- In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrators James Braithwaite and Alex Kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short and won the 2009 Emmy for 'New Approaches' (making it the first film to win an Emmy on behalf of the internet).
This is almost the coolest thing i've ever seen in my life.
Gosh - John Lennon had a brilliant mind. I hope he still exists somewhere.
Your listening to him!
For him to take time to talk so brilliantly and and in such an un-patronising way to a 14 year old was truly wonderful. This film should be broadcast on primetime television everywhere. Utter magic.
absolutely! That is the first thing that hit me about this
This film was nominated for an Oscar
exactly, thats the kind of thng a humble person will do. Without humility we are nothing, and thats what made john a great human been. That over everything else
2:40 - "We're all violent inside, we're all Hitler inside, and we're all Christ inside; and it's just to try and work on the good bit of it."
Using that quote for my essay about the duality of man. John Lennon RIP.
How did that essay turn out after all?
I wrote an album about the duality of man, but people think it's about time travel. It's on my channel
Changed that kids life forever.
"Whatever you do, just do it for peace"
The inconvenient truth is that it's impossible to remove the influence of a violent entity without violence.
i still laugh so hard when John says "Well those kids sound square, they just gotta get from under their parents wings you know." And a Wings album pops up XD hahahahaha
An unbelievable amount of human wisdom was transmitted in a bit more than a five minute interview. It's as true today as it was back in 1969. Thanks for posting.
It's good to know that youth was using the word "like" in every other word back in 1969 too lol
The Walrus was Paul.
He's right you know
I know that the eggman was a reference to the lead singer of The Animals called Eric Burdon. Apparently, Burdon told Lennon at a party how once he was cooking breakfast whilst wearing nothing but a pair of socks when his Jamaican girlfriend called Sylvia shoved an amyl nitrate capsule under his nose. When the fumes made him fall to the floor, Sylvia got a raw egg and cracked it over his belly. As the egg dribbled down to his penis, she then proceeded to give him a blowjob. Lennon was laughing and then, when Burdon began eyeing up some of the girls at the party, Lennon said "Go on. Go get it eggman".
Paul is dead. Miss him, miss him.
paul is still very much alive,he's the only living beatle. .
Michael Floyd Ringo?
🐞 I Met the Walrus 🐝
In 1969, 14-year-old Jerry Levitan, packed his reel-to-reel tape deck along w/ him prior to sneaking into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto where he convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.

"Help me by helping yourself" wise man, sadly more than likely these views were why he was killed
He got killed for not conforming to Christianity ultimately. Some people are so lost in their own beliefs that they will go against them without realising
What the hell are you talking about?
He got shot by a guy who wanted to be famous. He even admitted it later in life.
@@smnk3 He also said in interviews that one of the things that galvanized the "need" for John to die was his open atheism. This isn't news.
fuck me thats good! thats one hell of an experience to look back on. you interviewed an icon at, aged 14.
I like how "nothing" is written on Canada
This was GREAT! Way to honor a true man of honesty and PEACE! He wasn't always peaceful nor did he ever deny that he was violent-non violence is not the absence of violence-it is the enlightened struggle against the impulse to use physical force-or the mechanical militant force-to enforce your will or punish others who are against your will. This philosophical interview was John at his best responding to an honest and innocent admirer: intyelligent and sensitive and aware...a rarity for John with all the "Al Capps" and "Nixons" and "Chapmans" of the world trying to get at him!
The Beatles and most importantly John Lennon have change my life for ever.
4:55 "...it's a pleasure man. Bye bye. Here's your album. Play that too".
Wondering if he still has that copy John gave him.
Play that to em’ as in play that to the kids who prefer the bee gees
It was johns 80th birthday today, I didn't know it was possible to miss someone you never met..
Just heard about this today!! This is fascinating and touching! Too bad that something like this could never happen today! John lays out his entire political philosophy in this improptu interview that John was kind enough to grant to this young man!
Superb animated video; I loved it!
i love the part where he says they got to get out from under their parents wings and a paul mccartney album pops up XD
Burn!!
They had to take him down,he was dangerous for the stablisment.he was fearless and he was passionate and he had tons of talent.but he still around you know.they killed him but couldn't kill the message, after all he won.he is eternal.and he will keep inspiring new generations.you did it Jonny.
Really fantastic. Interview was great and presentation is terrific. Great work!
Goes to show how cool John was to take time out of his crazy schedule to sit and chat with a 14 year old kid about anything.
Nice interview
Imagine being a fly on the wall at this kids school the day after this happened. 'Where were you yesterday?', 'sneaked into a hotel room and interviewed John Lennon', 'ok Jerry, course you did....' 😂
John Lennon had more profound things to say and thoughts to share than Paul ever had despite Paul being a good musician, it seems to me Paul just never was able to contain that fire that John Lennon continually contained since youth
+Mathew Gonzales what did John say?
+4 Eyed Animation hmm did you not listen to the video? He spoke about the weapons industry in america
John was the more avant-garde, creative, albeit dare I say a revolutionary-minded genius whereas Paul was the hitmaker. Both geniuses in their own way but like... I dunno. It's kind of like the difference between Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl, even though that comparison is not 100% perfect and it's bound to piss a few people off (sorry for that). But it is kind of relevant in a way as well, both extraordinarily talented people but they also couldn't be more different in terms of their personalities and what drives them as artists.
voteZDLR: Maybe a better comparison is David Gilmour and Roger Waters (Paul and John, respectively).
Can you all please stop comparing them? Both were original and unic by themselves and we all can enjoy their beautiful music in peace, there's no need to say that 'this one is better than the other'.
Why did you show Canada when the word "nothing" showed.....rude. lol
Kevin Kraft as a canadian i can confirm that canada does not exist
In austro-german Kanada can also be understood as "noone there"
I was just gonna say that. Typical American thinking. xD
Actually the people who animated and directed this were from Toronto, and Canadians have a sly sense of humour about themselves. Point and case Aidan Woodford's comment in this thread. ;)
Aidan Woodford my name is Charlie Woodford that’s wired
Who disliked this video? Insanity. This video is inspiring not only by what this great man said but by the sheer fact that after a young boy snuck into his room he was kind enough to have a real talk with said kid. No one would do that now.
Speaking from a near life time of experience peace loving is the best way to live and I'm glad to see John Lennon felt the same
One of the best fusions of typography, graphic design and animation that I have ever seen. Fantastic.
That is a beautiful message! I wish people could understand it more! When I talk about John Lennon, people think "Oh right, that hippie from the Beatles..." , but he represents so much more than that!
That was amazing. There are quite a few levels of brilliance in this. Absolutely amazing.
People need to hear this today.
Love this!!!! Love the animation, love the views that John has, great questions. Very creative in every way:)
Brilliant - John was so ahead of his time. He's talking about the holographic universe here, and being the change that you want to see in the world - things that are only now coming into general understanding.
so good
"Violence begets violence" Thank you so much, young Jerry, for having the courage to ask questions and the creativity to record the moment. Thanks to today's Jerry and team for sharing this with the world. Does anyone have the transcript to share? #SeattlePeaceAlliance #MakingPeaceSeattle #AcrosstheBridge #worldpeace
John is just so deep... You just have to love every word that comes out of his mouth...
Still as amazing as the day I saw it at (unnamed hipster film festival)
Icon... I was personally not a huge fan of the music (I do like it and appreciate it), but I am a huge fan of their message. Scattered or not. Bottom line is they pushed peace in their own way and in a big way and should never be forgotten for this. What a loss. Glad he is back in a virtual way and very cool of him to give a 14 year old the time of day after sneaking into his hotel room. You won't find many celebrities or anyone for that matter, that would do this. Massive respect for him.
I love this. John was and is still such an icon for me- I've grown up listening to his music and to his words of wisdom- I think this is beautifully done, and I'm glad that Levitan waited so long to release this wonderful experience that he had with Lennon that day. I think that Lennon himself would be proud that his words of peace still ring loudly decades later. LOVE IT :)
Its funny how what we consider John's words as deep. Its just the truth. We accept and allow all the atrocities in the world. We are the ones responsible. Everyone is responsible for everyone. And how to change it? John did not really have an answer. But his and my words imply taking responsibility for what we accept and allow as the solution each one has in every moment. We are responsible for starvation, murder, rape, and war. Everywhere.
"Girls are, without question, one of the best inventions of the history of the universe. Bathtubs are slightly better."
I sure do enjoy your wit.
it's weird how you follow your mind with the intention of finding something that really has meaning and content, and out of all places i end up here, giving me all the answers i wanted from before i searched for it...
this is incredible..
Let's all piss peace! This was really uplifting for me. Bravo!!!
I love that they ever so subtly labeled Canada "nothing"
"DO ANYTHING FOR PEACE". John Lennon knew.
And we're all in this together...imagine...if we worked together.
Lennon's answers in this are just astounding. The animation and pictures are brilliant, reminds me of the video for Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out, the old school diagrams and everything.
"There seems to be a profound lack of people who fully appreciate the benefits of whatever it is that keeps people from kicking each other in the balls."
So true.
I love John and I miss him. He was so very powerful. Amazing man. Love his message. Love his music.
Thank you for posting.
that was fucken amazing! my heart is pounding from the epicness!!!!
RIP JOHN - Gone but never forgotten !
Wonderful!
If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.
-George Orwell
Aww Canada was labeled "Nothing" lol
that could easily be done in after effects.
I remember seeing this when it was nominated on the Oscars. Combines two great things, John Lennon and Animation. I should do this, I've stayed at many hotels in Toronto with celebrities. I met Lou Ferrigno (Hulk), some sci fi tv people, Dave Thomas and his mom, the Jonas Brothers were staying there too, but I was glad I didn't meet them.
Paul was the walrus. ;)
“I was the Walrus but now I’m John”
my dad is Jerry Levitan i'm so proud of him!!
If you look long enough at anything all the answers are there, within it. Brilliant.
@tomyruler Lennon said: "It never dawned on me that Lewis Carroll was commenting on the capitalist and social system. I never went into that bit about what he really meant, like people are doing with the Beatles' work. Later, I went back and looked at it and realized that the walrus was the bad guy in the story and the carpenter was the good guy. I thought, Oh, s--t, I picked the wrong guy. I should have said, 'I am the carpenter.' But that wouldn't have been the same, would it?"
John would definitely smile at this beautiful piece of art. How could he not? "WE ALL SHINE ON, LIKE THE MOON, THE STARS, AND THE SUN"
I like the line "we all got a little bit of Hitler in us and we all got a little bit of Christ in us as well. we just have to work on the good parts." So true
Lennon does say a lot of great stuff but so little people are appreciating the astounding animation and effects
Now John was a person that had plenty of talent unlike 99.99% of the acts today
Increíble. Alucinante. Su voz, la constancia en cada letra y su fuerza en cada palabra, hace que este audio te transporte a cualquier época. Gracias a la juventud, y a la madurez.
I am working on a video of the Paranoid Hoover vs. Rock N Roll, Peace Activists and Lennon. If he were alive today, i highly believe he would be protesting like i still am today. Those that don't stand for something will fall for anything. Love and Miss you John.
I had a pastor talk to me about how" we need war if we believed in Peace how would we defend ourselves" to which I said "if everyone believed in peace then we wouldn't need to defend ourselves" Which is true people are so naive sadly most of them are fundamentalists
means chapman didnt murder lennon because he was hurt by his song imagine and its lyrics "imagine no religion"? i read something like that. so chapman was ordered to kill lennon my mkultra? im sorry i cant really understand your perfect-english answer because im austrian :D
where do you know this from?
love the last word, 'peace' at the end
I met this guy on Oct 9th, and when he says that he snuck into Lennon's room, he ain't kidding! He dressed up as a reporter, borrowed his brother's and sister's camera, ditched school, all for the chance to see Mr. Lennon.
OMG! I'm so jealous!
hahahah
just kidding. John was a genious and the way he and Levitan think are the same as me! I feel like I'm the 21st century John Lennon!
wow. i feel like a archaeologist. i dug this video . john lennon
4:19 Girls are, without question, one of the best inventions in the history of the universe. Bathtubs are slightly better.
The animation should be the last thing ppl remember from this video...Lennon's message is really something to think about...
I admire how that kid kept his cool. I would have pissed myself being in the same room as Lennon.
that was brilliant and super fun to watch! god john lennon is just so cool in every recording
What a good guy :) any rock star today would have kicked him out, but John has a whole interview with him
Happy 80th , John Lennon
My favorite interview. The man made a lot of sense & was a visionary!
3:55 - He starts to degrade into universalist washout.
But this visual accompaniment was fantastic - artistic, well-thought out. Nicely done.
This is glorious. Lucky, lucky dude. This is so inspirational.
I think I'm going to cry, happy tears. He is truly something to look up too.
glass onion: the walrus was paul
Fuck for peace_______"we're all violent"..talk for yerself John.
/Stuart Sutcliffe/
That's genius! It's a short film, as well as a piece of important musical history.
The people of Canada thank you for considering them nothing.
Canadians spend more time on TH-cam per capita than quite a bit of the rest of the world... But I guess the comments have said so much already...
Absolutely priceless from the content to the stunningly beautiful art. Thank you for sharing!
This video was mentioned by one of the DJs on Beatles Sirius XM today
Animation here is incredible
this really shows the character of Lennon
Messages are there he says but some people get the wrong message such as Manson did about Helter Skelter art is subjected to interpretation and misinterpreted also.
this is so wrong. the walrus was Paul.
subtitles would be great!
Who else got the wings joke
Well said. A message worth listening carefully to. A wondrous thing to have captured on tape!
awesome interview!!! The guy speaks the truth IMO it is nice to see someone use their influence for the greater good!
4:26 the flower animation is incredible
I think it's great he took the interview with one of his fans who snuck in! Plus it's a fantastic interview at that!!
So was it "piss for peace" as the animation suggests or is it "kiss for peace" as the closed captions is written
Edit: nevermind
