Their first song was " Candy Girl " released in 1983. Big rabbit hole to go down.
Ralph Tresvant is singing lead on this song. After they broke up he went solo with his song Sensitivity. Bell Biv Devoe(BBD) also went solo, along with Johnny Gill who was already solo before he replaced Bobby brown who of course went solo. This song was I’m pretty sure from the late 80's.
This from their N.E. Heartbreak album, 1988.
Great pick to start this R&B journey. They are my all time favorite group. So awesome that even broken up,they still came up with bangers. I saw them in concert with Rick James when they were just kids. Legends last.
New Edition the greatest group of all time or at least top 3 with Temptations and Jackson 5. New Edition were a mega group since they were kids releasing Candy Girl in 1983 and became teen sensations. This album was when they became young adults in 1988. One of the greatest natural entertainers of all time Bobby Brown was an original member when they were kids but wasn’t with them when this song came out. He became the biggest solo artists although Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant (who was always the main lead since they were kids) had a few solo hits as well. The other 3 created another mega group Bell Biv Devoe. All of them had hits into the 90’s. If It Isn’t Love is a great introduction, now you got to check out one of the greatest ballads of all time Can You Stand The Rain which DEFINITELY highlights the other two co leads Johnny Gill and Ricky Bell along with Ralph.
You just scratched the surface with New Edition
I'm a punk rock dude... but this is UNDENIABLY a good ass song! 💯
‘Cool it Now’ and ‘Mr Telephone Man’ were a couple of my favs. They made huge hits as New Edition and when they broke up, even bigger hits by group Bel Biv Devoe and solo Bobby Brown!!
If you want to hear them all sing...Check out New Edition, Can You Stand The Rain. They all sing in that one
New Edition is one of the foremost boy bands of the 1980s. They are all originally from Boston, MA., with an exception of Johnnie Gill (Washington, D.C.) who was originally a solo artist replaced Bobby Brown in 1988 as he also went solo. You should check out some Bobby Brown as well.
Check out some of their older performances and songs and any songs on their N.E. Heartbreak album, especially: You're Not My Kind of Girl, Can You Stand The Rain, N.E. Heartbreak, Crucial, I'm Comin' Home
Bobby, Brown, Ralph Tresvant (lead singer) and Johnnie Gill were all solo artists. Around that time, (1990) Ricky Bell, Michal Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe formed the group BBD - you should also check out their group and the others as solo artists.
Side note: They also branched off as Head of State featuring Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnnie Gill and another branch of the group was called RBRM featuring Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins and Johnnie Gill.
Even in their late 50s, they all still perform to this day and have residency in Las Vegas this summer.

Welcome to R&B. New Edition (Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Ronnie De Voe, Bobby Brown and Michael Bivins) started as young teenagers from Boston and was modeled after the Jackson 5. But they are THE template for every boy band since the 80s. They were the first boy band to mix R&B and rap (rap was still brand new and not quite a genre yet) into their songs AND they can really dance. To this day, no other group can beat their choreography (only ones to come close imo was TROOP). With an approx 40 yr career and loyal fan base, they still tour and currently have a Vegas residency. Ralph Tresvant sings lead on most songs, but Ricky, Johnny, and Bobby often sing co-lead. Bobby Brown left and had a pretty successful solo career (his debut album was phenomenal) and NE added Johnny Gill to the group for a more mature sound. You should check out 😅their videos Can You Stand The Rain, Hit Me Off, and Hot Tonight. Their teenage era hits/videos (which incl Bobby) are Candy Girl, Mr Telephone Man, Cool It Now. They have reunited with Bobby off and on over the years and he is currently performing with them.
Damn awesome synopsis! Enjoyed reading that.
Good Evening Nat. They are from Massachusetts . All of them can sing check out Can You Stand The Rain, they all have parts. Loved your introduction to New Edition. 🥰
Thanks for the info!
Ralph Tresvant his voice and he's my favorite member of New Edition
My BOYS!!..grew up down the block from O.P projects, was in Karate class with Ralph at the Rec Center and Ricky is my daughters Uncle. The man watching them is Brooke Payne (first their manager and choreographer) he got fired as the manager when they made no money off their first album (Salute Stokes)..but MCA bought him back as their choreographer 2yrs later and he's been with them since. He's like a father figure to all of them. Salute for the content💯
More 👍

NE Heartbreak
Can You Stand The Rain
Hit Me Off
Not My Kind Of Girl
...just to name a few
One of the first concerts i saw was in the 80’s. It was New Edition with the Fat Boys as the opening act. Good times.
bro I grew up on NE. My wife and I still play them all the time as we grew up together as kids. This is some good R&B pop music. Check out a song called "Still in love with you" and"Can you stand the rain" by them. They are from Boston.
R&B needed
Oh man, you're hitting nostalgia lol.
Boy bands of the 90's
I had this album lol
Also check out Boys to Men, Snap, and CC & Music Factory
That's Ralph Tresvant on vocals. This is about the time Bobby Brown went on his solo adventures. The rest of the guys Ronnie, Ricky & Mike went on to form Bel Biv Devoe(BBD). Theirs, Ralph's, Bobby's & Johnny Gil's (who replaced Bobby) had fairly good solo careers. SENSITIVITY by Ralph is my favorite song by him.
New Edition: Boys to Men is an amazing song. So is the group that adopted the song name for their group name.
RALPH TRESVANT!!! 😎💯😎💯
Check out Mr Telephone Man, Nat! It was when they were really little like when Michael Jackson was in the Jackson 5. It was popular when I was like 8 years old. Btw, Bobby Brown was in New Edition as a youth as well, and he formed the group.
🧡🔥🔥
Can You Stand the Rain and I'm Still in Love with You will let you hear the other members shine. They are from Boston.
Late 80s brother. '89 to be exact. This was kind of their "last" album before they disappeared for a while and after one of the founding members (Bobby Brown) left. DEFINITELY check out some BOBBY BROWN. start with "Don't Be Cruel" or "My Prerogative" Late 80s was a particular time for R&B. Once "Real Love" by MARY J BLIGE came out in 1991, it was a whole new ball game. R&B became "Hip Hop Soul" You're kind of looking at the end of an era.
Got to do bell biv divo poison 3 of the members of new edition
Well then this song is older than you (1988)😆. hmmmm ah feelin like ah ole Tanty😆. New Edition and New Kids on the Block had the same Manager/Producer Maurice Starr...both bands are from Boston and still going strong to date...for me it has always been Ronnie DeVoe (New Edition) and Jordan N.M. Knight (New Kids on the Block)💗💗💜
If you want an old school love ballad banger listen to High Five- I Can’t Wait Another Minute
Boston Projects boys
If you havent already, i suggest listening to some pink floyd, my personal favourite is comfortably numb but another brick in the wall pt 2, wish you were here and time are some of there most known ones
My all time fav group in my teens but Candy girl was the shit and still is.
If you like this one...then check out NEW ADDITION:can you stand the rain!!.
