent loving wonderful dog, she luvs 2 play with toys & fetch all day long, football dog toy is her favorite & she can do some amazing acrobatics & jumps 2 catch her football ~ her othr absolute fav thing in the world is 2 swim, she is a water loving dog, which has been great 4 me bcuz i also luv the water so we can spend hrs swimming!!! She luvs 2 cuddle & she is a really superb watchdog & guard dog, she hasn't been hard or difficult 2 train or work with at all ~ of course iv had dogs all my life, my family's 1st dog when i was a baby & young kid was a female Doberman & sinc then iv had & rehabilitated & trained many dfrnt dogs of my own including a male Rottweiler, a female Swedish Vallhund, a male black Lab, a female German Shepherd, a Border terrier, a Welsh Springer Spaniel, a Beagle, a pitbull & many mixed breeds iv adopted from shelters which right now with Bella i have a small male Chihuahua/Border terrier mix & a medium sized mixed breed that is who knows all what tbh. Rhodesian Ridgebacks have now become 1 of my Favorite breeds, right up there with the Swedish Vallhund, Beagle, Border terrier, pitbull & Rottweiler ~ i also luv terrier mixes & have had a few of them! The next purebred dogs i will be getting is anothr red wheaten Rhodesian Ridgeback but a male this time & a Belgian Malinois as i have been fascinated & taken in by them 4 awhile & am sure it will be added 2 my favorite breeds ~ but i do absolutely luv my Rhodesian Bella, she & my female Swedish Vallhund have been some of my best of my purebred dogs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks r truly incredible & beautiful & awesome dogs & i will now always have a Rhodesian as apart of my life & in my pack!!

This video popped up at the right moment! My ridgeback mix (though her personality seems to be 100% lion hunter) plays very rough in the dog park, especially for the first 20 minutes or so when she is all pumped up from the excitement. A lot of dogs love playing with her for that reason, but a lot of dogs don't handle it so well (not to mention owners of smaller dogs who only see my giant puppy sprint in full speed towards them with frenzy in her eyes). It's challenging to find a good balance sometimes, but we are working on it. So thank you for posting videos I guess all ridgeback owners can relate to, in the good and the bad!

Ridgebacks do have their own unique characteristics and you must be prepared to put in the effort to make their lives fulfilled. I now have my 2nd ridgeback, both have been rescue dogs and close to adult when I was adopted by them so training as a puppy was not an option. My current ridge (ridgeless) was younger when she came to us and also benefitted from my son bringing his puppy to us to babysit, this helped to teach her some manners.
Do not be under the illusion that living with a ridgeback is a one way thing - this is probably the best breed of dog that I have ever encountered; they are loyal, affectionate, intuitive to your moods, playful when you want them to be and calm (most of the time) when you don't.
I have often said that I believe that ridgebacks are more human than canine BUT just like when you start a relationship with another person you have to be ready for the commitment and make allowances for their point of view/personality then the same is true with a ridge - I take mine for walks between 10pm and 5:30am. I am not totally certain that anyone can truly master a ridge but with the right guidance they will accept you as boss.
If you are ready for the commitment, go for it - you will not find a better companion. If you can't commit fully for their entire lifetime, get a cat.

So glad you made this video. And you sum up the breeds temperament correctly. Mine is 8 months old and 90 pounds and is always looking to clown around and run about. But after that he is content to lie on the couch with his head in my lap. Best dog I ever had. But training early is paramount. Thinking of getting another for a matching set.

I took a pup from a rescue that I now suspect has a considerable amount of ridgeback in her breeding, your videos have been the best thing I have encountered in understanding the amazing gremlin I have bought into my life. I have had large breeds before, german shepherds mostly and I am sure she has shepherd in her breeding but she is also quite unlike any dog I have ever owned, she displays a lot of ridgeback in terms of behaviour and appearance and she makes me work harder than any dog I have ever had, I would not trade her for anything. Thank you for these videos they are amazing.

I have a 2 yr, 8 month-old Ridgeback/hound mix. When we adopted him, he was 1-1/2 and had already lived with 3 other families. Loki is definitely a challenge, but we love him to death. He is very vocal, despite my efforts to teach him "quiet". We go to weekly training sessions and he has proven to be very smart and very stubborn! I had no idea what we were getting into but we're up to the challenge. ❤️
