From my experience never get the Dakota digital BIM-01-2. it doesn't work with their GPS-50-2 waste of $110USD the Edelbrock version also doesn't work with the newer DB9 Connector.
I’m no longer running that BIM module anymore even though it was working when I pulled it out. Even read speed off transmission. But I am running their Holley interface now and that has been working well!
@@BillyFargon yea I am using provided oil and temp senders with the GPS as a speed sensor works great would be nice if they updated their website to tell everyone getting the edelbrock one what it can and cannot do on the front page instead of hiding it in the manual. Funniest thing the edelbrock pro flo 4 doesn't have any speed sensor or information and thats the reason why they say the edelbrock BIM doesn't work with the GPS as a plug and play.
Oh gotcha.. yeah I wasted a long time trying to troubleshoot what was wrong with my car and not being able to drive it all because they didn’t note a software update for a known issue 😡
I’m not sure what your setup is but with mine I still had to use the Dakota oil pressure sensor. The bim picked up volts, water temp, tach and even communicated shifter position from module on the side of the 4l80e. You still gotta wire your blinkers and other non engine items
An Instagram buddy just redid his outside along the sidewalk with no garage so it’s definitely doable! He had never done it before so I think it’s not too bad.
michaelvaughanpt thank you! I should have paid more attention to when I noticed the problem... just so many things going on at once I didn’t put the two together till later
I just found this So glad you posted this video, I just got the RTX setup for my Camaro and ended up buying the BIN box. At Least if I run into the same problem I know to check this first. I would never associate the dash with the problem you had. Glad you got it fixed.
Motown454 so glad the problem is behind me! If you have a newer Ls platform there is a good chance you are fine. Mines a 2000 and it think the guy at Dakota was saying it was more so the older ones.
If you pull the bim out and it still has issues then it’s not the bim. It will run without it. If your wired correctly and bim still causes issues I would just call Dakota digital
A couple things to note... if you are selling a product that has known issues on some vehicles and it’s only a software update.. then let’s make sure we are only selling those with the proper update. Another thing.. it’s called a catchy title to get people to watch a video... and it obviously works ;)
BillyFargon yeah you’re right. If they knew that when you bought the cluster and bim, they must gave you the correct updated bim if they had it at the time. Very cool project dude. Did you saw the latest Dakota Digital RTX series? I just saw your video where you were unboxing the dash, you said you loved the original gauges. Look at the RTX series for your car! They’re awesome. Awesome car yours dude.
Oh man those must be brand spanking new!! I like it! I would honestly have a hard time choosing between what I have and that. I like the original look of those for sure... but I have really gotten used to the large multiple gauges especially the tach.
Man I’m so glad u resolved the issue, thank god I haven’t had any issues with my setup, I’m running the VHX on my 50 and it’s excellent, the VHX doesn’t have all that Bluetooth and all the data but it has just what I need, I can check my engine oil pressure and temps and transmission temps which is definitely a good idea, I just put a huge tranny cooler with AN fittings and it’s working like a champ, u gotta get ur car ready to roll out and hit some car shows I’ve been going to a few it’s just awesome!
J P I’m so relieved! My engine is a 2000 so pretty early tech. What year is yours? If you haven’t had problems yet you should be golden. I think I just got a random module that was floating around still with older software :/
Mine is a 2000, they said it affected early setups like mine. But supposedly all modules are now up to date with proper software updates. Mine did not have oil pressure so I used the one with the Dakota kit
wow! I am glad I found this video. I now know to ask DD about that BIM before I buy it. I wish they did give a warning about that. Good on you for properly diagnoses your issue. Very diligent.
Great job trouble shooting. Although I haven't installed my BIM yet at least I know what to look for if the same issues arise. My only question is did Dakota offer to re flash the old BIM with the new software?
worldofhurts thank you :) they did say I could send mine back and they would update it. I didn’t want to wait so I bought a new one and then they sent me a return label and gave me full refund when they got mine back. So it was a smooth process :)
My BIM did the same thing. They had me enable boost and disable gear indicator and it seems to have fixed it. Maybe I ought to call an get the updated version just to be safe. I did the same thing for a week, chased my tail.
Rusty Wrenches hmmm... check the software version on it, maybe you got an old version too? I feel like you shouldn’t have to do special enabling and disabling to make it work when it costs this much!
Rusty Wrenches I would definitely call them. They wanted me to ship mine back to be upgraded but I didn’t want to wait so I bought a new one and they sent me a return label for the old one to give me a refund.
This might be a weird question- how long is the ObD2 cable that came with the BIM? I ask because my port is currently mounted in the engine bay and I need at least 5ft of cable to reach the port.
its me I think it’s real close to that length but I can’t say for sure cause mine is bundled up. But also there is some length of wire for the bim module itself to connect to Dakota fuse block. I would think between the two it would reach no problem. I bet if you emailed Dakota you could find out pretty easy though :)
BillyFargon thanks for the quick reply! I love Dakota Digital’s products, but their customer service isn’t the best in my opinion, which kinda sucks because their stuff isn’t “cheap”. But I’ll probably just give them a call to confirm on Monday when they open. Thanks again!
Also I would change the heading of your video to include Dakota Digital BIM issues or LS Swap BIM issues to catch more hits. I only came across the vid being board on youtube and I think it's a great video for all of us LS Swappers to know so we don't go bat shit crazy troubleshooting such a simple fix.
Did you dirty how? You bought a DD dash designed to work with factory Nova engines. How exactly was DD supposed to know when they sold you the cluster that your engine is not factory and therefore would not work with the 1.8 version?
RIcky Rick the BIM module is not for factory engines. It’s for newer ones that run OBD2. If they know something is a potential huge problem they shouldn’t be selling outdated software. Just my 2 cents.
What is the difference between VHX and HDX besides the obvious visual aspect in your opinion? Also with the BIM module do you get readings from the transmission, like temp? I leaning towards getting the VHX for cheaper of course and using the BIM module so I can bypass the sensors.
Mike P the hdx will display more info and is more customizable. It can also handle more expansions I think for added data. It also has Bluetooth where I can customize my dash from my phone which is awesome but I don’t know is vhx can do that. The BIM module is kind of limited to what your engine computer will do. Like my computer is older and won’t give oil pressure or trans temps but a lot of newer computers can. My 2002 4runner will give trans temps so it’s computer specific. The hdx is a good chunk more so if certain features aren’t important to you then save the money for other parts for sure
Mike P I’m running VHX on my truck with a 6.0/4L60 setup i believe it’s an 04 or 05 and if u buy the temperature bim u can read engine oil pressure and temp, and most important tranny temp I also went VHX cause it’s cheaper lol
Thanks guys for your responses. I don’t really care much about customizing colors and things of that sort. As I’ll be keeping the white hot lighting. I’m doing a 2005 6.0/4L80e Swap into my 73 Buick Centurion and trying to keep cost down as much as possible!
I had tried putting a new map sensor in and it didn’t change anything. Once they gave me the updated BIM module for the dash interface I haven’t had a problem since.
If you want to know the problem go to 5:27.
I’m the problem 😂
You just saved me a tonne of grief. Great video.
Oh good! I really hope this still isn’t an issue with the module but who knows! Just check that software version :)
@@BillyFargon I will do that for sure. Thanks again
Miss titled video. That’s a part of hot roding, to me Dakota knew the problem and took care of it.
Mmmk.
I totally feel you 😂 I did a super strange dual sidedraft setup on my nova and it was nothing but problems.
I feel there is always going to be something! Part of the customizing process :/ sure is worth it in the end though!

So with tha bim box you dont have to use none of tha cluster wires
I’m not sure what your setup is but with mine I still had to use the Dakota oil pressure sensor. The bim picked up volts, water temp, tach and even communicated shifter position from module on the side of the 4l80e. You still gotta wire your blinkers and other non engine items
Did you install your vinyl top yourself?
I did not, that’s my factory top. It’s in good shape but I will need to replace after I fix a couple bubbling spots from underneath :/
Ah damn! That top looks amazing for its age though! 😂. I’ve been really into the vinyl top look all of a sudden.
An Instagram buddy just redid his outside along the sidewalk with no garage so it’s definitely doable! He had never done it before so I think it’s not too bad.
Props to you for trouble shooting all that wiring and figuring out the issue!!!!!

The title shouldn't be "Dakota Digital did me dirty" but more like "Dakota Digital BIM firmware issue" Dakota took care of you. Just my 2 cents...
Click bate duh lol
I think title ok.
Besides the faulty version, was it difficult to figure out how to do all that wiring? I'm also definitely going to be asking assistance as I go
It’s not hard and I’m not good at wiring. Just take your time! If you have a diagram for your car it really helps identifying existing wiring.
I don’t see where they did you “dirty”. They knew what the problem was and they helped solve the problem. They did awesome.

Great job Billy! I’ve had that feeling many times with my 3 projects car! When that happens, take a few days to reset and get back at it!
Good stuff glad you sorted it out!

Joey Morris I hope you get it figured out, that stuff is frustrating
What year engines have this firmware compatibility problem? Does your OBD provide oil pressure? Many don’t.
Mine is a 2000, they said it affected early setups like mine. But supposedly all modules are now up to date with proper software updates. Mine did not have oil pressure so I used the one with the Dakota kit
Thumbs up Billy! Love your new shifter man
Stan Mendoza thanks man, I can’t wait to install it and ditch the column shift!

Mike C thanks mike! I think it really only affects earlier engines. But yeah still frustrating for sure.
Do you still have to add power and ground circuits to the control box if your using a BIM box?
You still have to wire the main Dakota box like normal, you just don’t have to do the sensors that come with the kit
Congrats man! Way to see it through!
Charles Clemons thank you!!
I'll be installing the Dakota Digital in my 87 camaro with the DLC connection. Thanks for the headsup. Great video
Art a thank you! You’re going to love them!
Hey thanks for the videos. Does the BIM read oil pressure?
Jose Jimenez not with my older 2000 engine and pcm so I used that one sensor that came with the kit. If you have a newer engine it probably would
BillyFargon okay. I just bought that BIM and haven’t installed it. My engine is 2003 so I hope it works. Thanks man.
Jose Jimenez even if you still have to do the oil pressure gauge it will still save time :)
Way to stick with it. Nicely done
