Revolvers are still king for powerful handgun cartridges. I recently learned that, until the .357 Mag came out in the 1930s, the Walker Colt was the most powerful production handgun despite being a cap-and-ball revolver.
50 action Express actually out matches .44 magnum in terms of stopping power, while 10mm is only 40psi weaker than 357. Magnum. Auto guns have a long history of Matching up to The most powerful wheel gun calibers. Although revolvers are still King so long as 500 magnum ain't Out matched. I don't really see a probable way to do it, .50 cal is the largest bullet possible for civilians allowed by American law, I don't think you can Create an Auto gun Cartridge with comparable firepower to 500 magnum using Traditional ballistics and cartridge Architecture. Perhaps a caseless or telescoping round? After all the cartridge cannot be much bigger than 50 action Express and still be usable, but having a powder load comparable to 500 mag would be difficult with such dimensions, it would only really be possible using Unorthodox Methods.
@@anarchyandempires5452 yeah, .50 AE is pretty powerful, but there’s pretty much no practical use for it. The Desert Eagle is pretty much the only weapon that uses it, with all the other handguns that used it having been put out of production. That leaves the Deagle, which is probably the best textbook example of a range toy. 10mm also approaches modern .357 mag loads, but the original Elmer Keith load for the .357 is a good bit hotter than modern self-defense loads, which trade off some of that extra power for recoil management. You can still get those original loads; they usually are sold as “Bear Loads” and come with 180 grain hard-cast bullets, and those loads are significantly more potent than most 10mm loads. That being said, I like the 10mm. It’s a significantly powerful yet still practical autoloading cartridge, and is pretty effective against both people and large animals. As for the biggest cartridges, yeah, I don’t see the .500 magnum being replaced as the king of the big bore hunting revolvers. There’s been some competition from Magnum Research with their version of the BFR in their experimental .500 Bushwhacker cartridge, but these aren’t being sold in any kind of widespread fashion. In all honesty, I think the only way that autoloaders would catch up is if one was designed around the .500 Magnum cartridge’s pressures. It would probably be a rifle-like gas operated system with a rotating bolt, like the desert eagle. Though, again, I can’t imagine a practical use for such a weapon. The .500 mag often is a range toy, to be fair, but is at least rugged enough and able to be equipped with a good scope to be brought hunting.
@@technologicallyilliterate realistically speaking both .50 action Express and .500 mag are truly only usable as range toys. When it comes to hunting, both of them Are not practically any better at the task than a .44 magnum, much less when it comes to being a bear gun where they both fall far below an Auto Chamberd in 10mm. Or a self defense gun where a snub .357 magnum or Modern 9mm auto loaded with modern defense ammunition easily outmatch pretty much any other option. I mean I love my 10, but if someone breaks into my house I'm Grabbing my P226 not my Delta Elite, those 9mm golden sabers going to have someone just as Dead as those 10mm extreme penetrators but I get twice the trigger pulls before the click of Doom. I don't think you can realistically make an Auto pistol cartridge comparable to 500 mag, the dimensions of the round would inevitably be too long to Fit in a box magazine inside the grip of a pistol...... Although perhaps a more rifle like solution could work, something akin to this perhaps cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Malorian_Arms_3516 A high caliber Auto using a magazine in front of the trigger assembly and grip instead of inside it..... Although I suppose at this point one would have to ask themselves what the difference between this and a PDW or pistol caliber rifle really would be.

@@dankoproductions6475 big deal I've been saying that for years. And all of the other ones that I know verbatim since I've been there from the beginning.
I've shot a 44 mag in the dark. I suggest only loading one round. The target and backstop were illuminated for safety reasons of course. The fireball flash was so bright it temporarily blinded me. I had my eyes fully open and could not see the spotlight illuminated target for several seconds. I had a full cylinder and I was very put off by not being able to see what my muzzle was pointing at while blinded. This is one reason why 44 magnum is not recommended for defensive use, but this can be negated by using low flash powders or factory ammo loaded with such.
People always say revolvers are useless since it only fires six shots and take a while to reload. Well first of all they're extremely powerful so six shots is all you need and second why reload when you can just carry another one.
Hope to not be put in the situation to find out for sure, but I think the report from a badass revolver should be enough to make a gang attack re-think the error of their ways.
I love my 44 mag with a 8 3/8 inch barrel. The ports on the end help keep the muzzle down and the extra weight from the longer barrel helps manage some recoil. The 240 grain does kick a decent amount, but my 300 grain SJHP are an animal.

@@MrSharpsh00ter revolvers have long barrels .38 special can be pretty snappy but like pistols like .45 acp have more recoil because of the caliber and the barrel inch

180gr 357 at +1500FPS in a 7 inch barreled revolver nets around 1000 foot pounds and a very big fireball. While that 340gr 44+p+ will shoot nearly 2000 foot pounds in a 10.5 inch gun. But with monstrously large fireballs...(Chooses both calibres for sake of sanity)
Revolvers are still king for powerful handgun cartridges.
I recently learned that, until the .357 Mag came out in the 1930s, the Walker Colt was the most powerful production handgun despite being a cap-and-ball revolver.
Thanks for sharing the info and also for watching.
Actually prior to the 357 Magnum the 38 Super was the most powerful
Although perhaps a more rifle like solution could work, something akin to this perhaps cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Malorian_Arms_3516
A high caliber Auto using a magazine in front of the trigger assembly and grip instead of inside it..... Although I suppose at this point one would have to ask themselves what the difference between this and a PDW or pistol caliber rifle really would be.

@@stevenklinkhamer9069 that's awesome. I'll definitely upload a video when I get the chance to do it.

44 Magnum is serious firepower!
Indeed it is.
People always say revolvers are useless since it only fires six shots and take a while to reload. Well first of all they're extremely powerful so six shots is all you need and second why reload when you can just carry another one.
I like the way you think!
Hope to not be put in the situation to find out for sure, but I think the report from a badass revolver should be enough to make a gang attack re-think the error of their ways.
@@alansherman8344 😀 absolutely 😀

I've shot all three 357, 44 and 50 cal... Everyday carry for the 357

I know what you're thinking. Did he fire 6 shots or only 5
My 4in .357 kicks a flame like that 🔥 .44 is badass, too, though cant wait to own one 👍🏾
I loved mine had a 3inch 629 deluxe I carried with 44special such a fun gun
I have both, but I love my 357 with my 4 inch barrel and it kicks way more. My 44 magnum has a 8 inch barrel.
I love my 44 mag with a 8 3/8 inch barrel. The ports on the end help keep the muzzle down and the extra weight from the longer barrel helps manage some recoil. The 240 grain does kick a decent amount, but my 300 grain SJHP are an animal.
I love both, but my arthritis has gotten to the point. 357 is less painful.

@YukonJack next time try it with 240 grain ammo. The recoil is significantly smoother, or if you really wanna enjoy it, shoot 44 Special out of it. The 44 Special recoils less than a 9mm. Super smooth!
@@MrSharpsh00ter the buddy i was with said the same thing about the specials. And still probably the most effective... for a carry weapon tho... it'd almost have to be a snub nose if concealed, however... I've owned both calibers over the years and IN MY OPINION, .357 mag would be my choice for carry... 44 for hunting and more serious endeavor.
I agree. A 2"or 3" 357 Magnum would make a good carry gun and the 44 would be a good side gun for hunting
Not much more recoil really. Store bought 44 Magnum is pretty under powdered too so you could probably get a low grain 44mag and it would be the same as a high grain 357
@TheWeekendShooter308 that's right. The 240g 44 mag actually shoots really soft. Possibly softer than a high-powered 357 mag.

@@yuvgotubekidding I'm glad it did. Thank you for watching!
.357 has the same recoil as like a 10mm or a .45 acp .45 has a bit more almost like the .44 magnum
My experience is that the Magnum cartridges have more kicks than anything else, but it also depends what kind of ammo you are shooting and what gun you shoot it out of. Those can make a difference too.
@@MrSharpsh00ter revolvers have long barrels .38 special can be pretty snappy but like pistols like .45 acp have more recoil because of the caliber and the barrel inch
@@Alexander.alhaidairy yes, all those things make a difference how a gun would behave and the recoil would be.
It depends on the gun. A steel .45 pistol like a 1911 feels like it has less recoil than the .357 Magnum. The lighter plastic .45 pistols have nearly the same recoil as .357 Mag.
@cgsimons1187 yes, I agree, the gun and the ammo make all the difference.
