For the story : Jon was a pretty mature and father-like character in the begginging of the comics. The goofiness and the irresponsibility was actually from a forgotten character (forgot his name, but i remember he has a brown mustach) that was jon's friend and the original owner of Odie. The version of Jon in "Garfield and friends" is appairently the goofiest because we see multiple times being just a unlucky living joke, getting crazy most of the time because of what is happening to him. Jon's work life as a cartoonist is rarely mentionned during his existence (exept for the 3D cartoon where there are episodes talking centerly about it).
