    Hua Chenyu said:
The song “Illusion and Reality” is actually a summary of my album, and it is also my first attempt to use operatic techniques to compose.
The content of this song is relatively complicated, so I started to sort out the long Weibo post a month ago, writing and deleting it in the middle, until I published this song today. It’s a bit long, and interested friends can take a look.
The whole song is switching back and forth between “illusion” and “reality”, and the verses are mainly divided into three parts:
The first part’s lyrics start from the very beginning till “that tenderness is not pretended”. This is written from the first-person perspective, and it talks about the self-contradictory state of understanding and not understanding the world through indoctrination during the growing-up process. Because when people are confused, they don’t know how to talk about their own life, or what appearance, expression, and language to use when facing different types of people, so it’s easy to start thinking about how to solve the conflicted feelings when they are alone.
In terms of music, from the beginning of the first section, the bass and the harmonies appear and stop at the same time, and then the dry voice of a person stands out alone, just to highlight the effects of repeatedly switching between “illusion” and “reality”. When the person sings, the harmonies come in suddenly. It’s like when you are thinking about yourself, sometimes a lot of voices suddenly appear in your head to comfort you, but then they suddenly disappear.
The second part is the rock chorus section in the middle. This section is more complicated. I may talk about its content while combining it with music. First of all, it’s narrated from the second-person perspective, that is, the perspective of others, the feeling that a bunch of people talking to you. From the word “pretended” at the end of the previous paragraph, the word “pretended” gradually changed from a normal human voice to a distorted human voice, and then to the appearance of an alarm-like sound that tells you that the “reality” is coming. But the distorted human voice is virtual, so it also highlights the question of whether is it reality or illusion. The whole paragraph roughly means that many people are using their moral standards to examine you and demand you, but in fact, they may not be able to meet these standards themselves. So the way the drums are played in the music part of this section has the feeling of a marching army. The chorus represents a group of people coming to tell you that the world is actually like this, it should be like this, and it must be like this. In fact, I struggled with how to record this chorus for a long time, because I wanted a feeling similar to marching. At first, I wanted to find a choir to record with bel canto, but then I felt that many old battle songs were not taught. People sing such songs to boost morale, so they don’t sing battle songs with the standard vocal method, instead, they will sing them while mimicking the feeling of bel canto. So it sounds free and the momentum will feel stronger. It’s hard to control this kind of semi-bel canto-like singing style. After repeated discussions with my producer, I came to the conclusion that only I can record this chorus by myself because only I know which kind of voice is the best. I probably altered my vocals and recorded nearly a hundred tracks to sing out this kind of chorus-like momentum, so it could sound like justice is about to come.
The third part returns to a quiet part at the end, and this part has changed back to the first-person perspective, which roughly means that in the face of all this, I start to absorb what’s going on with myself, start to try slowly to resolve conflicts and accept all the good and the bad, and then keep moving forward, even if I may still encounter occasional setbacks in the middle and start to get confused and want to be saved. But life is such a process of constant repetition. As long as you are willing to accept it positively in your heart, you can live well.
So many times what you think is real, the reality will tell you it is illusory, and what you think is illusory, the reality will be disguised so well that people still can’t find the answer. I am the same, I still do not know what the answer to life is, and I will struggle repeatedly, which may become my normal state in the future, but I still have to work hard to learn to accept the good and the bad.
Many people like to use morality to restrain others, to teach you to do things from the highest ground of morality, and if they find out that you are wrong, they will rush to attack you and slander you as if they’ve grasped your lifeline. Can they represent justice? But those who attack you under the guise of justice may have made a mess in their own lives. So, sometimes you will fall into confusion, start to question life, and start to shrink back and escape. If everyone can truly lead a life by example while asking others, then this society may become more virtuous.
We have learned to undo ignorance through higher education, but kindness can take a lifetime of life experience to gain. May each of us continue to learn to treat others with self-examination and kindness in our lives.

Actually it is all his voice in the choir part. 😉 He recorded the choir part for the studio version. It is made out of over 100 vocal tracks he recorded and sung each of it in different piches and ways. I can hear clearly which is the backing track and which is his live voice here.
About the in-ear monitors. He needs them to hear himself and the band clearly. That is all. I was at his Mars concerts last year. He is amazing live. Best sound, best lighting, best musicians (live band), best stage, best atmosphere ever. Better than any other concerts I have been to in my life and I have been at many.
    😊

Whenever Queen perform live on stage, all band members will disappear while singing the part (3:05-4:07) because it is a multi-voice choir which need 180 separate overdubs in studio which cannot be performed live. Search, e.g.
In the same way, Hua Chenyu recorded 100 vocal tracks when singing the multi-vocal part in studio. Whenever he sang this song live, he sang the main vocal on stage and playback the chorus from tape (or whatever recording media).

I believe the whole "not moving so much" was a conscious decision for the performance. Hua is not a dancer like the k-pop idols but he certainly is a great performer. You can check out his live performance of "Bullfights", "Nunchak (from Singer 2018)", "Madhouse", "7 Personalities" or "Light the Bonfire at the End of the Galaxy" which you can see plenty body movements. You can also check out his "Fake Monk" performance also from the Singer 2018 which is an amazing theatric feast for just one man with a keyboard.

About this song, the backup tracks are pre-recorded by him too. About the singer, if you want to listen simple, he has many unplugged performances. And he has so many different styles. look for you react more about him.

I am just a common person who has no knowledge about music & I treat music as another language by how it sounds, and Hua Chen Yu so far is the only artist who fails to make me boring with his songs & performances. First of all I found through his songs he is a philosopher who is best by music to express the most difficult subject! You feel boring with repeated sounds of the same word but if you think it is what's the reality - boring - then that's the meaning, the reality, the catching sounds are illusion?! For this song I actually needed to listen to it several times before I became so attracted to it; the reason is there is a part sounds to me just like those propaganda music that I had heard during my young age & then I realized that's what it's about!, just like his song "Cancer".
One of the reactor stated: " behind Hua Chen Yu music is the brain"!

I think you are coming to Hua Chenyu from a rather strange angle, especially if you are unfamiliar with Chinese music,. You may be better looking at some of his performances from his appearances on "singer 2014 or Singer 2020 such as "I Don't Care" "Qi Tian" "Bull Fighting" or "New World" to get an idea about what he can do, As much as I love this performance it's an isolated song from a very active and varied concert of almost 3 hours, some of the pieces are more static than others, his stage is absolutely massive compared to most concert stages, he wears the ear monitors habitually now rather than having on-stage monitors, the modern ones allow the sound engineer to direct the feed of only the voice and whatever selected instruments to the singer so they can focus on the melody without the distraction of the crowd or other parts of the band. It is a performing choice to use none, one or both monitors if you are used to singing with them, even in rehearsals then they allow you to focus on the music without distraction.

By all means, check out the pitch correcting stuff and share your findings. It would be interesting. The thing with Hua Chenyu is … that as a composer he views the vocals as just another instrument. He always tries to adjust the sound to reflect and convey the meaning/the emotion of what he wants to say. If he looks for a flat and roboted sound thats how he will do it. That is also why he use his own prerecorded voice as backup choir. The 2 songs that maybe showcases this the most is Bullfighting and 7 Personalities. Im aware that you are doing a YT video and have to talk in big words and create drama or whatever you do to bring the attention to your videos.. but you seem to be prone to drawing a lot of conclusions based on very little real background info. Im not saying you need the background knowledge to enjoy whatever you listen to,…. But….you DO need it to make
conclusions or judging holding up to scrutiny ….if you get my drift. Otherwise it just comes off as rather shallow opinions based on air. If he were to sing in English.. ? ( his english is not good at all) HCY has never showed any inclination to take his music abroad, never talked about “world fame” He is happy with the fans he’s got where he is.. and there are already millions of them. He’s more interested in the agenda of changing up Chinese music.. Im not american, im european… english is not even my first language …… so fortunately i dont have to deal with that woke snowflake accusation crap. Funny though how some Americans always cry out Snowflake! when critisized. Where im from.. theres no “wokeness” blaming bs whenever you are met by opposing views. Being silly, childish or a prankster is just fine. (My own humor is pretty morbid. )Resorting to stereotypical slur jokes are not. It has never been funny. Ofcourse you dont have to care about what anybody thinks .. yours and mine prerogative, it still doesnt come off good. One of my prerogatives is to be suspicious of people behaving rude and disrespectful and hiding behind … “its just a joke, people. Lighten up! “ Reminds me too much of school bullies.

Hua Chenyu is known for having perfect pitch. Go to the Hua Chenyu English Subs channel and view the compilation video that's titled as him "humming" but is actually him singing a Cappella. th-cam.com/video/Fw9sc5Vtv9A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=89h5f2xGIvzyFxZg
Regarding this song - every voice you hear is his. For the studio version, he recorded over 100 tracks of himself. To be able to then translate it to a stage performance and have it be so impressive is quite a feat. He deserves a lot of credit for that alone.
You guys should watch more of his concert performances and Singer tv performances for sure, because most of your critiques are way off, based on a single performance.

@@joymcvey8331 I'm a fan of Hua and he's not pitch perfect but I still like his work. Someone else might be better than him in pitch, yet I prefer Hua's songs and performance. What you know or what is known is not a fact. What I said i.e. "No one is pitch perfect" is a fact and not my opinion. You're entitled to your opinion and have the right to voice them which also gave others the right to refute. Which has nothing to do with whether the issue concerns me or other strangers on the internet. You are overselling someone's skills based on your mere opinion.

@@nocturnalowl5867 "Noone is pitch perfect" is the debatable statement, as there is evidence otherwise, but it's not a debate I'm interested in pursuing with a stranger on the internet. Regardless, the point I was making is that, based on instances where he sings outside of concerts and recorded shows, we know he doesn't need enhanced pitch correction. Sure, I've heard him hit sour notes, but it's rare, and I obviously can't prove his performances are never enhanced, but I stand by my claim. His ability to consistently sing on pitch is one of the best I've ever heard.

    • @nocturnalowl5867
      @nocturnalowl5867 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@joymcvey8331 It is only a debatable statement if the debaters have different standards of measure. Most of his performances we see on Hunan, Zhejiang etc, the pre-recorded shows went through post production tweaks. We can hear his true performance at the finale of Singer 2018 and 2020, plus the New Year's Eve concerts when we watch them as they were aired live. And of course at his concerts. Some of the videos from his concerts uploaded to his TH-cam channel also went through some edits, can't be help for that's the industry standard nowadays. So, such videos can't be considered live although he definitely sang live. I've no argument with you on your last statement for there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between "one of the best" and "known for having perfect pitch".

Hua Chenyu always treats a song as a whole piece of work. He said before that the vocal in a song is just a component the same as any other instrument. He puts more effort to showcase the whole song rather than his vocal ability only. If you would like to emphasize more on his vocals, I will recommend a song in Singer 2018, I am what I am. In this performance the only instrument used is a piano. I really want to send you a link but for some reason it doesn't work.

  • @nocturnalowl5867

It wasn’t pitch corrected as he was singing. They might’ve done some post production tuning on this recorded video though. As for his mannerism on stage, his most expressive move is his left arm and hand 😂 You might be bored but I like it a lot. That bass was great. Thanks for sharing.

You think he is not so "real" with vocal, adding robotic soulless vocals because you don't know the concept of the song. The Rock part was him acting all the soulless critics online, they don't have their own judgement just following the media bias and attact othera on internet. Hua said he pre-recorded 100 tracks make them sounds like what soldiers used to sing together during the war, they gang up and attack in the name of justice, and when they're doing this, they think they're on the right side. So it's about haters gang up together, it supposed to be soulless since haters don't really have a brain of their own.
Anyways, maybe listen to 7 personalities, at least the vocal in this song would sound more "real" to you, and the arrangement is more dramatic. th-cam.com/video/00D36MFsmQo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=T9QrXroV6TX3owHW

It is common sense that if the stage is too loud, the sound will be delayed.
In ancient times, people would not sing to tens of thousands of people
