We are Ten Years Old today!
On the 10th of July 2006 Cambria band lined up at the back of Mold Town Carnival parade. Wearing just black jeans and T-shirts we stood in nervous anticipation. How would the crowd react to us? We only knew a couple of drum rhythms, the drums were old or for beginners and we had no musicians. There was only a handful of us....but we did have the 3 flags of Wales, the St David cross; the Standard of Glyndŵr and the Red Dragon. We also had an ace up our sleeves in the brilliant John Jenkins "Tipping" (Lead drummer) for us.
The crowd that lined the streets of Mold that day gave us a rapturous reception and cheered us on up the hill to the Rec where they followed us in and proceeded to tell us how well we'd done. The cast was set and that reception sent us on our way to become the Cambria band that we are today.
Things have changed along the way. We have had many ups and some downs. We have grown into a full pipe (flute) and drum band with glockenspiel. We have a uniform of Welsh Cilt made in Wales from Welsh wool. We now also carry the standard of Flintshire presented to us by the leader of the council. The Red Flag of the workers; The black flag of mourning and the Welsh Pride flag.
Along the way, Cambria band has had the honour to play for both the Rugby and Football National teams. played at local, national and International Eisteddfodau. Performed teaching workshops in numerous clubs, groups and schools. Helped form and start carnivals and fetes all over Wales. Has lead many Protest marches for lots of worthy causes.
We have performed to welcome the governments or representatives of Ireland, Bangladesh and Portugal and we have represented Wales at many International events. We played in front of live world wide Tv audiences of millions opening Bolesworth International Horse show and The Wales Round of the World Rally Championship, marching the cars over the famous start ramp.
There is hardly a town or village in Wales that hasn't had the sound and sights of our marching band parade down its high St at some time since 2006. Our proudest achievement is having been involved in countless historical events and parades, some are annual like the Liberation of Hope event; Aberth Abergele; Owain Glyndŵr day and Cilmeri. Other notable historical events were 100 years since the first Irish POW arrived in Frongoch following the 1916 Easter Rising. We raised the red flag in Merthyr to remember the Merthyr Martyr Dic Penderyn and Llanelli council had us parade through the streets to mark 100 years since the Llanelli Riots. We played on top of the Tryweryn dam to mark 50 years since the MAC campaign against the drowning of Cwm Celyn and we've unveiled countless plaques to Welsh battles and important events in our nations history.
As well as all these historic occasions and fun days like carnivals and fetes we have been honoured to have been invited to share peoples special days like Weddings, Birthdays, Anniversaries and christenings. Our reputation for professionalism and patriotism has meant we have been asked to perform the last act for someone and send them off in their funeral or wake. It is a honour every time we are asked to perform such duties.
Even The First Minister of Wales has recognised our achievements over these ten years and sent us a letter of congratulations.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank fellow founders John Jenkins who has passed on his great wealth of drum skill and Andrew Burgess who has since left the band but who helped set us up for the future.
I'd like to thank each and every member of Cambria Band both past and present for being a part of our history and for enabling us to serve our community and country.
Every member that has played an instrument or carried a flag or simply been there to support us has done so as a volunteer.
We hope we've promoted our welsh culture and tunes along the way!
Diolch, thank you our supporters for following us and encouraging us !
