    I have an ER4 with QOS disabled on a gigabit connection and my Ookla test will reach 900+ Mbps from time to time. I believe I've tested it with QOS on and the Edgerouter was able to handle the workload.

    Thank you for the video! If I want to priortize a port, eg for my gaming whilst there are streaming video on another. Should I add another queue and lower the amount of bandwidth for the port that is deprioritized?

      This is how I would accomplish it. If I have a known bandwidth hog, I just hard limit the bandwidth for that device.

    I really like your tutorials - they are really easy to understand! 😊
    I need to get ready for a FTTH connection and I tried to prepare the router config for that. I have the ER-X. I tried enabling HW offloading and I noticed that the traffic that goes through NAT is not counted on the Dashboard (it simply shows speeds as if the NAT traffic didn't exist). I'm not gonna lie - I was sad when I noticed that I won't be able to monitor usage with HW offloading enabled 😟
    Also, in preparation for FTTH I moved the config for the current connection from eth1 to eth2 (eth1 will be fiber) and after I get the fiber I would want them to be configured in failover. I saw your video on the topic but you used the wizard to configure the failover there. I don't want to lose my current config (vlans, etc.), however I'm also afraid to use commands from the Ubiquiti's website because I'm not sure if I understand which ones are needed for me. Would you be able to make a video explaining the process of setting up failover with command line - preferably with explanation of functions of specific commands so that they can be adapted based on needs?
    And a question about configuring firewall - when moving WAN from eth1 to eth2 I just added eth2 to the interfaces list on the firewall rules that were assigned to eth1. I did not delete eth1 from the firewall rules because it will become the main WAN connection. Is that enough or should I do some additional configuration?
    To be more specific - the new ISP apparently uses pppoe with packets tagged with vlan so I also added vlan subinterface on eth1, then I added pppoe on that subinterface and I assigned all of them as interfaces on my WAN_IN and WAN_LOCAL firewall rules.

    Hello. I have a problem with packet loss, it is up to 100% if I turn on a game online and type ping in CLI. Does anyone know the cause and can help? thank you in advance for your answer. Regards :)

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have 100% packet loss then there is a very serious connection issue somewhere. Try stepping it out and pinging the router, then the router's WAN interface, then your ISP's gateway. See where the disconnect is.

    if i have a 100mb download isp connection, would it be advantageous to set port speed on the edgerouter x and my edgeswitch to 100Mb? since pretty much all traffic is going to internet, and throttling traffic at end user device is preferrable? also, my ISP provides 100Mb download but if you dont limit, i can get slightly higher, most likely sucking hard on a straw, which adds latency.

      What people usually told me you need to configure the QoS for your worst case scenario to actually make a difference. Never try it my self, but that's the standard answers I hear usually.

    Hey toasty, If you throw streaming into the mix on here, 1000/30 cable internet connection . . . Would your recommendation still be to just stick with hardware offload?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      For your connection speed, I would definitely recommend sticking with hardware offloading. The device is capable of 1Gbps (TOTAL) with hardware offloading enabled. Check out my Edgerouter speedtest video for specific information, but enabling any service such as QoS will limit the speed significantly. For streaming, you want the most bandwidth possible.

    • @cobyjackson7130
      @cobyjackson7130 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToastyAnswers The ERT-4 actual handles gigabit without hardware offload with no issue. Buffer bloat was just too bad with it enabled. This is purely based on synthetics, so I really don't know if the stream would suffer in any way. I appreciate the reply, though. I'm also using OBS teleport to stream to my laptop which then uses NVENC encoding, so I should have added that is a variable.

    The internet speeds here dropped by 50% on my download rate (300 -> 150Mb) after I enable the QOS (D set to 300Mb and U set to 150). Is something to do to improve the download speed? The upload speeds does not changed significantly (set 150Mb and received 140Mb after the QOS)...

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The upload speeds don't change very drastically with QoS. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot you can do to increase the speed while running QoS. It is more of a hardware limitation of the Edgerouter itself. You would need to upgrade to a more powerful unit to process QoS at higher speeds.
      See my Edgerouter vs USG video for more information. I speedtest various edgerouters against Unifi gateways in various configurations.

  • @nanoverse

    So for gaming no QOS even though DSL Report reports C in bufferbloat vs A+with QOS?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly. If your connection is a speed the Edgerouter can handle with QoS then it is definitely beneficial to turn it on. There are just cases where it can cause more harm than good. As long as you know how it will affect things you can run with or without QoS.

      I think a video on firmware updates has been on my list for awhile. I'm hoping to get around to it soon.
      The latest firmware for any of the Edgerouters is 2.0.9-hotfix.2 which was released almost a year ago in June 2021. Seems to be a lapse in updates recently.

    Is this product eol? Do u still recommend this for symmetrical 1gig up and down connections? Or has something else came out that’s better for gig speeds?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ER-X is not yet end of life, but I would not necessarily recommend one for a symmetrical 1Gbps connection. I go over this in my Edgerouter vs. Security Gateway video as well as my speed test videos. The ER-X is capable of 1gig in a single direction. I would look at the ER-4 for these speeds instead.

    Hi, i have edgerouter x with firmware 2.09. I use wan 1 and wan 2. Wan 2 is starlink. Normal speed in wan 2 is 200mbit of download and 20 of upload. With my ubiquiti router the speed came limited to 60/70 mbit in download, why ?
    I have enabled/disabled ipsec and hwnat but the problem is always the same.

    Bro if you are here please help. If I have a large "latency unloaded" (50) during the day, and at night it is small "latency Unloaded" (23), with this switch the latency Unloaded will decrease or the switch only affects "download Active" and bufferfloat. The answer depends on whether I will buy a switch for fiber optic where there is a high latency or whether I will switch to twisted pair where there is a small latency and therefore buy a cheaper switch without optical fiber. ty very much bro u give me chance for good gaming

    • @DarthBobo
      @DarthBobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whether it’s relevant or not, the x has a great price point of entry for the features it has. It’s not enterprise, but for a home user it’s not a bad piece of kit. I have one for a few years without any issues and it does what I need. If I ever needed improved features, I would consider something else, and I would imagine a lot of other people are in the same boat as me.

      ER4 is great for home users. I've used two for two+ years now, VRRP for VIP on two ISP connections. Works great for firewall rules for locking down VLANs, like security cams, or IOT devices. Two cost me less than $350 USD. The alternative is two pfSense boxes from Netgate... you're looking at much more money.

      I bought one 1 year ago for a 50/50 4g connection. The sqm qos is one of the main reasons for going with this model. Size (behind sofa in living room) and price was also a factor. I would still buy it today for the connection I'm using it with.
      For a high speed fiber connection I would probably consider something else.
