    I totally agree with you on "Uncle Ghost". When it was released none of the "collectors" on the web had it, except a guy named "Amazing Maples", who took some pics of his tree to show me. Fell in love immediately. As the years progressed, this maple gets better and better....it's my all time favorite Acer Palmatum. I think the problem was the overuse of the name "Ghost" ...seemed people were tired of it, which can reflect on Talon's choice to retire it for a while. Thanks for another great video !

      You should be OK. I think you have enough cool weather for maple dormancy. A good friend of mine lives south of you, in El Cajon. He has a nice older species Acer palmatum in his backyard. It does well. GGW is a good, heat tolerant cultivar.

    Great vedio. Thank you! Look forward to seeing you compare red Japanese maples like Bloodgood, fireglow, moonfire etc - I am wondering which one has bright red colour and (relatively) not turning dark in summer. Cheers.

    • @maplecollector4398

      I may eventually do that but the fact is, there is very little difference between those cultivars, in the summer. If they are exposed to enough heat, they lose color. That being said, when in full sun, Emperor I seems to be best.

    I wish I could get some of the ghost series cultivars in the UK, they're impossible to find! I've had an Amagi Shigure which died back to one tiny weak branch, and I've got a very healthy Aka Shigitatsu Sawa, but apart from those the reticulated are hard to come by. Would love an amber ghost or nebula.

    • @maplecollector4398

      Yes. I have a large Wilson's Pink Dwarf and it's a favorite if mine. The only problem is that the color only lasts a few weeks. This is the same with Coral Pink. If you want a pink that lasts and likes a lot of sun, like Summer Gold, Geisha Gone Wild is the best.

      Thank you. I haven't grown either of those but I've heard that they are both morning sun, evening shade trees. Peaches and Cream has more of a reddish orange tint in the spring. Another thing to be aware of is that another cultivar called 'White Peaches' is often sold as 'Peaches and Cream' but is more similar to 'First Ghost'.

    • @maplecollector4398
      @maplecollector4398  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They act differently in different climates and depending on sun exposure. In most cases none will hold into late summer unless you have mild temperatures. Celebration in the morning sun and late day shade, will probably give you the best show.

    • @_Sunmaker_
      @_Sunmaker_ ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I’m in Tennessee so it’s definitely going to get hot here. Do you prefer the summer and fall colors of any of these over the others? They all have nice spring color so I guess other seasonal interest could be a tie breaker.

    I don't have any of these, but I do have 'Ariadne', which has been very colorful. Do you consider 'Ariadne' to be a pink cultivar and if so how does it compare to those featured in this video?

    • @maplecollector4398
      @maplecollector4398  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jay! Yes, I do have 'Ariadne' and I wouldn't really put it in the same group with these aside from it being a reticulated Japanese maple. It tends to be more toward a peach color or even reddish with more sun. I guess you could consider it pink but definitely a different hue than the cultivars that I covered here.

      6+ hours, starting in the morning or 6+ hours of afternoon sun? I doubt any of them would do well with 6+ hours of afternoon sun, but 'Shirazz'/'Geisha Gone Wild' is probably your best candidate. If it's 6+ hours of sun starting in the morning, 'Uncle Ghost' might also work.
