Hey Mat, Mercedes-Benz specialist here - the pre-facelift (2008-2011) W204 C63's came with the torque converter, and the facelift (2012-2014) models were equipped with the wet clutch. I highly recommend just replacing the wet clutch with a new one. Technically speaking, you could make the pre-facelift transmission work with the facelift model, but it would require for you to transfer over the valve body from your old transmission over to the new one. But even then, that valve body would still have to get coded, and in the long run, you will no longer have features like Launch Control.
I can just imagine tony at home a couple of years ago with all that pent-up banter inside him doing sudoku. Now he’s an Internet sensation and one of the lads.
Personally, I think Matt the Cameraman is the secret gem. He is always positive, very quick witted and keeps Matt and Tony laughing. I also suspect he is great at asking "so what are you doing" or "what's that for" to get Matt and Tony to explain stuff to him, and therefore to us, in a very natural and funny way. Great job Matt the Cameraman. Loved it when he said "Not with that attitude you won't" - laughed out loud!
I like the fact you show the reality of taking on a project like this. Not every video ends with a shot of the car driving off into the sunset. Sometimes you go to bed without knowing what the hell to do next 😂
The reason why i love this type of videos because how enlighten and happy everyone is while fixing the gearbox. I think everyone else maybe share the same opinion as mine too. Keep doing it.
Hey Mat. Huge fan of your show and what you do. I'm a person that has been using a manual wheelchair for the last 30 years. I used to drive but the cutlass needed work I couldn't really afford at the time. The more I watch your show and your generous mind at work I know you're the right person I can share this with. I can see you changing the auto game where individuals such as myself is concerned. Have you ever thought about customizing a car to fit the specs of a swivel seat for the driver Lamborghini doors that fold away and turn in the back door into a suicidal door so that way when the driver sits in the swivel seat it's easier to break the chair down and put it in the back behind. That's the nutshell version. It's a conversation I'm open to. You're awesome man and I appreciate you and what you do. Stay bless.
I've seen an old show car with swivel chairs connected to suicide doors once on youtube. It added some failior points and was too difficult to get crash proove so the idea was abandoned. Only modern svivel chairs I know of are the passanger seats in RV's and they are pretty high of the floor. I wonder if old school seat covers with/from beads would help swivel around... I think the idea of them was some massaging but they help sliding also.
As a car enthusiast tht is absolutely daunted by the idea of fixing anything on their car, yall not only make wanna try but also make me look forward to changing the oil of my car... Yall make cars fun to work on or the idea thereof rathe... Love the channel/s

As I’m sure it’s frustrating it’s great to see laughter and fun going on with your struggles. Keep up the great work team Armstrong.
Mat please remember Freddy urgently to change the brake fluid to the green one. He filled the Royce with the wrong one. This will cause expensive damage on the seals of the breaksystem.
The issue is the facelifted C63 got the dual clutch gearbox and you’ve seen to have put in the pre facelift torque converter gearbox, which are not interchangeable unfortunately. Surprised the wheels even span!
I know it’s super late but there’s an additive called motor-craft friction modifier that works magic on Mercedes transmission I recommend using anything you’re unsure of a transmission problem
There's a Wikipedia article on the gearbox, see the 'Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic transmission' article, and particularly the AMG SpeedShift > AMG SpeedShift MCT subsection. Edit: it says 'Instead of a torque converter, it uses a compact wet startup clutch to launch the car from a stop and also supports computer-controlled double-clutching.' I believe that refers to an automated version of the old clutch technique, and not 'a double clutch' in the modern sense. Also says: 'improved with the release of the 2015 model year, by decreasing the lag time between shifts.' So maybe look into whether that is compatible if you end up having to replace the gearbox and not just the wet clutch.
Appreciate everything you guys do, although the AMG didn’t get fixed this time, you still got some more experience and moved one step closer to fixing it. Im awake at 4:30am watching this
I was thinking exactly the same when I was watching him turning off the TC then dropping a few gears, hmm empty road slightly damp yeah me defo smells a rat, LOOOOL 😂😂😂😂

Hey Matt I’m a Mercedes Mechanic and when you replace a transmission in a Mercedes you have to program it to the car and do software updates on it through a SDS
Man that's still a pretty car. The build on the Vantage was freaking awesome. I thought very hard on making an offer on it, but then I'd have to leave it in Nice. I'm only there about 2 to 3 weeks a year and that would drive me insane. All of his builds on this channel are top notch and very demanding. Glad to see him working with his dad as much as he does. Another great video Matt , your dad is so funny , was watching your old videos of when you was working form your drive Matt , How far you have come in a short time is absolutely amazing mate , cant wait to see the Rolls and the Lambo you crashed being repaired gain :)
Ihave had this exact same issue before. And like you, assumed it was the wet clutch. Replaced it and it made no differece. In the end, the fix is actually a fairly easy one that didnt require the gearbox removing. Take the gearbox sump off, take out the filter and you have the valve block there. 2 of the valves had failed in the one i repaired, which control the pressure for the wet clutch. Replaced those valves, put it back together and was spot on after that. You owe me a beer 🍺 😂
Mat I had a W211 body Merc and I had a similar issue. You wouldn't believe what it was. There is a wire that comes from the conductor plate in the transmission that actually "wicks" up tranny fluid and screwed up my electronics. (Wicking is when the insulation of an electrical wire carries fluid). The wire actually brought fluid all the way up into my engine bay. Check that out.
Torque converter always goes in three steps. The first two are usually fairly easy and the third one can take some spinning and maneuvering to get everything lined up.
I can’t lie my dream car is a C63 AMG, seeing you rebuild cars is actually inspiring me to maybe look at doing it myself further down the line. I would love to take on a challenge with this, and to do that with a dream car would be some different experience entirely
To be honest, the transmission likely needed to be replaced or run through regardless of the torque converter situation. Granted, im looking at the old trans fluid in a video, but it looked to be pretty dark. From my experience when the fluid gets to that point, a trans flush and filter will only expedite the transmission failing. Best of luck! Love the channel fellas!
Id say that the issue with the transmission is that the Friday one is not programmed to the vehicle and it's in limp mode- this allows the vehicle to move only at idle speeds until you get it programmed! The actual reason that the vehicle is stalling out when it goes on great is simple the TCC ( torque converter clutch solenoid is sticking/ bad) this allows the transmission to disengage from the torque converter and will allow the vehicle to remain in gear and not stall! It's the same reason as having a car with a manual transmission and just letting out the clutch and letting the engine to stall! Get that solenoid fixed first and replace the torque converter and you'll be ok!
Hats off to you guys for even trying that gearbox. Most would have given up and not bothered. You guys may have helped somebody who was going to try this g/box swap and they probably wouldn't have known why it wasn't working properly. 👍
Hey guys, from my experience of Merc gearboxes - Have you tried replacing the conductor plate & solenoids inside the gearbox? This is what controls the gearbox & you were halfway there when you took the sump off it (by the way, it has the fill level plastic pipe snapped in and when you drain the oil, use a screwdriver to push it sideways till it comes off so ALL the oil will come out). Removing the valve body is only a few more bolts but expect a lot more oil to pour out from above it as the conductor plate is submerged in it. There's a good chance it will fix your gearbox. Merc Gearboxes are notorious for this problem. Worth a try anyway........... 🙂
