    I am about to buy some ducks and was looking for a way to keep the pond clean. I have to tip my hat off to you, this has so many incredible elements of waste water treatment, hydroponics and permaculture that it is better phrased as simply art. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video and the genius behind it. Thank you!

    Good job Roger, loved your video. Very calm and collected unlike some other videos on TH-cam. I swear some guys just need to get the camera off of their ugly mugs and show me the process rather than waste my time. I was wondering about your use of 3 pumps. Could you get by using one high flow pump. Pumping directly from the bottom of your pond to the conical (settling) tubs and allowing the gravity flow to do the rest of the filtration? I love your setup with the Hyacinths and duckweed. I had hyacinths for a short time in my pond until I introduced ducks into my system. Then it was the salad bar. Then this past season I had about 60+ wild mallards every day which really loaded up my pond. I don't have anything setup yet, but you gave me some good ideas on where to begin. Could you provide an update on your system? How's it holding up? I live in Central AZ. Take care.

      Actually, I’ve done exactly what you describe. I run one pump at the bottom of the pond. It is high power pump. Five minutes of every 30 minutes to conserve electricity. There are timers to do this. I don’t run the skimmer or the small pump anymore it does not seem to be necessary. I still grow hyacinths in the summer, but I’ve not found that growing any kind of food is practical. Thanks for your feedback and good luck.

    Hi Roger, I really like your system. Thanks for posting. I have a much larger pond to filter. My question regarding the vortex filters.. Is there a inlet and outlet at the top of the barrel? Are the pipes coming out of the bottom ,are they for drainage? Then how, and how often to you have to clean out the sediment?

    • @runkler007
      @runkler007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the outlet for the 55gal vortex the water outlet is towards the top of the barrel but slightly lower than the in water. You want the partials to swirl around the outside of the barrel and end up on the bottom. So in theory the cleanest water is in the middle on the top.

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Russel is correct. Water enters on top on outside edge and exits on top in center at water surface level Bottom spigot is to drain sediment

    Won't it damage the pump to leave it on without water? Would love to hear that it doesn't cause damage! We use a pump for our aquarium siphon to do water changes and I am always careful to keep it submerged. I could just be reacting to the sound though!

      None of the pumps run dry in my system. Sorry if I gave that idea. Some pumps are designed to run dry safely and some will burn out. Some have a breaker that needs to be reset if they overheat

    Do you use the sediment for fertilizer on a garden or yard plants? (I am also near Seattle but closer to Olympia/Bremerton area.)What do you do during the rainy season?

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I am industrious I fill 5 gal buckets with sediment and carry off to fertilize. More often I just drain. Hard to pipe the sediment anywhere due to clogging

      @rogerblauvelt367  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rain doesn’t matter other than it tops off the pond. I don’t have water hyacinths in the winter but otherwise the system works year round If it gets too full I drain

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the water is moving enough mosquitos will not breed so easily. Sometimes I put mosquito dunks (biologically active rings) in the tubs, but they are a bit pricey.

    so, the pump is powerful enough to move the ducks' solid droppings from the bed of the pond and up into the pipes?

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is not an issue with power. It is about the type of pump. You need to get a pump that handles solids up to a certain dimension. The sediment is not solid at all, it is more of a sludge.

    Love it. I've been considering ducks as a means of helping manage garden pests, and all I keep hearing is how messy they are, particularly with the water. I keep thinking this is a resource. If I may ask, what are you using to run your 3 inch pipes through the garbage cans for your vortex filtration system?

    What size of pumps are you using?

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For simplicity I now run it one one pump only. Have abandoned the surface skimmer, and the tiny pump. Now only have a 1.5HP solids handling pump at the deepest part of the pond that is intended to suck up as much sediment as possible. I have a timer on it so it runs 5 minutes off 25 minutes or so and are adjustable. These are cool timers you can get at amazon.

    On the water hyacinth in the filter grow beds. Because of its hi growth rate,water-hyacinth is a great to grow as a fodder but the other end is that it is invasive and not legal to sell or even possess in Many states without a special permit. The growth rate of water-hyacinth is among the highest of any known plant. Birds carry it to other water bodies.

      Don’t know that I am breaking the law. They are not hardy in WA. The do not last the winter. Agree they grow super rapidly when it is sunny and warm. U can buy them at local hardware stores or nurseries. I get them annually on eBay.

    • @jacobbrizammito7187
      @jacobbrizammito7187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      your harsh winter keeps them tropical invasives in check. But in Florida there is no winter and they take over and clog nutrient rich ponds and rivers fast. Used to have them in a runoff pond from a hydro farm I once worked. Would remove it manually every summer. 6 months later the whole pond would be full again. I do no think Florida nurseries are not permitted to sell or ship it. My County uses herbicides on them.

      As it turns out, I have cut down my system to one bottom pump that goes to the filtration barrels. I dont use a skimmer pump anymore and dont use a small pump. Just the one bigger pump. Simpler and for this application more is not necessary. If you do koi and want pristine water, a skimmer is likely necessary.

    Some of the foam and perhaps other items you are using in you setup are not food grade and not safe in a garden. Foam for example is not safe. Otherwise I LOVE your setup and I plan to make a similar system. With food safe material only in mine though. My ducks & Geese will love it. I will also use a solar setup with an Air Lift Pump to reduce cost. Great video.

      agree. I have actually abandoned vegetable production and use it largely for filtration and water plants for the ducks and chickens to eat.

  • @brendanwylie2180
    @brendanwylie2180 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is pretty awesome! I am looking into doing something similar. Wondering why you didn't run your skimmer pump through your filtration system? I don't particularly like the idea of a waterfall in the pond not emitting clean water as this could be a drinking water source for our chickens and ducks. Am planning on just running a skimmer pump, and higher capacity pump through the same similar tiered aquaponics system. Do your forsee any issues with that?

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  ปีที่แล้ว

      The skimmer is a separate system. You could also move that thru the filter, but the system is designed in different modules. There are no rules here!
      Chickens and ducks are quite resilient and you will never keep a duck pond sterile no matter what you do.
      The idea is just to have some mass of water running thru the filtration/sedimentation system. Just like any system it is about fractions of water moving thru systems over time.
      This is much different than a koi pond but the same principles apply, just much dirtier.

    Oh my! You are growing lettuce in waste water that haven't run through a large bed that has the organisms that convert nitrogen filled waste to nitrates, and then to nitrites and allow bacteriato be mitigated. We are told that lettuce will pull bacteria from the water into the stalk and leaves, so no fresh manurecan be used in gardens and fields. Unless the lettuce ecoli outbreaks have been just due to dirty handling and they are blaming the migrants for reasons we don't understand.

    • @rogerblauvelt367
      @rogerblauvelt367  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You of course are correct. As it turns out, growing "food" for humans really never panned out. I never produced any useful lettuce. So no worries there. I do grow water hyacinths for the ducks and they eat them as they can eat raw sewage.
      Thanks for your observations.
