Your standard K98k with a 1.5X ZF41 scope. It was more of a marksman's rifle than a regular K98 Sniper rifle. I had two of these rifles in my lifetime. Both great shooters that I throughly enjoyed. I had and still have a DUV44 G43 also. Another great rifle that if you replace the recoil springs every 500 rounds it'll run like a champ. Have a good evening people!
Having used one of these scopes before at the range, I can say from experience that I would rather have irons in a real situation than use one of these things. Just not up to snuff.
Never saw this before, interesting. I remember reading that when it came to bolt action military rifles, Emler Keith said, the 03 Springfield was target rifle, the K98 was a hunting rifle, but the 303 Enfield was a true battle rifle.
Hey Jim Scoutten!!!!! Glad to see your healthy and still working I used to watch you on TNN back in the ‘90’s on Car and Driver always my favourite host
Sadly, Shooting USA host and respected outdoor sports journalist Jim Scoutten has passed at age 77, following a brief illness. Noted as “one of the most iconic voices in the shooting sports industry”, Jim Scoutten hosted the popular Shooting USA cable television broadcast for decades.Jul 19, 2023
while the ability to mount a forward mounted scope is a requirement of Jeff Coopers Scout rifle. It is not the only requirement. This Mauser is an early step towards the scout but hardly the first scout.
My father’s sporterized Mauser 98 carries a Lyman Alaskan scope with 2x magnification. That sounds like next to nothing in today’s world of 5-25x scopes, but it works well at practical hunting distances. I also have 2 rifles with Leupold’s now discontinued 2.5x Scout scope - an M1A and a Browning BLR. It takes a little practice to get comfortable keeping both eyes open with that much magnification, but your situational awareness definitely is improved. Today, I would prefer a 2.5x prism optic but those all seem to be made for AR style rifles and sit too high over the bore.
I've never been a fan of scopes. They are OK for a sniper ... but for a in-the-mud grunt? They are far too delicate. I think the Mauser would have been better served (and I know that mine are) with a peep sight mounted as far back as possible. The US Army had peep sites on every rifle from the '03 to the M16. In 1970 we had to qual out to 500 yards using peep sites ... and although at 73 years old I prefer peeps having adjustable apertures, I'll never give them up.
Everyone gave Jeff Cooper respect on this for no other reason than he was old and about to disappear from the gun world. The scout rifle concept was stupid on every level. First, what the hell is a scout and why do they need a rifle that does less than an infantry rifle. Just stupid.
I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to have Jim Scoutten tell you he's proud of you.
I discovered/ learned so many interesting facts from these segments dating back to the mid 90s. Thank you.

It would have been nice to have a close-up of the mount.
It was more of a sighting device than a scope. It wasn’t meant as a sniper rifle.

Who better to tackle the subject of the Scout Rifle than Jim Scoutten?
I’ll bet Sgt. Johnnie L Sheep would be better. He’s a class A “Order Follower” who would do anything for his U.S. Government Terrorist masters.

Did someone look at the smaller ZF-41 and wonder what a dot in the reticle would look like?
I like that there are answers to shooting problems, like the last video about low to high target practice.
I took my Yugo 24-47 and put a put a pistol scope on it, works get!

If you need the scope that far forward it means you could use iron sights. Another one of the turn 2 different guns into 1 fail. Like the M14
Enjoyed this episode greatly. Thanks
I miss Jim so much. My dad and I used to watch him.
Un très beau mauser ❤😊
😊❤
Love these videos
RIP Jim.

Like and comment for the algorithm. Ty.
