    Custom reduction drive good for 90 hp.... is this set-up now at 90 hp or is the drive just good for a more powerful engine than it is sitting on? I remember this V-twin being 61 hp or so before, is that still the case? Love the Merlin PSA and can't wait to try one with the V-twin!

    Engine RPM at 75% power? RPM at max torque?

    • @Triple_J.1
      @Triple_J.1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If its an 800/850 by GK Gaokin, its torque is very flat from 3-6k. Peaks around 4-5,000. Same RPM range you will find 75% power. Red-Line is up around 6-6,500. Peak power is 6-6,250.*edit
      There are now multiple redrive/PSRUs available on the market for around $1k each. The basic motors are $2k from china, plus international freight, customs, wait time, and might not get what you wanted and probably cannot return it. So, these small companies who offer the product complete offer a lot of value vs doing the dozens of hours of leg work and CAD work and CNC machining yourself.

    Chip sent the the modified wiring harness, I think it was just a proto-type as it came with no tubing covering the wires. Also had an issue with one of the wires ( a brown one, not sure for what ) was cut and missing about 1/3 of the copper strands. I think their testing guy may have forgot to send the regulator 2 pin connector that connects the regulator to the battery, may have left it connected to the test stand, and the cut wire I'm sure was from wiring an entire harness for aircraft. Anyways, talked to Chip today and he's sending me a new harness when they come in ( First week in December?) So should have the connector with that and I'm getting a new regulator (will send mine back, it works, just had a little road rash, didn't know it till we opened the packaging) And lastly, I finally found the Make and model of the engine and a web site that sell parts, though not as good as what Merlin has. I'll have to modify the exhaust, not sure the muffler is the same (it could be) and the fuel pump is definitely not as good as the V-twin style Chip sells.

      The engine is a Gaokin 800cc v-twin (no through-shaft) and can be had for a little over 2k if you order from suppliers in China. The redrive is from Ace Aviation and costs about 1k + shipping. All up you'll be in a bit over 3k for this powerplant if you can sort the ancillary fixtures. There are a few struts that you see at the top of the redrive that I believe you'll need to make yourself or have made.

    • @diegoandresbustamante2742
      @diegoandresbustamante2742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fhecrewdavid You said it completely right. I did a 850 already some time ago and now working on a 1100cc. Both from Gaokin. For the 1100cc I am doing forged crankshaft and rods, 11:1 compression ratio, 3 angled valve seats, smoothed ports and tuned exhaust and admision for 5000rpm. Internals and new flywheel dinamically balanced and taking into account the properller inertia. Piston rings are cheap, go for a gapless totalseal replacement. Using an epropeller starter/generator system so I can save weight have a better generator for avionics and some additional power at takeoff. Using a geared inline reduction and microsquirt ECU. Nice engines but I wouldnt use them without blueprinting them first. Base engine when buying it without gearbox, ECU or injectors is 1900 USD shipped, dont remember FOB price. With the right setup you can be doing 80HP@5000rpm which will be power cruising setup. As good as a 912, 20kg lighter and at 1/3 rd of the price. But you have to do your own work to get it working right. Turbocharging is really tempting but I would only do it for keeping the power up to a desired FL... since this engines doesnt have piston oil squirters or good enough cooling to overcome more thermal load. I am considering yes to modify the oil pan to increase engine oil and improve cooling and oil degradation time.

  • @georgethompson4098

  • @pylon500
    @pylon500 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    V-twin vs 582?
    I'm thinking heavier instal, more vibration (unless it's even heavier with balance shafts), looks like single ignition, and less power...
    Better get in on the 582 stock before they all go.

    • @Triple_J.1
      @Triple_J.1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if you factor in two or three hours endurance worth of fuel into a combined propulsion mass, you will always find four stroke, EFI to out perform Two-Strokes for power/weight in every case. Then consider on a long trip you must also bring two-stroke oil to mix into your fuel, this additional weight must be brought due to the fact no FBO along your route supplies it.
      A Rotax 582 is a good snowmobile engine converted to UL aircraft use. But its a 1980s concept that pre-dates Multi-point EFI/ECU control.
      This setup, as proven by that one genius tinkering Bloke from the UK, seems to have a lot of merit for this type of use.

    Dan, I looked at Aeromarine's website found the V-twin on the site but found no technical information on the engine. So I called the phone number and got Chip, I tried to get some basic information on the engine I was told "It's all set up for the Merlin." When I said I was not building a Merlin but was looking at the engine for a different design it would seem I was hung-up on. I called back and no answer after a 6 or 7 rings I was pushed to voicemail, it's been over an hour and no call back.
    I could be wrong, but this strikes me as Chip is not interested in talking to you unless you are building his designs when it comes to the V-twin inspite of what he was saying in the video.
