Digging for Geodes at Jacob's Geode Mine

  • The one where I record a video about digging for geodes and only actually record two minutes of digging and instead make it all about my fear of phone calls.
    I went to Jacob's Geode Mine in Hamilton, IL despite driving 5 hours thinking I was going to Sheffler's Rock Shop. The rain changed some plans, but I still had a great time and brought home literally hundreds of shiny rocks.
    I always sound like such a shill for Estwing but I've never loved a hammer until I got an Estwing framing hammer for Christmas two years ago, so they have a special place in my heart.
    If you would like to support future adventures, some of these geodes are available for sale on my website: rockhound.in/p...

    Awesome video and digging in the mud looked like fun. You got some nice size geodes and hope they turn out well. I polished geodes before and they are tough to polish. Luckily, my parents had a lap wheel. It took the saw marks off and then I polished them on their Diamond Pacific Titian (awesome machine). I wish I could have dug there, I have my large est wing pick (super nice), don't leave home without. Again, good video. I need to get back Vlogging my Rockhouding trips.

      Oh man, I’m so jealous! I’ve polished a couple with my disc sander just to see if I could, the elbow pain was not worth it but they turned out pretty shiny!

    We were there yesterday and thanks to a rockhound that was there who showed us what to look for we filled a 5 gallon bucker out of one hole I dug. We spent the night in Fort Madison at the Kingsley Inn. Incredible place! Can't wait to go back.

    I think the white powder inside is kaolinite. Lots of them rocks you crack got that white powder in em... pretty sure they call em crack rocks 😂 JK but I do think it’s kaolinite

      odds are calcite... kaolin is pure aluminum silicate or high end clay for pottery(the clay was yellowish in the area). i've collected tons of geodes in illinois, calcite will be the most common thing in them aside from quartz. the rarest ones will have hydrocarbons(crystal form of oil) inside and can be very valuable

    I just drove 5 hours west to Hamilton IL to dig at Vicker’s Geodes (near Jacob’s) a couple weeks ago and i didnt meet them they were super nice even though i waited til the last minute to call and message they let me wander in and leave money in the box on the table !!! There was a lady there who had nothing to do with it who tried scaring us off though and was very mean and gave me a panic attack and i almost turned around because i thought i wasnt allowed there as she was saying she owned everything and wouldnt say much else - Just know if u go she has nothing to do with anything 😂 im super glad i didnt let her scare me off because i found some super gorgeous treasures at Vicker’s!!! We should dig together sometime if ur interested :)

    Get yourself an estwing paleo pick or an apex pick. You will be able to move a lot more dirt.

    lol these comments, so many people trying to get rock digging dates lmao. rule #1 never tell anyone your spots. you worked too hard for it, i know spots you can just back up and fill yer truck up and drive off. There is a few locations you can dig some crazy rare and valuable ones though

    What kind of saw is that? Been thinking about getting one but don’t really know what to look for, how much to save

    • @jakestarr4718
      @jakestarr4718 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its a tile saw, you can buy a cheap one at harbor freight, but make sure you splurge on a nice $90 blade, keep your pump filter clean.... about it

    Unfortunately the 2024 season will be Jacob's last year open !!! The deposit of geodes is almost gone, he told us this weekend that if we want anymore from his place, we had to do it this season because he was closing it up at the end this year 😔, he had a good run he said, 18 years... He is a nice , laid back kind of guy, I'm glad we had the honor of meeting him and getting a couple of buckets of awesome geodes... It was HOT and HARD work, but was fun and hopefully we will get back this fall before he calls it quits !!!
