I can't understand why this movie is so underrated. It has got all the ingredients to make it a masterpiece: the music, the special effects, the outfits, the girls, and.....the plot !
Only recently saw this movie, bought the DVD so I can cut to these stunning set pieces, so very special, while passing on some of the male fantasy stuff.
When life is really hard your brain tries to come to your rescue changing reality for you however if it is unchecked the new reality can become just as scary

Interesting mashup, but I vastly prefer both this scene (the best of the four vignettes IMO) and this song (from the absolutely wonderful opening) as they originally appeared in the movie.
Have to say this as a guy watching Japanese animation since 1990, Snyder was doing a great job fusioning Japanese style with the Hollywood visual effects together well. However, none of my fellows love this movie.
