This is, strictly speaking, the best song ever written.

Fun little fact: Laito Sakamaki shares the same Japanese VA as Enmu from Demon Slayer. So for any Enmu simps out there, just imagine he's singing~ you're welcome~

Ah! I love listening to this song. A long time has passed, since I was watching DL
My favourite characters are Laito and Kou. I don't know why, but I like them a lot

Why, as an asexual, do I fucking love Laito?😂

In a sense, sex is incidental to the character. To say that Laito likes sex is insufficient to explain what's going on with him. Shu likes sex; Laito *uses* sex the way a chessmaster uses his opponent's pieces to force them into a position of Zugzwang, where all they can do is step further into his trap. The fact that he can tell you exactly how he is going to corner you against the shadows of your own soul is sublime. We all have hidden parts of ourselves that imprison primordial power, like the Greek gods imprisoned the Titans - desires that are too awful to let see the light of day. But even if it terrifies us, we also ache to let those desires free and reclaim that power, even if it overtakes us. And it doesn't matter what the desire is for! As Laito ruins you bit by bit, his continual liturgy is to 'be honest,' to recognize those desires, and for all he's destroying us slowly as he dissects us to excavate them, there is an awful sort of freedom in experiencing the power of those desires unleashed at last.
I think one of the moments in the first game that shows this most is when Yui begs Laito not to take another girl in her place. Earlier in the route, she had been wondering if she could sacrifice some other girl to him in order to distract him and make her escape, but she decides against it because it's wrong. After she begs Laito to keep her rather than take another, he asks her whether it's because he wants to save the girl from the fate of him, or because she wants him that much. She lies and say that it's to save the girl. And they both know it's a lie.
Her self-destructive desire for him has been honed to such an edge that it cuts through every other part of her being.
Is that not a beautiful way to die? To feel your desire for another person so sharply that it destroys every other part of you, that everything else inside you is sacrificed to it, leaving only the purest poison to choke on, and that poison coming from your very own heart?
It's awful, painful, and shameful, yes. Ugly, as all excess is ugly. But I do think it is also beautiful. ... No sexual desire is necessary to enjoy that; though I think one could argue that it's still a sort of perversion...
Any of this sounding like what you admire about him?

@@darrengreen9374 I really like your take. I think the contradictions in how he’s portrayed are really interesting too. He kinda seems so carefree and casual while actually he knows exactly what he’s doing and what he wants to archieve. I feel like he really dislikes dishonesty because of his backstory, but uses this carefree demeanor as a fake shell to protect himself.
It’s like he loves and hates Yui because on one hand, he wants her to be free and be herself even with the sides she is ashamed of, and he’ll love her for them, yet on the other hand, he’s happy when she suffers and hates him. And it’s kinda easy to like it after a while because no matter what, it’s clear that Laito wouldn’t judge you or like be disgusted or hate you for being “ugly”.
It seemed to me as if he wants to see all the “ugly” sides so his ugly sides will be accepted too, so he’s basically self destructive too when he makes her hate him.
It could also be that he’s scared to actually love someone because loving was so painful that he started to hate it (because backstory). So he decided that “I love you” was meaningless, but even if you gaslight yourself like that you’d still want acceptance or understanding or anything from others.
So to me it was as if every time he hurt Yui, he was testing her. Making sure she’d still forgive him and love him even if he were to be a really horrible and disgusting person.
So I think you’re right that that freedom is what’s so fascinating to me because I think he really longs for that freedom he gives to others, but doesn’t allow it for himself because he’s scared of being hurt and having to hate someone that betrayed him again, so he’s trapped in that torture of hurting and distrusting a person that really, actually he wants to love purely.

@@jimpickens5936 I think you're quite right! ... He's also grooming and psychologically abusing Yui very methodically in the first game, but after that, I think it's mostly the testing you're talking about. ... One scene that stuck out to me in a later game where their relationship had developed was where Yui said to him, "You seem more serious than usual," and he replies, "Do I not normally seem like a serious person?" and he's smiling as he says it, but I think it's a meaningful moment where his mask is slipping, where he's allowing her to see his depressive side. It's a lot safer to just actually hurt her because he can distract her from what he's got going on, and that prevents her from hurting him too intimately.
